eBay ending support via Facebook & X on March 11, 2026
It was suggested this should be a new thread to avoid confusion with a previous thread that only applied to the UK (thanks @gurlcat ) so just as an FYI - US sellers will now also no longer be able to message support through eBay's Facebook or X accounts, effective March 11.
Official confirmation from @elizabeth@ebay in the other thread:

·4 months agoI'm deaf and Twitter (X) was my only reliable way of getting any help from them since 99% of the time that I use their automated bot it only gives me the option to receive a call back 😞 isn't this against some sort of ADA act?

OP5 months ago@ltldpr I don't believe the blues have been replaced with bots.
But it's very common for corporate communications departments to develop internal resources like style guides, knowledge bases etc and/or talking points for external comms and to distribute those resources to any employees who are in public facing roles.
eBay would have very likely expected this decision was not going to be popular and drafted canned responses with corporate-approved language for both their automated bots on the now closed social pages and non-automated responses from public facing staff to use when informing users where to get support now.

Just and FYI...I tested out using Instagram messaging for support this morning.
I was looking for a process explanation for 3 orders from the same buyer, all of which happened in about 30 minutes. 2 of the orders obviously qualified for my free shipping promotion. The third order did not appear to qualify for the free shipping promotion based on what I see on my orders page, but it did not have a shipping charge.
Response time was excellent (IMO), just a few minutes. The rep who responded was very professional and patient as I uploaded screenshots and requested clarification on what actually happened on the buyer's side of things during these transactions. When the session was over, I felt satisfied with the explanation.
Normally, I would not have bothered contacting support regarding this. In fact, at first, I thought it was maybe a glitch and posted on the tech board. In the big picture, it did not really matter because I combined the orders and only paid for one shipping label. I just thought this scenario might be good to use as a test.
ETA @valueaddedresource since this is your thread 😉

@lakefor94 I've never had an Instagram account and don't want one, but I guess I'd sign up if I get a nasty situation on my hands. Like not a mere feedback removal or anything that liveable, but maybe something where I'd lose a big chunk of money or have my account status wrongfully demoted.

valueaddedresource
OP5 months ago@gurlcat just FYI, since both FB and IG are owned by Meta, you can use your FB account to create and/or login to your IG account.
https://www.facebook.com/help/155940534568753
That does create a new IG account, with all of the terms and conditions and everything that comes along with it, so I understand why some may not want to do it - but if you do need to, that might at least make it a little easier/be one less password to have to remember. 😂

stainlessenginecovers
·5 months ago@firetigeress you found a fake that @valueaddedresource was concerned about as ebay has NEVER had reps on IG. Only Twitter (X) and FB.
valueaddedresource
OP5 months ago@stainlessenginecovers this is not correct.
eBay has had an official presence on IG for some time now.
These are both real, official eBay Instagram accounts:

gurlcat
·5 months ago@valueaddedresource But do you know if they are still offering the 1-on-1 seller support like before?
valueaddedresource
OP5 months ago@gurlcat the Instagram accounts still allow direct messages like they did before, so yes you can get 1-1 support.
Whether the qualify of service is the same or not I can't say because I haven't personally used it since the change, but I've heard from others that they have still been successful in getting help that way.
gurlcat
·5 months ago@valueaddedresource So weird. Can you think of any reason, even spitball, why they ended it on the other 2 sites but not that one??
valueaddedresource
OP5 months ago@gurlcat I think it's probably a combination of things, but it's important to remember these social pages aren't exclusively about providing customer service. They're part of eBay's larger social presence/strategy, support is only one part of that, and honestly probably the least important part (to eBay).
With layoffs and reassignments to pivot to their latest focus on Live and C2C, the social team has gotten smaller and so eBay is trying to consolidate them into once place instead of having them spread out.
As previously discussed here and in some other threads, X is eBay's least preferred platform for several reasons, not the least of which is the public nature of things and visibility/amplification effects that can happen there, so that was probably a very easy decision to pull the plug on.
Facebook and Instagram are both owned by Meta and are similar as far as how people interact with those pages - either commenting on posts on the page or just sending a direct message.
As to why they would prefer IG over FB - go back to that new focus on Live and C2C, particularly fashion. IG is already a better fit for that kind of "content", especially when it comes to creator/influencer partnerships and even more especially in the Gen Z demographic.
So from eBay's perspective, if they're only going to really actively engage on one platform, IG fits their broader strategy goals but also still allows them to at least keep up the pretense of offering some form of social support.
Now that doesn't mean I think they'll actually be successful in bringing in more Gen Z users this way, just spitballing what I think eBay might be thinking. 😂

albany_sellers
·5 months agoIt figures. Anything to not help us when we need it. The call me function on eBay never works for me, I can't contact them on FB or X, all i can get are dumb chat bots on eBay. Now the only help you get is when you escalate a case, and eBay automatically gives your item away for free when you are being scammed.
Way to go, eBay! This is one of a long list of reasons I am doing everything I can to abandon eBay.

If you have ANY sort of call block or screening on your phone eBay cs calls can and will be blocked. That has been my luck too. IF they do display/get through on your phone it would be either a 1-800 or 1-888 from past experiences. AZ junk calls on my landline show up as a local with no name attached. Blocking those has become next to impossible.

I've been reading all the comments to this thread and one thing is clear... we've all been unwillingly pushed through the door. The very fact that all these changes are taking place without any announcements, alerts, or seller input, tells me that sellers are expendable, and not "worth" the effort to protect. This puts ALL sellers at great financial risk.
Remember, these are all corporate decisions from the top down. These decisions are most likely the result of pressure to conform to the wishes of their most powerful shareholders, as well as a reflection of generational moral decay. The complete disregard for "human" consequences exposes the character of eBay leadership. How sad.
valueaddedresource
OP5 months agoAnd just like that the remaining pages are updated to remove the reference...which of course is the least of the problems that need to be addressed here. 🤦
Seriously, even if the @askeBay handle does not get taken over, the flood of fake accounts that will come in to fill the void can and likely will do untold levels of damage to eBay's customers - and in case that needs to be spelled out explicitly, just imagine the havoc if many thousands of buyers and sellers are tricked into compromising their log in credentials or other personal information in their frustrated search to get help through one of the sites eBay has officially told them to use for years.
This is a massive security issue waiting to happen and if eBay doesn't care enough about their customers to do something about it....well all I can say is they will deserve to get whatever bad press, lawsuits, and regulatory probes will likely follow.
I never thought I'd say it but, bring back the public auto-response bots providing links to the help pages we saw yesterday - at least then the official page would still be active and users would be directed to safe/official help options, even if they ultimately still don't provide a satisfactory customer experience.
gurlcat
·5 months ago@valueaddedresource FWIW, the 'Message' feature that was there on the Facebook page yesterday ... is gone today.

valueaddedresource
OP5 months agoThanks @gurlcat. I expected that and honestly I expected on X they would just turn off the DM option and leave the auto-response bots running like we saw yesterday - certainly not ideal but at least something.
Even I didn't think they would just completely nuke the account and leave potentially millions of customers on X to the wolves...but here we are.
Especially since there was no public announcement or anything so....how many people who have been using X to get eBay support for years will have no clue about the change and maybe not even notice if the account responding to them has a dash or a 2 or whatever in the handle, let alone like I said if the actual handle does eventually get taken over.
I'm actually shocked - the absolute utter, reckless disregard for the safety and security of their customers is blowing my mind right now, and you know that's saying a whole lot.

·5 months ago@valueaddedresource Fortunately, I've never had to contact ebay for support very often. The lifetime concierge service I received was great, until, apparently, ebay decided I had died and therefore ended it. I never had to contact them more than a few times, but the result was always helpful.
But as you note, the real issue here is the complete lack of meaningful advance notice that these avenues have ended, and the fact that ebay seems to be paving the way for fraudsters to jump in with fake support sites.
ebay seems to have decided that actual planning and foresight are no longer business requirements.
And unfortunately, this seems to be a common issue with many, many companies these days. Cory Doctorow should be required reading in our schools, so students can learn how NOT to run businesses LOL
broto_64
·5 months agoThey never have been, that much is old news. It is mind boggling to me how corporations survive at all, based on the decisions they make, if I ran a small business like a corporation I would go out of business.
It is also incredibly wasteful, having to spend millions on advertising just to keep generating consumer interest... Word of mouth would never carry a corporation long, all you have to do is get treated to the "experience" and you'll see why.
It's not just ebay.
I do agree completely nuking the accounts was a bad, bad idea.
Not that I was a fan of them disabling live support completely, there were few instances where I needed actual help, very few... I'm not one of those sellers who needs support because OH you mean I have to BE on ebay.com? Oh ok thanks!
From that perspective I can see why customer support was such a money pit for corporations in general.
But that was not me, I rarely contacted support, once a year maybe since usually it's for the kind of situations we don't see here either.
Rare stuff, like the kind of thing that happens once in a decade or so.
We're left in the wild west of the open nothing now.
iamalwaysright
·5 months agoWhile I agree that ebay doing this is a slap in the face to it's users, I don't see the aftermath being any worse than how it is for Etsy's CS now. Although I'm not really in the loop as much for Etsy so I don't really know about the member response to lack of CS. They don't allow any contact thru social media DMs. They don't even allow DMs thru their own site for that matter. Either that or they do and take forever to (or don't) respond. I've always understood that I'm on my own with using that platform to sell.
At least ebay still has some ability to contact them thru their own site. I'll have to rely on my concierge more now. I'll have to remember to ask them about this Facebook/X abandonment next time I have them on the phone to see what their take is on this whole thing.
Glass half full 😅
valueaddedresource
OP5 months ago@iamalwaysright the aftermath I'm speaking of is not about whether or not customers can get support - it's about the vacuum that is left by deactivating the official support account on X.
As they say, nature abhors a vacuum, and in this case that space will be filled by bad actors looking to do bad things.
Put yourself in the frame of mind of the average eBay buyer or seller who is active on X but has never visited these forums, doesn't read websites or watch YouTube videos that may have covered this etc. and has seen absolutely nothing informing them of this change.
For years, if you've needed assistance with something, you've known that you can make a post on X/Twitter tagging @askeBay and you'll get a response from an actual eBay employee either providing information if it's something general or providing a link/requesting for you to send a DM if it's something more specific.
Now, overnight and with no announcement, if that same user does what they have always done, tagging @askeBay, they may not even know the page has been deactivated (you don't have to go to their page to start this process, you just start a post of your own and type the tag in it) and they may get a response from an account that has the eBay logo for a profile picture, a name that says Ask eBay or eBay support or something similar and other information to look "legit" and not realize the response is coming from the handle (for example) @askeBay2 instead of @askeBay.
So you think you're talking to eBay but you're actually talking to a fraudster and once you DM you'll probably get a fake link to log in that will compromise your eBay credentials, then they'll have access to your personal information stored in your account, can take over the account to use for fraud and all manner of other really bad things.
While it's true there was already some risk of this happening previously, that risk was substantially mitigated in multiple ways by the existence of the real, active account. Without that, the risk that people will fall victim to scams and fraud goes up significantly.
If you aren't a regular X user this might not make sense to you but I am very active there (and also have some relevant experience/ inside information) so I can confidently say there are some very important nuances about how that platform works that make eBay's decision to deactivate the account a potentially very serious fraud vector/security issue.
valueaddedresource
OP5 months agoWow, eBay has now completely deactivated the @askeBay X account, though their still active official pages still direct users to a now non-existent profile.
That means every public answer/information ever provided on that page is now lost, which is terrible for transparency, but more than that it could pose a significant risk for users in the near future due to how X handles dormant accounts.
If it remains inactive with no log in for 30 days, the handle may be freed up for someone else to take, meaning bad actors could hijack it, pretend to be eBay, and use that to collect personal information from the guaranteed flood of people trying to find support going forward. 😲
Fake accounts are already coming in and responding to users who can no longer get real support, but this will become exponentially worse if bad actors are able to actually takeover the askeBay handle.
@devon@ebay @elizabeth@ebay @kyle@ebay please pass this on to whoever might still be left of the social team....this is a terrible idea for many reasons.

My last 3 interactions between eBay CS and Facebook ended with, yes we can see the problem you have diagnosed and we are escalating. When I attempted to follow up, there was mysteriously no record of the tickets. For 1, where I and others were repeatedly being overcharged for eBay generated postage labels, we were promised refunds in a few days. That NEVER happened. So I followed up. They suggested I speak to Canadapost. Problem being the glitch is eBay's software as acknowledged/confirmed by their FB helpline. Not CP's. So, that one went nowhere.
Those sorts of examples of CS runarounds have been happening for years on eBay. Every day of the week on eBay. I can't see using the current customer service tool plus having Instagram being lone de facto backup plan make getting qualified real help when it is needed any easier. (Yes, some problems are easy to solve and get/were handled appropriately in the past, but in other situations you don't need any kind of runaround.)
If Chatbots are the dark road/new normal we are heading towards, things are looking extremely bleak going forward!!!!
Disclaimer: In past I only used FB for playing cards to escape any eBay insanity I was dealing with at the time. Later on it was to get a hold of someone from eBay to "hopefully" resolve that afore mentioned insanity. Rinse, wash, repeat.
For added fodder to all this:
Most Instagram users are under 34 years old; 70% fall into this age group. Specifically, 7% are aged 13-17, 30% are 18-24, 33% are 25-34, 16% are 35-44, 8% are 45-54, 4% are 55-64, and 2% are 65 and older.

Living where my city could be renamed 'AI City' since a lot of the office buildings in my city are and will be eventually be occupied by these services for companies that use artificial intelligence...to be so close and yet so far for any human help whatsoever.
I only have to look out the window and every 5 minutes a driverless cab rides down my street...I am on one of the main roads which these driverless cabs use...sometimes I see 3 or 4 in a group like they are racing.
To see a driver in a car honk at a driverless cab can be funny in my city.
And I ponder when it rains...does a driverless cab use their windshield wipers?
If I don't have my iPhone in my hand when I am walking down the street or at the gym I kinda feel like an outcast.

·5 months ago@12345jamesstamps Interesting question. I'mma guess YES, because there should be a camera mounted inside to record how things look from a would-be driver's point of view, that way if there's an accident they can evaluate whether a human driver would have reacted better. These things are still in 'beta' mode even though they are actually working cabs now.
Also I think passengers would find it very unsettling to be in a moving vehicle with the windshield totally obscured by rain.

The appeal system is 50/50 in my experience, some of the people checking the appeals just seem to deny everything. The live chat reps just want to tell you you're in the wrong as a default, so when dealing with them I am forced to argue my point for hours and go through multiple reps before I find one who will help and resubmit my items for appeal. Once I found out about DMing them on Facebook I have been able to get all my issues resolved by sending a quick message. Now I'm going to have to go back to the live chat hell it seems.

OP5 months ago@chapeau-noir regardless of what one might think of the respective platforms, the bigger point is that those channels were often where sellers found a better/higher level of support compared to the phone, onsite chat, or increasingly AI-powered self-service options.
As you suggest, that "better support" isn't going in house - some of it went out the door in the recent round of layoffs and others will be reassigned.
In the past the social support team often overlapped with the growth advisor team (one of the reasons I suspect they were able to be more helpful) so I wouldn't be surprised if the ones who are left will be mainly focused there and/or on recruiting and getting "select" sellers up and running on eBay Live.
That's a real loss for sellers no matter how you slice it, imo.
