Ebay charges fees on... taxes?
I'm really curious how long this can actually last, because there's no way in the universe a company can legally get away with charging you percentage sales fees based on taxes and import duties. Literally the total fees we charged on for a transaction INCLUDE the sales tax, and it's waaaaaay worse on foreign transactions. Any sellers on here notice that when you see all the fees/import fees/taxes a buyer pays that you never see in your pocket for a transaction that they're literally charging you fees based on all of that too? So you sell something for $40, guy from France buys it, pays $26 shipping for a total of $66 that you would be receiving on your end. Except often with overseas buyers this might after all the import fee/misc taxes they have to pay come out to more like a $110 transaction. So instead of you getting charged ebays fees/promoted listings fees/you know it based on $66, it's instead coming off of $110.
So lets say 13%, that's $13.00
Lets say you promote at 15%. That's $16.50.
I'm pretty sure they have some kind of fixed foreign transaction fee too that I'm unsure of the amount of.
So like $30-$35 in this scenario back to them because of how they handle their fee structure now including (milking let's call it) taxes and import fees as the representative total. But remember - you aren't collecting $110. You collected $66 because that's what your actual real transaction was, for you.
So now, $66 original
subtract $35 for the crazy fees
...congratulations, you're left over with $31, which is questionably enough money to ship this item to it's location in France. You sold a $40 item, a decent sale, and pretty much ebay just took the entire thing from you. Hope you didn't pay too much for it.

·3 years agoEbay NO suppose to get fees on taxes. they suppose to get final value fee before taxes. They are getting extra money that is not right. Taxes are only for IRS, NO to get commission and If a buyer is register international ebay charge fees even if the goods are shipped in USA. Even worst they charge you international fees including taxes DOUBLE DIPING. NOW they do not know how to get more money from you. Ebay should be report to govertment getting commissions on taxes.

·3 years agoYou do know that eBay's final value fee is calculated on the total amount the buyer pays the seller which will be the item price, the shipping cost and the STATE sales tax, if any, right?
There is no involvement of the IRS in this. This involves the state sales tax which will be based on the buyer's delivery location.
Due to a fairly recent Supreme Court ruling, state sales tax can be charged on online purchases. About 46 states have so far opted into this.
It costs eBay some money to collect the state sales tax on each affected purchase, and remit it to the proper legal entity, usually the state treasury, so the FVF includes a percentage of that money.
And do you really think that eBay doesn't have a few (hundred) attorneys who have assured eBay that this is indeed legal?
