ebay and Silicon Valley Bank Failure
I have found no indication that ebay has been negatively impacted by the SVB failure. However, ebay being ebay, there has been at least some impact : sellers are already flogging swag from SVB on ebay LOL
However, I'm pretty sure not everything actually came from the bank, particularly the SVB "Risk Management Dept" shirts LOL

Who would anyone really wear clothing of this bank / financial issue and be proud to own anything related to SVB?
most listings look fake and probably just made to order if you actually get the item.

·3 years agoIt's marketed as ironic. I doubt they're "fake", just run o' the mill print on demand. Etsy is full of that stuff for every occasion. The apocalypse could come and somebody would be selling t shirts 👕 about it.

·3 years agoAbout the only adverse impact I have noticed has been the impact to their stock price which has dropped 8% in 5 days but that is happening across all of the markets which are taking a beating. This is going to be a domino effect for awhile and several other banks have suspended operations or are on the cusp of following in SVB's footsteps. This may slow the marketplace for awhile but the SVB failure will be minor in comparison to what happens if the US government defaults on the national debt.

·3 years agoI haven't seen any evidence that eBay was affected, but Etsy certainly was. I haven't been keeping tabs on it, but lots of payments did not go out to sellers.

·3 years agoI'm on etsy too and the forums there are full of angst about it. Fortunately a lot of sellers started posting that their Friday payout finally went out late Monday. There were a lot of sellers had a very worrisome weekend however. One thing we all learned though is that etsy is no different than eBay, Amazon and all of the other sites when it comes to keeping sellers informed. They were dead silent all weekend outside of a very generic "we had an issue with payments on Friday and we are working on it" message. Seems like all of these tech company employees went to the same school of non-communication or intentionally misleading/vague communication to get their degrees.

·3 years agoEbay still has a vibe and I kinda like it. One thing that keeps me here.
Plus it's legitimately useful. A guy over on one of the auto blogs who worked on cars, wanted to write an article warning of the dangers of low priced Ebay auto parts. And being a handy fellow, started buying and using those parts to get his information first person. But kept finding out that the parts were actually not bad at all, and in some cases appeared to be the same ones boxed and sold for 4x the price, over the counter. So the article's title ended up being a warning, yet the body text was more of an *endorsement* lol.
I think the fact that Ebay is just so useful, is going to be VERY important in the coming few quarters. While it is not the most exciting market online, its value seems better matched to its actual usefulness, than many other platforms.

flogging: "aggressive promotion or advertising"
What does swag mean in business terms?
Company swag simply refers to promotional materials that a company might give away for free (or in rare cases might sell) to promote its brand. Swag can be given to customers, other businesses, the general public, or as prizes.

Like people at the Oscars last night got Swag Bags full of promotional stuff from companies hoping for product placement in movies. You know, when Garth and Wayne eat a particular brand of chips from the bag or Clairol wants to provide all the hair styling products for the whole cast in turn for some kind of listing in the credits.
I seem to remember from old pirate movies from the 50s the term "swag" meaning loot, or stuff they stole.

·3 years agoThough I'm pretty sure those SVB t-shirts are print-on-demand swag/schwag and not the real thing. The poor souls working at SVB have probably already rent their garments in frustration and they're no good for resale now. I hope no one is flogging them on top of it all.

·3 years agoI don't know if I'd class this as 'ironic', but a tenuous ebay 'connection' to the SVB downfall might be that Peter Thiel (a co founder of PayPal) was the one who actually started the 'run' on the bank in the first place.

·3 years ago😖I thought the remark was a joke meant to be teasing irony, given that 'flogging' and 'swag' is pretty old slang ('flogging' merchandise has been said in Britain for decades and I remember 'swag' from when I was a kid), conflating it with a buzzword which itself has turned into a joke. It won't have been the first time I've read something wrong.
