Final straw:
Mailed a box 12x21x12 25lbs
Was charged $22.75
Ebay emailed an adjustment the dimensions were adjusted to:
Mailed box 12x24x12 25lbs
An additional $23.00 was added to the cost.
No, the dimensions were not incorrect, verified by UPS Store before they accepted it.
I can't dispute, I can't find a human to speak to.
Don't feel like typing the list of other issues since Ebay was curtained by India.
Nothing I can do about it.

·10 months agoI started getting quite a few "special handling" charges from UPS on items that I had shipped many times before with no problem. One that I kept getting was caused by using to much tape and a sensor evidently thought it was shrink wrapped. This started not long after UPS announced that they were drastically reducing their Amazon deliveries.
My theory is that either they added more automation to detect underweight/ oversize packages and or tweaked these systems for maximum revenue much like cities with red light cameras discovered that they could increase revenue ( and rear end collisions) by shortening yellow light times.
I now ship most UPS via pirateship because they can usually be appealed successfully.

If that's all it takes for you to quit ebay, it sounds like you were already looking for a reason.

·10 months agoijust had 3 seperate ups backcharges on dimensions in one week through pirateship..... theyhave a "oneclick" solution and a dedication button on each label- DISPUTE. Within 48 hours ups approved all three of them and refunded my money. Ebay shipping offers NO solution to dispute or combat carrier overcharges after the fact. That alone is reason to purchase labels elsware. If you call ebay about a ups or fedex backcharge- they will tell you they are sending it to the ebay shipping team for review- they never even send it to the carrier- they just ignore it because they said ebay is the one who determines the credibility of the dispute!

·1 year agoThat $23.00 charge has nothing to do with the dimensions. The UPS shipping charge for 25 lbs is $34.93, and that amount stays the same whether the dimensions are 21 x 12 x 12 up to 28 x 12 x 12 for a package going from California 95205 to Arkansas 72315.
Go to Pirate Ship and put in the same shipping and destination addresses with the dimensions 12 x 21 x 12 up to 12 x 28 x 12, because 3 lbs more should not even matter so what is the $23 for? It may be for a rural delivery surcharge, but $23 seems like a lot for that.

The OP did not use Pirate Ship so however PS figures their shipping charges is a moot point for this situation.
On the UPS website, for figuring an estimated shipping cost, it has what is called "simple flat rate" which DOES go by dimension and is for packages up to 50 pounds. The OP's package was 12x12x24 which is considered "extra large" and costs more to ship. OP is in CA but did not say where the package destination was; if he was shipping far away such as New York or Florida, it would cost a lot more than the center U.S.
We do not know how the UPS clerk figured the shipping cost but it appears he erred by not taking into consideration either the box size or the weight, depending on how he was figuring it. Regardless, a 25 lb. box of oversized dimensions would be expensive to ship, a lot more than the $22 he was originally charged.

eBay did not adjust your dimensions and shipping cost.
UPS adjusted adjust your dimensions and shipping cost.
eBay simply passed on the added cost that UPS added to your shipment.
No, the dimensions were not incorrect, verified by UPS Store before they accepted it.
Your issue is with UPS and the UPS store, not with eBay.
If eBay covered the cost of shipping adjustments by carriers, then thousands of unscrupulous sellers would lie and eBay would be left to foot the bill.

·1 year agoFirstly - ebay feedback ratings are meaningless & worthless to your issue. Second - dimensional drift or weight change is only 1 of two culprits: the shipper or the carrier. The selling platform is not the cause. Pricing being undercut resulting in an adjustment higher to the correct price can be platform caused.
If your item was not packed firm, thus altering the dimensions or weight in transit via environmental factors, every carrier will jump at the chance to upcharge. There is no such thing as fractional dimensions. They exist for billing in whole number units. Always round up to the next inch.
There is fractional weight. Scales are notoriously out of tune & thus can swing wildly. I round up into the next billable unit for weigh if its within 3 ounces < lb. or next whole lb. over 1 lb.
Be sure to pack firmly. Laziness in packing leads to not only dimensional shifting but also damages & returns claims.

Whoever typed in the dimensions could have done it wrong, and it was eventually caught by UPS... On most computer keyboards, the 1 and 4 keys are right next to each other vertically. Intending to type a 1 very fast, a person can accidentally hit the 4 instead. Hence, 21 may actually result in 24. I have to watch my fingers and proofread what I type, which for me is especially for numbers as well as for letters.
Just a thought, but one I have to watch out for myself as I age and think that typing fast without proofreading is somehow efficient... I nearly always have to proofread what I type and correct errors a lot.
BTW, dumping eBay for this is a totally unnecessary knee-jerk reaction. Being here for 22 years and seeing the changes over the years, you should have developed some patience by now and expected that some changes may be undesirable, but not worth throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Good luck if you do jump ship.

If this is a factual statement then you can simply go to the UPS Store and "complain".
(I ship many things through UPS Store and have never had written verification of a box size on an acceptance receipt, all I ever have is the actual, not billablem weight)

The UPS store does not verify shipping perimeters on items being dropped off with shipping labels. That's no longer a job done by humans, it's a computer responsibility that happens later on in the transaction.

..and don't shoot me for being able to do something explained in this post, my husband works for the Post Office (and you anybody might be able to do this too, not sure.

We ship daily, always have.
I just walked upstairs and grabbed this old "daily" shipping report off the top of one of the stacks. Snapped a quick photo of it.
Now, scam is pretty strong word.. However, I'll back up saiamjane8 on his assumption simply due to the fact that there just aren't any other words that I can think of that sum it up that quick.
Just a random day of UPS shipments back when we got a printed report every day.....

·10 months agoIt's a combination of not being able to read a measuring tape, not knowing how to round UP instead of DOWN, or both.
Sounds like UPS hit you with a surcharge after delivery. eBay has no control over that.

·1 year agoIt is a scam that the shipping carriers have been doing for years now.... Changing the measurements and back charging after the fact. It's completely wrong and eBay lets them get away with it. They might be in on it together. I finally switched to buying all labels through pirate ship for the last year and have never had a problem since! I got 2 adjustments in over 1800 labels and both were simple to contest and both were rev we sed within 2 days. You have no way to contest them on eBay. Pirateship just has a button to click and it's done

·1 year agoTo be fair. I would prefer to ship right on that and keep all my business in one place but over the years the frustration of dealing with these issues and having 0 protections and customer help when there is an issue just got to be too much.
Through the other site I can pay for labels with credit card and get 3% cash back. eBay does not allow this for labels anymore- you must deduct from MP funds.
Actually protections and customer service to talk to
If you make a mistake, you can cancel a label and get refunded instantly, eBay takes up to 30 days to refund... Even if you never printed the label
There insurance actually pays out to your back within 7 days! I've had 2 claims and it's very easy to submit... No hoops to jump through.
Overall better experience but again... If eBay could fix some of the issues, I would come back- I liked keeping it all on one platform. We ship around 800-1000 packages/ month over 3 accounts

Actually none of that is correct. A seller is NOT required to use 'funds' for shipping- you can choose Paypal and then assign a credit card as #1 payment. I've been getting 2% back since MP took over.

Your only partially correct..... You can only pay with PayPal for USPS labels because of a lingering contract. If you purchase FedEx or UPS labels- you must use your MP funds.

1.) you can only use MP Funds with UPS/Fedex
2.) Just another HUGE reason to NOT purchase UPS/Fedex labels on ebay (to go with all these reasons)
a.) accounts belong to Ebay so delivery issues/insurances etc. are next to impossible to deal with
b. you can't get that 2-3% Credit Card points
c.) Those 2 are FAMOUS for coming back with HUGE charge backs to sellers, apparently the calculator with price hasn't worked correctly for YEARS!
If 'size' is an issue (or price, for large items) best to purchase those labels using many other avenues besides ebay

yep- at htis point there is no advantage to using ebay labels over 3rd party except not having to go offsite (one extra step)/ actually 2 reasons- pirateship does not offer fedex..... although fedex is the worst of the carriers- sometiem sizer and weight make it the only viable option depending on buyer location.
My wife just noticed a ups label adjustment from 26 days ago ( rare with pirateship so i missed the email). It took less than one minute to dispute (dedicated button on every label purchase page) and the $9.85 was refunded within 36 hours. no fus no muss!
Techinically i could still purchase the usps labels on ebay and run it through paypal and use my credit card but I reward good policy and product with my business so i took all shipping off ebay now
Rates are exactly the same for usps and UPS is often same or less than ebay.
I ave actually talked on the phone with the head of shipping dept. at ebay (last year so it my not even be the same lady now) and she recognized the shortcomings but kinda said it is what it is.
WIth MP, ebay forces us to use our funds so they can save the credit card transaction fees and keep the processing inhouse- but their .5% profit is directly taken away from seller's 3% profit since we no longer can use our credit card rewards programs. When they started "prepaying UPS and FEDEX labels out of funds instead of waithing the 3 weeks for Carrier to deliver and bill- they said they were going to absorb and mitigate the backcharges ( unless aggregoius) --- from what i can tell- that never improved at all but they are holding millions upon millions of dollars in their accounts making the "float" interest for weeks until UPS/FEDEX bill them. Smart business move but again- its at the expess of sellers because we never got any benefits-
I believe she had mentioned that when the contract with paypal and USPS ends- then ebay will force all labels to be duducted from your MP funds but i dont recall when that will happen.

The box you sent was oversized and heavy. I don't use UPS but I took a quick look at UPS's website and they also take box dimension and weight into account. (USPS also takes both into account.) Not knowing where your package was sent from or sent to, the adjusted shipping cost to you of $45.75 sounds about right. Oversized boxes are very expensive to ship.
If you have been selling on eBay for 22 years, I'm surprised you didn't know about oversized box rates. In the case of your additional charges, you should go back and talk to the manager at the UPS store as it appears the clerk made a mistake by not charging for box size. If the clerk is new (or careless), the manager needs to know they are making mistakes.
I'm sorry you have decided to end your listings and call it quits on eBay. I think that's a mistake, for you to give up all you have worked for for 22 years. And if you decide to sell on another venue, there will be problems on those too. Good luck.

I have successfully appealed several of these from UPS purchased from pirate ship, I do not know of a way to appeal when bought through ebay.

·1 year agoNot familiar with UPS shipping rates but USPS have a dimensional shipping rate for package sizes over 1728 cu.in. in size (a 12 x12x12 box) and the shipping rate jumps up very much from the standard rates. when it happens. Plus The max weight limit is 70 lbs. for standard rates. Is it possible the UPS does something similar???.
