Has anyone experienced duplicate active listings appearing months or even years after they were originally created?
I have approximately 1,600 active listings and recently discovered a duplicate listing issue involving older inventory. Earlier this year, when I became concerned about my defect rate, I proactively exported my inventory and conducted an audit. Because I could not find an easy way to identify duplicate listings within Seller Hub, I used AI-assisted analysis to review my active listings and corrected the duplicates that were identified.
After receiving a few recent defects related to items that could not be located, I repeated the process approximately two months later and discovered additional duplicate listings that had not been identified during the earlier review. The recent defects were tied directly to duplicate listings involving older inventory.
I have now identified approximately 35 duplicate listing groups involving about 70 active listings and am in the process of cleaning them up.
My question is whether other sellers have experienced something similar and, if so, were you ever able to determine the cause? Did the duplicates originate from relisting, Sell Similar, bulk editing, inventory synchronization, or something else?
I am not looking to avoid responsibility. I have already corrected the issue and am continuing to review my inventory. I am simply trying to understand how the duplicates were created so I can prevent it from happening again.
I would also appreciate any suggestions regarding tools, reports, or processes that other high-volume sellers use to identify duplicate active listings.
Thank you in advance for any insight.
(I have had trouble finding a way to contact eBay ...)

·4 months agoWe have all had mystery duplicate listings appear. Usually Ebay prevents me from creating a duplicate listing but the other month that software check failed me. Fortunately I was able to correct my mistake before it created a problem.

OP4 months agoWhat ultimately worked for me was downloading my full Active Listings Report from Seller Hub and reviewing the data outside of eBay. I exported my inventory to a CSV file and used AI to analyze the listing titles and identify exact and near-duplicate listings. Once the potential duplicates were identified, I manually verified each one against my inventory and ended the unnecessary listings.
I then downloaded a second Active Listings Report and compared it against recent sales reports to make sure sold items were no longer active and to verify that the cleanup was successful.
For anyone managing a large inventory, especially over 1,000 listings, I highly recommend periodically exporting your active inventory and reviewing it for duplicates. It helped me identify issues that I had been unable to locate through the normal Seller Hub workflow.
Has anyone else found an efficient method for identifying duplicate listings within eBay?

Human error is the biggest reason, but this will happen from any or all of the reasons you mentioned above.

There was a better tool a couple years back that sadly is no longer available, but currently besides the steps you’ve already taken, this may/may not help?
