Does eBay Time Away + "Allow item sales" actually extend the handling time for the tracking-upload metric?
Summary: discodecadencetoys is seeking clarification on eBay's "Time Away" feature, specifically about the handling time when selecting "Allow item sales." Despite documentation indicating that estimated delivery dates would be updated, discodecadencetoys experienced late tracking uploads affecting their metrics. Several participants advised that "Time Away" does not adjust handling times, and manual changes are necessary to avoid penalties. myjulybutterfly highlighted potential documentation confusion and shared their plan to pause listings in the future. dlb9 noted a similar issue due to a possible system glitch and advised contacting eBay for resolution. The conversation outlined the importance of understanding eBay's policies to avoid negative impacts on seller metrics.
I'm trying to understand something that happened with my account during a recent move.
I had Time Away scheduled for August 13–23, 2026, and selected "Allow item sales." I specifically chose that option because I wanted buyers to still be able to purchase my items while I was away.
I had 11 items purchased during the Time Away period. Because I was moving, I didn't ship them until I returned. For example:
Item purchased/paid: August 18
USPS acceptance scan: August 25
eBay now classifies it as "Uploaded late"
All 11 transactions are being counted against my "Tracking uploaded on time and validated" metric. My current numbers are 97/108 = 89.81%, with those 11 transactions accounting for all of the late uploads.
I contacted eBay Customer Service. Two different representatives have told me that because I selected the "Allow item sales" (what one representative called "soft Time Away") option, my normal handling time continued to apply to the tracking-upload metric.
Here's where I'm confused.
eBay's own Time Away documentation says that when you select Allow item sales, you don't need to make manual changes to your handling time because the estimated delivery dates are automatically updated to ensure you don't need to ship items while you're away.
So my questions are:
1. Does Allow item sales actually extend/suspend the handling-time deadline for the "Tracking uploaded on time and validated" metric?
2. If it doesn't, what exactly is the benefit of Allow item sales from the seller's perspective?
3. Is there a distinction between the handling time shown/used for the buyer's estimated delivery date and the handling time used for the Top Rated tracking-upload metric?
4. If I want to keep my listings available during a future vacation/move without getting hit on the tracking-upload metric, is the correct procedure to increase my handling time manually before activating Time Away?
I'm not necessarily looking to have anyone tell me eBay should remove my 11 transactions. At this point I'm primarily trying to understand how this feature is actually supposed to work, because the documentation and the explanation I received from Customer Service don't seem to line up.
Thanks!

·1 week agoLearning Lesson:
Never EVER allow items to be seen/purchased while you are away.
EVEN if you 'extended the handling time' until you got home.
What if the airport had issues and you were late?
What if the car broke down and you are late?
In life- it's quite simple:
Plan for the worst and hope for the best. Not the 'other way around'.

·1 week agoI have always used Time Away, allow sales with no problems...Handling time was always automatically updated. HOWEVER...At the end of July (I think) I did time away, allow sales and the handling time did not update. I caught this before I left town and got on the phone with Ebay. There was some sort of glitch in the system. My pages showed that I was away, and shipping would be delayed, but the handling time did not update. I ended up just pausing the sales, even though they were working on it & assured me they would correct it if I got any strikes for late shipping. Possibly this is what happened to you. I'd get back on the phone with them and see if they can do anything. That's just not fair. Good luck.

·2 weeks agoIf you select to allow your items to still be sold during a Time Away setting, it can ONLY be for a maximum of 15 days. I doesn't change your handling time, but the delivery date estimates are extended to accommodate your time away that you have entered into the program. @discodecadencetoys
When scheduling your time away, keep in mind:
If you choose today's date, a message at the top of your listings letting buyers know you're on time away will display within minutes. It will take a few hours to update the estimated delivery date for your listings. If you chose Pause item sales, it will take a few hours for your listings to be hidden
If you choose a later date, your time away will begin at 12:01am on your scheduled start date and finish at 11:59pm on your scheduled end date
If you allow item sales, your time away can be up to 15 days
If you pause item sales, your time away can be up to 30 days
You should schedule your time away to start a day before your time off to accommodate any last day orders and end it a day later than your return date to process any pending orders
Whether you choose to allow sales or pause them, delivery dates won't be updated for:
Second Chance Offers
Auto-accepted offers
Pending counter-offers
Seller initiated offers accepted during Time Away
Items with local pickup or in-store pickup as the shipping option
Digital items
Athletic shoes eligible for Authenticity Guarantee
You may want to change the shipping format or the handling times on these items while on time away.
Allow item sales
When you allow item sales to continue while you're away, it's important to remember the following points:
Your listings will still be visible and buyers can still purchase your items
However, buyers will see a message at the top of your listings letting them know that you are on time away
Excluding the instances above in which delivery dates won't be updated, you don't need to make any manual changes to your handling time since the estimated delivery dates will also be automatically updated in the Shipping and Delivery section of your listings to ensure you do not need to ship items while you are away
Pause item sales
When you pause item sales, remember the following:
Fixed price listings will be hidden from search results and buyers won't be able to purchase your items
If a buyer previously added one of your items to their Watchlist or cart and tries to buy it while you're away, they won't be able to complete the purchase. They'll see a note stating that you're not processing orders until the time away end date
It can take a few hours for your fixed price listings to become hidden, so we recommend setting your time away in advance whenever possible
After time away ends it can take a couple of hours for your listings to re-appear in search results. Listings will re-appear automatically, you do not need to edit your listings
Auction listings: When you pause item sales, buyers will still be able to see and buy your auction-style listings but they'll see a message at the top of the listing informing them that you're on time away. The estimated delivery date will also be updated in the Shipping and Delivery section.

OP2 weeks ago@mam98031 I guess the bolded/underlined section below is what threw me, namely the "...you don't need to make any manual changes to your handling time since the estimated delivery dates will also be automatically updated..." section. To me that implies handling time will be updated too but maybe I'm misreading it. But will know in the future, if I use this feature at all, I'll pause all my listings. Thanks to everyone for their responses so far!

·2 weeks agoNot sure why that "threw" you, that is what they do. It is important when looking at an Ebay policy to remove your expectations from you mind and look at it with an open mind so you can absorb what the policy actually says. I get it. Often times the policy pages could be written a bit clearer and less confusing. Happens all the time.

OP2 weeks agoYep that's fair. It's something I thought about using (Time Away) a couple years ago but from everything I read from other users who used it there were so many caveats to it and confused so many people I was hesitant to use it until I read that it had been revamped in the recent past to make it simpler and easier to use. So thought I'd give it a shot. Next time, I'll do what everyone has suggested here and either use it and not allow sales or just end all my listings. Thanks for all your feedback!

·2 weeks agoIt is roughly the same program that started in late 2020. I've used it, and for me it worked just fine. My only complaint about the program is that it can only be used for up to 30 days. Then you have to let your listings go live again, then you can reset a 30 day time away.
Earlier this year I had to be away for a few months, so this function didn't work well for me at all. But Ebay has no intention, at this point, of enhancing this program.

·2 weeks agoIt does not extend handling times. It is best to either not allow sales while you are away or just end all your listings prior to your time away.
Timely shipping is very important to buyers. Buyers often don't read the whole listing or maybe don't comprehend what your time away means.

·2 weeks agoTime Away is supposed to adjust your handling time, but it doesn't always work that way.
It's better to just shut everything down when using it.

·2 weeks agoTime Away does NOT update your handling time. You have to do that manually if you want don't want to get penalty for late shipment.
