Does eBay destroy/delete my PII (drivers license) once they verify I'm legit.
Does eBay destroy/delete my PII (drivers license) information once they verify I'm legit. Or do they keep it on "secure" servers that can be hacked along with my bank account information.
It wouldn't be the first time and now they have your ID. "EBay reveals it was hacked in February 2014, personal data compromised"

OP1 year agoThanks for the link luckythewinner. So I see eBay retains our PII for 6 to 10 years. Not good at all in my opinion. It offers a great chance that hackers will eventually get in and extract the data when they have up to 10 years to work it out. IMHO, companies should store PII on offline servers, but I don't think the younger generation understands the old ways that worked of keeping information safe. Everything has to be connected online or in the cloud (someone else's computer). 🙄
For those that use the argument that your ID is everywhere it's scanned like the banks, doctor etc. It doesn't mean that we should liberally let any company, person etc have our ID so that there is a higher chance it could be compromised.
The cop comment may be correct but illogical reason to give out your ID.
Something to think about from the Experian website and the general consent when searching for what can a hacker do with you drivers license.
"A stolen driver's license number may enable a scammer to assume your identity so they can carry out identity theft and fraud such as:
- Opening a bank account
- Setting up a credit credit account
- Making unauthorized purchases
- Applying for a loan
Personally, I don't want to deal with that. While I need to sell my IT items and collectables I've horded over 40 years I just don't feel comfortable using eBay as the platform until they change their policy of storing PII or find a way to cancel the ID requirement.
Thanks for the feedback. It helped my finally make a tough decision 🙂

·1 year agoeBay has a whole page dedicated to how they handle your private information:
https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/member-behaviour-policies/user-privacy-notice-privacy-policy?id=4260
It has a section called:
7. Storage duration and erasure
Good luck deciphering it 🙂

·1 year agoAny place that has scanned your drivers license, has it on file. As I was told by a police officer once a while ago, your license is not that secret anyway same with your checking account number.

·1 year agoI would think it's safe to assume it's kept on their servers in some form, although probably not the photo of the license (simply for space reasons). Granted, it's a risk, but so is anywhere else that has your information.
