Damaged during shipping
I shipped out a graded card and the corner got cracked during shipping. I always double envelope with bubble mailers to ensure this does not happen.
This is my first time with a damages. Do I need to get my item back to file a claim with USPS or do I just refund the buyer and file a claim.
From reading other posts, I understand getting reimbursed from USPS on damages are near impossible, so I wanna do every step right.

My guess is that the USPS would deny a damage claim.

·2 years agoIf you shipped it USPS through a class of shipping that has insurance then either you or the buyer can open a USPS claim. The buyer will need to retain the item along with the original packing.
If the buyer has opened some type of claim with eBay such as a NAD you will need to respond to that and most likely refund them. That will also negate their ability to file the USPS claim and it will be on you to do so. However, you will need their assistance as USPS will probably want the buyer to bring the item and the original packing into the local post office for inspection. If they agree to the claim they will likely retain the item as well as the original packing.
I have had to file a couple damage claims over the years and the ONLY ones I have ever won were those where the buyer cooperated with me. You may need to ask the buyer for their personal email and work the claim off eBay since USPS is going to want to contact the buyer regarding the claim and they will not use the eBay message system to do so. If you send them a message through eBay asking for their personal email address made sure you include text something to the effect of I need your personal email to be able to work the claim with USPS.
If you have the item returned to you that will probably void the potential to file a claim. Damage claims are tough to win against USPS but it can be done. I had a friend that had a flat screen TV show up with a forklift fork mark through the box. USPS paid that one just based on the pictures and the fact that the carrier noted the damage when they delivered the package.
