Customer claims a Paypal refund for an item from 3 YEARS ago.
I (I think) finally resolved this with Paypal.
It took three separate phone calls over several days.
I got a notice from PayPal that a customer filed a claim stating they never authorized a payment for an eBay item in Oct. 2020.
At first, I thought it was Oct. 2023 until I realized this was for something I sold on eBay 3 years ago.
Paypal requested that I inject money into my account as the funds were on hold and I now had a negative balance.
I won't go through the arduous process to resolve this (the negative balance is still there but I am told it will soon be resolved).
Even the PayPal reps were confused as once I pointed out how long ago this claim is from, they had to put me on hold multiple times to figure out how to resolve it.
I have no complaints about the PayPal service reps, they were all polite and professional, but it was a complicated process.
So, why would anyone make a claim from so long ago? The other funny thing was that they didn't even claim that they never received the item, they said someone ordered it without their permission.
If I had not pushed to resolve this, the money would still have been taken out of my account.
You would think that this kind of claim would be auto-resolved.
Thankfully I got an email (and still use the same email) as I don't check my PayPal very often.
So, be on the watch.

How were you contacted by PayPal? Was the transaction information provided?
When you talked to PayPal, what did they see at their end on this issue? Did they ask you to verify yourself without providing personal financial information?
Could this be a new scam?

OP2 years agoTo answer some questions:
I received the notice via email.
I checked my PayPal account (thinking it might be a scam) but sure enough, there was a hold on my funds for this transaction (from three years ago).
There was a transaction ID, the eBay transaction info, the amount and the buyer's email - so this was legit.
They had access to an eBay transaction that I no longer have.
I received another email (after I thought it was resolved) saying that if I did not respond, the case would be resolved in the BUYER'S favour (after 3 years!)
The only way I finally got this off my account (I just received confirmation today) was to file a response via their online tool.
I was told, however, that after my initial conversations with them, PayPal had already sided in my favour, however, the emails said otherwise. They said at some point that it could take up to 10 days to resolve (which it did).

·2 years agoI would advise you to report such behavior to eBay, as it may not only be against you, but also against other sellers.
I don't know how important this is to eBay, but it doesn't hurt to do it.

OP2 years agoI wonder if this person just sent a bunch of these to past sellers hoping some of the refunds would work.
Not sure what eBay could do about it as it is on PayPal. They said they had not heard of this happening before so I hope they would now be on the lookout for more from the same buyer.

·2 years agoI had claims for 6 months and 3 months. It doesn't mean buyers will win. There isn't any auto-resolved. eBay does allow it. And yes, my funds got on hold for a day and then released the next day not doing anything.
The negative balance should have dropped off after a day or so. That sounds strange.
