Clear item condition guidelines needed for “Used” listings
Hi everyone,
I wanted to get some opinions on item condition guidelines on eBay.
Recently I have seen some listings marked as “Used” but the items are missing parts or accessories. In my understanding, “Used” should still mean the item is fully functional, whereas missing parts or non-working items should be listed as “For parts or not working.”
This sometimes creates confusion for buyers and leads to disputes.
What is the correct interpretation of “Used” condition according to eBay policies, and how do experienced sellers handle this?

·5 months agoIf you can fit the description in listing heading such as "Nikon S02 Digital Camera 13.2 pixel Not Working Read Description" that should be sufficient.

·5 months agoMy "pet peeve" has always been in the clothing category, generally with condition but specifically NWOT (new without tags). If there are no tags on a garment, how does anyone know it is new? If tags have been removed from a garment, how do we know it is new and not worn at least once? I suspect many sellers say NWOT because it "looks" new, not necessarily that it is new.
And for any seller to only state the condition as "used" in the description, without giving specific details about condition, in any category, is unacceptable. What does that even mean? "Used" can encompass anything from mint condition to total junk.

OP5 months agoI agree—NWOT can be misleading without proper proof or detail, and “Used” alone is too vague. eBay does allow these categories, but clear descriptions and accurate condition details are essential to avoid buyer confusion and disputes.

Here is the eBay policy on item conditions. They vary depending on the category, and are clearly defined.

·5 months agoPotential buyers need to be strongly encouraged to 1) not buy an item that they don't know much about, like I shouldn't be buying coins or cards on eBay and 2) be strongly encouraged to ask questions of sellers before actually making a purchase.

OP5 months agoBuyer awareness is definitely important, especially for niche items, but eBay still requires sellers to accurately describe condition and disclose issues upfront. Asking questions helps, but it doesn’t override listing accuracy requirements.

·5 months agoI would sell a chainsaw that will not start as 'for parts or not working"
I would sell a running chainsaw missing a bar and chain as used.
I would sell a case half of a chainsaw as used.
In the end it is not really if ebay thinks you have used the correct item condition its if the buyer is satisfied with their purchase.

OP5 months agoPractical approach makes sense, but eBay condition guidelines still require accurate representation. If missing parts affect functionality or intended use, “For parts or not working” is often safer to avoid SNAD claims.
