Since when were counterfeit items allowed to be sold?

·4 months agoPeople sell counterfeit items all the time but that doesn't mean they are allowed to be sold.
Ebay doesn't catch all of the listings, in fact they miss quite a few that are ON SALE NOW!
Get them while they are hot!!

·4 months agoJust because cocaine dealers exist doesn’t mean they are allowed to, they just have not been caught yet.

·4 months agoReport it to the company producing the item.........they have the expertise to judge whether it's fake or not, ebay reps don't.

·4 months agoTheir not allowed to, It's just the ebay police have not caught them yet, There are millions upon millions of listings & some get caught violating policies & others do not not but probably will at some point in time.

·4 months agoWill you guys stop arguing with the OP?
He says ebay allows it.

·4 months agoSome people manage to list counterfeit items.
That doesn't mean it's "allowed".
It simply means it's "possible".

·4 months ago@laknascar18 eBay doesn't allow it, but it's a tough problem to resolve - like whack-a-mole.
laknascar18
OP4 months agoIf they're shown information that it is fake and still allow it to be sold then yes they are allowing it. They have a fraud division that's not doing their job. That's the problem
jonathanbrightlight
·4 months agoeBay does not in fact have a division that is an expert in determining if listings are for counterfeit items, or to play judge and jury regarding user reports of such things. That’s a pipe dream.

·4 months agoThere are 1.7 billion active listings on ebay. Even if it's just 1% of all listings that are counterfeit, it's virtually impossible to verify and remove all the fakes.
chapeau-noir
·4 months agoDepends on the 'information' - eBay doesn't have physical possession of these items. They're trying with these 'authenticators' for high-fraud items, but eBay is huge - they'd have to have a warehouse filled with expert employees to determine all of this stuff.
It's not a great situation, but I don't believe it's something that ebay is actively supporting.

·4 months agoDo you think the average eBay rep, who is likely not even American, can tell the difference between a fake Coach and a real Coach? You trying to show it or explain it means nothing. How can you expect them to trust your judgement, like you are the expert? Give me a break.
Ask anybody who deals with items that are often coutnerfitted and they will tell you it is getting harder and harder to spot fakes. You and I may be able to tell just from pictures, but you can't always and a layman normally cannot either. This is why eBay has such a strong, buyer-friendly Money-Back Guarantee. It ensures that no buyer can truly be taken advantage of, except perhaps the fake tracking scam. That's one area that eBay needs to address, which I think will happen if and when eBay takes over managing labels.
Your item may very well be legit. I'll take your word on it. Unfortunately, eBay says it isn't. It's not a perfect system. I've had pleny of things removed that are allowed. At the end of the day, I know that eBay does not need me personally to sell on their platform - and it is their platform, after all. They have to run it in a way that benefits them, which is how any business should operate. Nobody can blame them for that. Life isn't always fair. I learned that when I was 9 years old and my dad left our family, yet all my friend still had their dad. eBay removed your item. If you want to sell it, list it elsewhere. It might be a blessing in disguse. You might have ended up with a buyer who returned it after swapping it with a fake.

·4 months agoWhat information? A couple of pictures? AI cannot 'see' (yet).

·4 months agoCorrect that they have groups that are supposed to address these issues, absolutely agreed that they aren’t doing a great job. That’s just my take on it.
I could probably sell the shroud of Turin 20 times over for $100 a pop, and eBay wouldn’t find a fault with my listing. But, if I list “call me“ by Blondie, they’ll nab me for trying to sell off eBay.

·4 months agoAre you of the opinion that a human reviews every listing that gets listed on Ebay at any given time? I am simply asking a question to better understand your position and potentially giving information that may allow us to give you a more detailed response / information.
marnotom!
·4 months agoThe problem is that there are lots of listings where one can suspect that counterfeit merchandise is being sold just by looking at the listing, but not too many where one can actually prove it before the merchandise is actually purchased. eBay’s AI tries, but doesn’t always get it right.
laknascar18
OP4 months agoThey remove it and give the seller the chance to show it's legit. Pictures are proof when authentic and fake are shown to see the difference. They can easily check it, that's their job. That's proof before it's purchased. Explain how one agent says it fake and another says it's not.
marnotom!
·4 months agoHow does one know that the picture is of the item being sold?
eBay agents aren’t hired to be experts in counterfeit merchandise and, like any human being, are fallible.
soh.maryl
·4 months agoNo one employed by eBay sees items that are listed for sale here. Yes, there are authenticators, but they have to be a very, very small percentage of eBay's total volume.
One agent can say it's fake and another can say it's not because neither of them actually sees the item.
And, what if I, a seller of the same types of things you sell, could report every single one of your listings to eBay as counterfeit, and eBay would accept my claim and take all your listings down, solely on my word, would that be right?

·4 months agoThey aren't.
If you've received something that appears to be, you can return it under the MBG. Avoid what appears to be, obviously.
laknascar18
OP4 months agoYou can read my first reply, obviously
stainlessenginecovers
·4 months agoSince when were sellers advertising 'Counterfeit' Items. Is that actually in the Title??
laknascar18
OP4 months agoObviously nobody puts that in the description. You do know pictures are also used to see what the item is. If you didn't know well you do now
msha3839
·4 months agoNot sure why you so aggravated and annoyed by responses, but none of us on the forums, you included, can’t change anything…simply operate your brain cells when buying something and in worst case, return it..
laknascar18
OP4 months agoSimply operate your brain cells to at least try to read my situation. I didn't buy anything. Also not aggravated or annoyed by the responses. You reply by being rude I'm just correcting you the same way. They have these forums for a reason. I don't expect you or anyone else to change anything, I simply asked a question.
roccotacodad54
·4 months ago" I didn't buy anything."
Huh? "Being it was years ago and I have no receipt to show where it was purchased"
You did buy something and found out it was bogus after you tried to resell it, correct?
Yours was flagged and others slipped by. That doesn't mean eBay condones counterfeit items, just that policing it is problematic. Yea it's unfortunate that happened to you but...........................

You do know the 'bot' system ONLY looks at titles and does NOT look at Pictures or Descriptions?
You do know that you can NOT always tell by a photo if an item is 'fake' or not?

laknascar18
OP4 months agoUnfortunately you're correct
inhawaii
·4 months agoThey're not.
Just because you see some listed does not mean ebay "allows" it.
That's like saying ... why do the police allow people to speed.
laknascar18
OP4 months agoThey most certainly do. I listed an item I received years ago and never used. I listed it and a few days later I got a message saying it was removed because they "believed" it was counterfeit. I checked for any listing that was for the same exact item as mine and I found 7 of the same item listed. Being it was years ago and I have no receipt to show where it was purchased, I didn't file an appeal. I got all the information to show those same items were also "counterfeit" I sent pictures of the counterfeit vs the authentic and explained the differences. An agent reviewed it and said they weren't counterfeit. I reported them again and then they found 2 were fake but the others that are the same exact item wasn't. So yes they are allowing it
inhawaii
·4 months agoOk, if you say so, ebay allows it.
bonanza125
·4 months ago"An agent reviewed it and said they weren't counterfeit."
Agents aren't experts you are the expert. If you see a listing which is counterfeit report it, don't buy it and move on. If you purchase an item which is counterfeit return it with 30 days. There really isn't much else you can do. The vision you have what Ebay should be which is this perfect place where there are no counterfeits at all and no scammers doesn't exist. You as the buyer have to be aware of the items you are purchasing. Review feedback and review seller profile.

·4 months agoI had a similar situation.
A year or two ago I bought 2 cases of Jack Daniels lighters on ebay.
When I went to list them for sale individually, my listing was taken down as counterfeit.
There were several others up for sale on ebay at the time.
Yes, I was upset but that still doesn't mean "ebay allows counterfeits".
I gave the lighters away as free gifts to my customers with larger orders.

·4 months agoDo you know what happens if you try to light Jack Daniels on fire?
