Can you sell on Ebay without being violated?
Summary: bobspamming expressed frustration over eBay’s requirement for access to bank account details, seeing it as invasive and unnecessary. janet9988 and others suggested there's no way around it if one wants to sell on eBay. gurlcat and others offered practical advice, recommending setting up a separate bank account specifically for eBay transactions to maintain privacy. Some participants reassured that they haven't faced issues with privacy violations, while others agreed that adapting to these requirements is part of the current digital age.
I have had my ebay account for over 25 years with several bank accounts linked in the past. I never removed the last account i used but their system un-linked it when when Ebay changed things some time back. I was only a buyer and not a seller at that time so i didn't really care.
I have a few things to sell but apparently giving ebay full invasive visibility into my financials (and therefore larger life) is now being asked (Demanded?) by them. When linking an account it says:
"By selecting, you agree to our use of your bank account details, full name, account balances, and transaction history to provide you with payment processing and personalize offers for financial services."
Note that contrary to the flag on my account "Your payouts are on hold until you update your account details. Please update to avoid further restrictions." and "Add your bank account. This is where we’ll send your payouts."
I didn't and don't mind them asking for a linked bank account that bares the same name as my ebay account as part of identity verification. But it is madness for anyone to give flipping ebay access to all transactions and balances for them to sell our data for "personalize offers for financial services." This is utter BS. It has nothing to do with "verifying" me, or getting me payment. All that was solved by ebay and paypal 20+ years ago. This is abusive data collection having nothing to do with the ebay service or community.
Am i stuck opening a dummy account as my only option or is there any reasonable path available to sell on ebay?
P.S. Unless you are an adult film star / communist that live streams your whole life you DO expect privacy for you are your family to some degree. Generally even very intelligent people DO NOT understand what data is being collected and what it is being used for. So spare me any "this is just the world we live in" defeatist nonsense. Let's be willing to call abuse abuse.

·3 weeks agoVerifying your account is only a part of you getting paid. You are not only allowing eBay to deposit money into your account you are also authorizing eBay to withdraw money from your account if they have a need to. If you do not have enough money in the account during an attempted withdraw you could be charge a Insufficient Funds Fee.
I don't think eBay will accept a "dummy account" as verification. It needs to be an actual legitimate account that they can make payments into and withdraws out of.

·3 weeks agoI'm not seeing where communist adult film stars come into this, but 'expecting' privacy is a little naive - you have to ensure it. That is the world we live in. Open a free-standing account for transactions here - it's better to keep this stuff separate.
So far the only offers for financial services I've gotten have been through site messages, though. Maybe they send me emails but I never read 'em as I don't use email here.

·3 weeks agoAll EBAY sellers are required to provide EBAY with your social security number and checking account number (that is how you get paid). After sale is made, EBAY deposits money directly into your checking account.
I just opened a separate bank account just for EBAY.

·3 weeks agoNot exactly sure how you are defining a "dummy" account in this discussion, but it is indeed a good idea to have a separate checking account at your bank or credit union specifically for eBay business and nothing else. That way your personal funds are not exposed if things go seriously sideways in your eBay account. It's also much easier to reconcile at tax time when all the numbers involve just one account.

·3 weeks agoThe only financial offers I receive are high interest loans to finance my business.
Online marketplaces require access to a bank account.
The account I use for Ebay is not used for anything else other than PayPal which I hardly use.
I have never used my main personal account for any selling activity and never will.
All of my accounts are free. Free checking accounts are plentiful.
You are getting yourself upset over a problem with an easy and cheap solution.

·3 weeks agoI don't receive personalized offers for financial services. Not sure why it says that, but there's really nothing to worry about and it's just what you have to provide if you want the payments for your sales.

·3 weeks agoUGH. Yeah I wanna slap Black Hoodie Guy into next Thursday, but if it's either see him or not get paid, the choice is pretty easy.

·3 weeks agoAlso, at least I know I'm going to see BHG every time I go to my Payments screen and I'm ready to click that 'X.' The REAL deal-breaker would be if I was receiving unwanted emails, texts, or (worst of all) push notifications with noises at random times.
