Can you deduct 50% of a return if the item was heavily used?
Selling my hard drive and it seems like a data center / small reseller purchased it which worries me they’ll just use it and return it heavily used before my 30 day return window. It currently has 360 hours on it which in hard drive terms is mint but used. If they return it with say 20,000+ hrs or some heavy writes can I deduct anything from the return? If they return it heavily used I'm unlikely to make as much money as my initial sale or any for that matter

I doubt that they are buying it to heavily use it, then return it.
I just sold a laptop to a business that sells laptops.
I didn't give it a second thought.

·5 months agoI, too, think this amounts to a lot of needless worrying. It's a hard drive, not a prom dress. Clothing sellers are typically the group that gets hit hardest with this kind of nonsense. It would have to be a person with a lot of time on their hands and nothing better to do with his/her time, who would even consider doing what you're describing. Hard drives just aren't that valuable (400 bucks tops?), nor that much fun to install and remove, never mind ship back.

·5 months agoI think you are worrying about a phantom unicorn of an issue. For one thing your account shows nothing sold ever, nothing listed.
Second, there are only 720 hours in a month. The number of hours you describe takes over 2 years of constant uptime.
Third, it isn't worth the labor cost of any datacenter to purchase used hard drives, put them in for 4 weeks and then pull them out and return them.

OP5 months agothis is my buyer account. It's not so much just the hours but data written also but yea see your point hopefully everythings fine

·5 months agoDon't worry be happy about receiving this hard drive back with 20K hours as that would be 820.83333 days.
PS: I deducted the 300 hours you stated it currently has. 30 days is just a mere 720 additional hours..

I think you are worried about nothing, as I had mentioned to you in my message.
Relax. If they are a large broker of drives, then they bought it for a reason and are highly unlikely to mess with you. If their feedback left for others are not full of negatives about bad sellers, you will be fine. As I had mentioned, that would be the only red flag in my book. If a buyer's feedback left for others showed a LOT of negatives they had left others. One here and there, meh. I have even left a few over the years, when it was deserved.

Just because it "seems like a data center / small reseller purchased it" doesn't mean they're going to scam you with a return.
Does their feedback indicate that they "rent" items?
I'm curious why you'd jump to that assumption.

OP5 months agoWell the feedback just seems odd to me. The buyer doesn't leave feedback but has tons of good feedback from sellers. The feedback from sellers though seems like it's copy and pasted word for word or sounds the same coming from different accounts. I'm just worried since it seems like a business now they may mess with the internals etc.

·5 months agoFeedback is voluntary, not required, so this buyer may not leave feedback for anyone. Many don't. A lot of sellers have feedback set up to post automatically as soon as the buyer pays or when the item ships. eBay has a lot of stock replies that can be used in feedback for either buyers or sellers. That's why a lot of those you mentioned as "copy and pasted" may appear that way. eBay also now has automated feedback that they leave after a period of time when buyers or sellers do not leave feedback and it's always the same wording.

·5 months ago@snazzplatypus Your buyer has 30-days to return it, unless you offer 60-days. Either way, they would come nowhere near using 20,000 hours in that amount of time.
Edit: Disregard everything below. The OP is not Top Rated, so they will not be able to deduct a dime.

·5 months agoYou can, as long as you can prove it. However, you are better off being pro-active instead of reactive when it comes to the potential of problematic returns by unscrupulous buyers who abuse the system.

OP5 months agoThanks I’ve documented the health before shipping hours, data written etc. what do you mean by be pro-active? New to selling so not sure what you mean. I’ve documented all the data even sent the buyer pictures of the packaging. Don’t think there’s much more I can do.
before shipping I check names, address and see if they’re a business which unfortunately this one seems like it is but I can’t cancel.

·5 months agoMeaning that you can adjust your return policies, add additional title info and condition description, including what's expected from a potential buyer and cost of their return if needed.

OP5 months agoSince i'm not top rated I did 30 day returns and return shipping on me. I was gonna add a return policy description but didn’t think it would matter since eBay overrides it anyway but may add something to future listings. Just saying if heavily used a deduction of 50% will be withheld.

I read the policy back a few times to make sure and it seems I can get up to 50% back

·5 months agoIf you offer free 30 day returns, you can deduct some from the refund if an item is returned in a different condition.

·5 months agoI believe this is NOT true.
It only applies if you are a "top rated plus" seller.
I believe at least 2 of the requirements for top rated plus are:
*60 day (or 90?) free returns
*1 day handling
Someone smarter than me will come along and confirm this.

Well, now I see in another thread where you said you did free return shipping. Ugh. I don't know why you have multiple threads on the same subject going. You say in one that you did 30 day returns. Then, you say in the other one you did 30-day free returns. If you did 30-day free returns, then you will be able to reduce the refund as long as your account does not drop to below standard.
