Can we sell business shirts that have "In memory of" with person's name on them?
So I recently bought a few shirts at a yard sale that are company shirts. The guy told me they were his when he worked at the company back in the 90's I think he said. Some of the shirts have "In memory of" with a person's full name embroidered on the back neck part of the shirt. I have no idea who the person is. I should've asked the guy when I bought them but I didn't even notice it until after I had left the yard sale. My question is are we allowed to sell shirts like this? I wanted to sell all the shirts together in a lot but if the shirt's with the person's name embroidered on it can't then I can just exclude them.

·10 months agoI have sold books and other items with names in them. What I do is digitally remove them on the photograph so the whole ebay world does not see it but then I mention in the description that there is a name written on the front page or something to that effect.

·10 months agoIf it’s embroidered, it can be removed. With some sewing skills, a seam ripper, and tweezers, someone could carefully take out/off the embroidery.

·10 months agoPeople sell stuff all the time with names in/on them............books have owners name (and addresses sometimes)..........paper items, letters, etc have names. Name is in the phone book (if there are still phone books)...........

·10 months agoThere are 22 shirts from that place listed and three sold.
We would put them all up individually as auctions, mentioning in the description that you have others from the same place.

·10 months agoI doubt you will have much luck selling something like that, I don't know who would want to walk around promoting a Notorious Porno king, Or just the other part of in Memory of someone they don't even know, Either way a Very Tough Sell, But you can never say never. Up to you!

Why not photograph and list one shirt to see if it sells or not.
I looked at Larry Flynt stuff and it looks like people collect it. If I were collecting those items, I would want the shirt as a collector item, not to wear, so that deceased's name wouldn't bother me. Personally, I think that name on the back of the neck adds a uniqueness to it. JMHO

·10 months agoI echo pickapaper........ We all have our individual opinions about things.........but that doesn't mean everyone else thinks the same way..... Larry Flynt was a big name at one time and I've no doubt there are some collectors of his stuff.... what does it hurt to try a listing?

OP10 months agoMy concern was selling something that had someone's name on it. Isn't that considered personal information?

·10 months agoNo. A name is just a name. (I, for example, as a British RAF pilot, hold the world land speed record, set in 1997, and as a Black person, I hold a record for most consecutive games played for the Dallas Mavericks.) If you want to put my name on your shirt, feel free; I can't stop you.

·10 months agoSure although I have no idea who would want to buy them other than maybe the widow of the deceased. I would just donate those and take the tax write-off.

·10 months ago@casey-86 Larry Flynt was a well-known pornographer. He owned Hustler magazine, among other pornographic ventures, strip clubs, etc. The clubs are in various cities across the country.
Those are going to be a hard thing to get people to fork money over for because of the name. Things with unknown names, even if on something that is otherwise desirable, are bad buys all around. Do you realize how many Carhartt jackets I pass on because they were given as company gifts and have the (often) former employee's name embroidered on them?
You can list and sell it, no problem there. I think I'd exclude the shirts with the dead person's name on it. The people interested in your lot are not going to want those, which means the shirts my sit for a while or you will have to slash the price. If you want, maybe include one of them. Don't saddle the lot with more than that. Just my .02¢.

OP10 months agoYea I didn't really like that when I learned more about the company. The guy at the yard sale told me it was a "Gentleman's Club" when I asked him what the company was. I probably wouldn't have bought them had I known more about them. I only paid $5 for all of them so it seemed like a good deal.

·10 months agoLOL yeah they might have called it that back in the days but Hustler was serious smut, we're talking very explicit.

OP10 months agoThats not the name embroidered on the "in memory of" part of the shirts. The company name "Larry Flynt's Hustler Club" is on the shirts as the company name.

·10 months agoThrow those out or donate to a shelter, maybe.... I'm with @caldreamer...who wants to wear a second hand shirt in memory of someone they dont know?

OP10 months agoThese shirts are from a company called Larry Flynt's Hustler Club which going by what I've seen online is some kind of adult themed club. Shirts for this company are selling anywhere between $20-50 here on eBay it seems. I don't know who may want a shirt with am embroidery like what I mentioned in my OP. My only concern is if a shirt like this can be listed for sale. I just want to sell them all in a single lot if possible but if it would make people not want to buy them I can exclude them.

·10 months agoI can't imagine any customer wanting a shirt with someone's name embroidered on it. Is the name visible or inside the shirt collar?
casey-86
OP10 months agoIts embroidered on the outside of the shirt right below the neck collar.

Have you googled? Is the deceased anyone who might garner interest?
casey-86
OP10 months agoI could give it a try. It might be some notable person who was involved with the company.

I once sold a bunch of Childress Racing SWAG with Dale Sr's (RIP) name on it. It happens all the time.
casey-86
OP10 months agoI didn't find any information about the name being linked to the company in any way so my guess is it was probably an employee where the guy worked at instead of an owner of some kind. I think I'll just exclude the shirts with the embroidery. Either that or I guess I could also message the future buyer and let them know I have a couple shirts with the embroidery on them I can include if they would like them.
