Can new sellers not promote listings?
I tried to do a test to see if the suggested promotion rate on a specific item is universal or has anything to do with being 'me' as a seller, so I took all the details of one of my listings and created an identical dummy listing in my buyer account, from which I've never listed anything before.
Incidentally the whole creation page looked really different and simpler (fewer things to fill out, for example the 'Condition' was ONLY a menu of choices -new, used, etc., no text box for writing details about the condition). Also the blank photo frames had little cartoon symbols of items like shoes, cameras and I don't remember what all, but I don't see those when I create a listing in my seller account. I don't know what explains so much difference, if it's because I only access my buyer account on a different browser (to keep myself from getting them mixed up) or if clicking the 'Use business tool' would make it like my seller account and I did that with my seller account years ago but don't remember .... if anyone knows why these listing pages are so different let me know.
But back to the main thing I was trying to check: the SAR of promoting this item. When I got to the bottom of the page .... there was no promotion setup feature. I can't think of any reason they wouldn't offer it to a "new" seller, not like they would have any reason not to "trust" a new person when the fee automatically gets charged/taken upon successfully selling the item. So anybody know why it's not there?

·2 years ago@gurlcat Your PLS question has been answered, but to answer your other question: newbies DO see a simplified version of the listing form. I'm not sure at what point they "graduate" to the regular form, but I do know for a while at least, they only have access to the simple form. It's been that way for at least a few years now

·2 years agoThis is a very good rule. New sellers need to learn how to sell before being able to use all the bells and whistles. They need time to learn so they can grow accordingly and offering good customer service. There is so much for a new seller to learn just the basics of selling, it would setting them up for failure by letting them use all the available tools to. That simply would be overwhelming IMHO.

·2 years agoNot only what MAM said, but how many posts do we see from new sellers confused about fee basics. Or, for that matter, long time sellers that just now realized eBay fees apply to total cost including shipping (which has been in place for over 10 yrs). Adding PL fees to the mix when a new seller hasn't yet grasped how regular fees, listing fees, reserve fees, etc work is a great reason to restrict them from using promotions.
PL gets more search placement and new sellers may not have learned the listing/shipping ropes yet. Or they could be new scammers and why make it easier for them to put their goods in front of buyers before they're caught?
Agree with MAM - many great reasons for eBay to restrict new sellers from promoted listings and other features.

·2 years agoNew sellers do not have access to promoted listings. This is common across numerous eBay selling tools, including $ threshold for EIS eligibility (items above $500 won't be eligible until the seller establishes a track record even though their lower priced listings reflect EIS).

I'm not sure actual thresholds, but need some activity before it becomes avaliable.
