By providing AI generative tools, you are actively telling us to lie to our customers.
Leaving aside all the other moral issues with LLM AI, when you tell us to take photos of the things we're selling and use your AI to make new images or videos, that's basically lying to our customers. I'll have no part in that.
You may or may not flag the AI produced videos and images as such, but that's pretty much irrelevant. It is trivial to simply take the video, cancel the process, then reupload the generated video to avoid whatever indicator you may use.
I know you need to satisfy your investors, but the push to wedge in LLM AI into every single business whether it has any reason to exist there or not shows. I don't expect you'll actually do anything about this, but if nothing else, hey, at least I've indicated my rejection of the tech and hopefully will draw the type of customer who is also sickened by these false advertisements to a shop that won't be part of it.

·1 year ago@dark_jaguar it's even worse than that - eBay is now also happy to use AI to lie to your potential customers on your behalf without your explicit knowledge or consent and no way to opt out even once you find out about it.
First, it was discovered that eBay is using AI to summarize item descriptions for listings which are cross posted to Facebook Marketplace as part of eBay's partnership with Meta - and in at least one example the AI added details indicating items were included when the seller provided description did not mention those items at all.

In theory you can opt out of having your listings posted to FB, but in practice, some have had difficulty doing so.
But even worse, eBay is also testing showing AI description summaries in the app for some items/to some buyers without the sellers knowledge or consent and there does not appear to be any way to identify which of your items may have the AI summary at any given time and no way for sellers to opt out.

And just to be clear - this has nothing to do with whether sellers choose to use the AI description generator or AI background enhancer tools within the listing process, this is something completely separate that eBay is doing all on their own with no input from the seller.
Meanwhile, eBay keeps gaslighting users (and investors) by saying all their AI tools are "built in close collaboration with our Responsible AI team to ensure they align with our values of safety, fairness, transparency, and accountability."

I'd love to know how eBay believes undisclosed testing of AI features that may insert incorrect or misleading information into what is shown to buyers with no way for sellers to opt out is in any way safe, fair, transparent, or responsible.
Also, don't forget eBay is using all of your site activity and personal data to train their AI, unless you've opted out.

Thank you for bringing up the text side of things. I am making a statement right here and now. I do not stand by ANY statement eBay themselves write for my store or items I'm selling. I only stand by the things I've actually typed.
Thank you also for sharing a way to opt out of using my own item descriptions in their "training data". I've opted out. I too highly object to the direction they're taking things and demand an opt-out of AI generated descriptions (or in the future, photos and videos) being put up on any partner page or the mobile app or wherever else they want to stick them. I alone should be solely responsible for the claims I make on my items.
Since it was auto-opted into without my knowledge, I consider whatever they've scraped from me up until the opt-out to be theft, and I do not accept "everyone's already doing it" as an excuse, nor do I accept that it being profitable is an excuse. I could start scamming all my customers by selling empty boxes to them and call it "profitable", but I'd still get rightfully sued for fraud over it.

We all know that the seller is responsible for the content in their listings.
We also know how AI can be manipulated. Be it images, text, or videos it will lead to problems.
I agree 100% with the OP and, personally, I'll have nothing to do with it.

·1 year agoThis is a trust issue. Is AI trustworthy... yet?How exactly should it be used? EBay should highlight the need to use the tool to "assist" only, not as a tool to replace or automate listing creation or development. This is especially important for new sellers who could easily assume that it's integration means it's trustworthy.

·1 year agoThe biggest problem is that the AI-generated descriptions are completely cringeworthy and bear ZERO resemblance to anything an actual marketing person would write for that specific item, especially in the collectibles, antiques, vintage categories.
Given the hot garbage that the AI-generated text is, there's no way in heck I would ever trust it to a create a video for an item. Who knows what off-the-wall irrelevant meme content it will try to stick in there.
eBay's AI tools need to go die in a fire.

·1 year agoSo you are saying using AI information is incorrect & therefore telling the customers a lie, Unless you correct the issues that AI created, But I get it why use AI if you have to correct it, You may as well do your own work knowing that is is correct.

·1 year agoUsing AI is just like using the information Ebay provides in the IS section, it's not always right.
I tried listing a book one time and the IS that Ebay provided was all wrong, so I had to change it before listing.
I haven't used the AI that Ebay provides so I don't know how accurate it is, but I would check everything.

·1 year agoI think the OP is referring to the potential, embellishment of AI generated data, whether it's descriptions, photos or videos. I too am concerned about, not just the moral issue, but also the increased risks of INADs.

·1 year agoEven if AI is used, seller still has to make sure everything in the listing is correct.
If something isn't correct, seller needs to correct it before publishing the listing.
