"Buyers" receiving products that they didn't order. Scam?
Hi, I have been receiving orders for one particular item, and had been fulfilling the said orders for a few weeks until we started getting calls from the recipients.
All of the orders had different usernames, full names and addresses, but most of them had "11111111111" as their phone number.
While we thought this was weird, it isn't rare to see people using invalid phone numbers for their orders so we didn't think much of it.
So, when we started getting phone calls from the recipients who claimed that they never ordered the product (some of them had never even used ebay before), it was very alarming.
We had likely fulfilled over 60 orders like this at that point, and got calls from 7 different recipients.
Here's what we gathered:
1. Someone or multiple people are creating new, random accounts to place orders for one particular item of low value, and are shipping them to random addresses.
2. Recipients who called us confirmed that their full name and address match the shipping information on the order.
3. Recipients were never charged for the order, it's just their names and addresses that are being used.
4. We have yet to see any chargeback or refund request.
We alerted Ebay who told us that if we continue to cancel orders that we deem fraudulent, our metrics will suffer but Ebay will step in and help if our account is suspended for it since they are aware of this situation.
We deactivated the listing for the time being, but it was one of our best selling items and we would like to start selling it again, but only if it is safe for us to do so.
Has anyone gone through this issue? It seems that scammers are getting more and more relentless.
Any input would be helpful. Thank you.

·3 years agoHi- we’re the orders for baseball cards, stamps, etc. things that can be mailed in standard envelopes but possibly could jam mail sorters at the post office?
I received a bunch of these items and have a theory regarding why it happened.
