Buyer's Canceling orders on local pickup
I have a problem and I don't know what to do to solve it.
An item I am selling is listed as LOCAL PICKUP ONLY because it's a cheap item but very large and just not worth the shipping cost. Problem is, a lot of ebay buyers are hitting the buy it now button, paying for the item, and then a few days later they cancel the order because they live 1000+ miles away and never bothered to check the item's location. It's like a special kind of stupid.
If I sell this item five times to five different buyers, four of them will cancel because they're hundreds or thousands of miles away.
Suggestions? I'm getting kind of tired of this stuff.

·4 months agoI agree with the suggestions of selling it on a site which offers dealing with locals. Much easier and not have to deal with people who don't read pick up only.

All you can do is make your listing super clear that this is local pick up only.
NOTICE: This item on local pick-up only and will not be shipped.

·4 months agoThe problem is too many buyers do not bother reading all the details & you will get interested people from all over the country, You would be much better off just trying to sell it locally on Craigslist or some other venue.

OP4 months agoThank you to everyone for the suggestions.
I added the text to the title and included my zip code. Hopefully this works.
People are stupid.

·4 months agoI agree with putting it in all caps in your title. We used to have problems with that more often, but we started putting at least “PICKUP” in the title in all caps and it really cut down on the issues.

I suggest putting in capital letters as part of the title.

My suggestion? Sometimes you have to adjust your selling practices to match the reality of the marketplace.
Although eBay has a place for you to specify your shipping terms, buyers are clearly not seeing it. So you probably need to adjust your listing so that they will see this. I sugest putting in capital letters as part of the title.
You have direct control over your own listing, but you do not have direct control lver the behavior of 165 million active eBay buyers.

·4 months agoWhen this happens to us rather than waiting for the buyer to cancel I simply cancel & refund and use the reason option issue with the address so I don't incur an account issue.

·4 months agoMaybe use LOCAL PICKUP ONLY as part of the title?
Have the buyers of the 8 that have already sold come to pick them up?
As soon as you see that the person appears to expect it to be shipped, can you not cancel, using problem with address as reason and explain to the buyer why you cancelled?
And, yes, I do agree with others: This seems like something that could work better listed on local venues.

·4 months agoYou have plenty of space left in your title to say
50 gallon burn barrel local pick up only
You can even say
Beautiful Large red 50 gallon burn barrel local pick up only
You get 80 characters/spaces in the title. Go wild.

·4 months agoMaybe creat an image with text saying “Local pickup only. No exceptions” and upload it as one of the listing photos?
