Buyer won an auction. Apparently some 'beta' program that who/when/why/how guy, buyer, scammer was opted into has reared it's ugly head again and I'm the lucky seller this time around? Yea baby. Can someone please enlighten me on this. Small sale, but wow eBay, wow. Just more stand up comedy from the 'world's largest marketplace'. Unreal.
This is the 2nd time I've seen this. First time around, the buyer didn't pay (yep, after 7 days). Had to re-auction the item and it sold for over 25% less - just a mere ~$45 ish loss 15 days later. Oh, and yea - unable to leave the a buyer negative feedback - that's right.
Someone has got to start getting this stuff out on X or find a fun, creative way to have a good time with this comical nonsense. Borderline criminal.. definitely disrespectful, yet again.
Please, can someone please enlighten me? Perhaps, not with the token corporate pompom's? Day after day, after day... selling on here just keeps getting more and more bizarre.

I think it is a great idea to allow buyers to wait until other auctions are over so they can combine shipping.
I recently did on several items from the same seller that end over 10 days apart. I ended up winning a half dozen items totaling over $300.00. I wouldn’t of bid on some of the other items if the seller didn’t combine shipping.
I don’t do auctions very often but I had to re-auction an item because the first buyer didn’t pay and it went for more the second time around awhile ago.
Also, I’ve offered items to under bidders thru eBay’s second chance option when high bidder didn’t pay and the under bidder was glad to buy it. Have you tried it?

That said — when eBay rolls out or phases in a major policy or feature that drastically impacts sellers, they should:
Make it optional. Don’t blindside sellers the moment an auction ends. Who does that?? Oh right... eBay.
Let us opt IN or OUT with a simple switch in the business policies area — just like international shipping or the 15 other wildly simple yet somehow mind-numbingly confusing toggle switches, fill-in-the-blanks, and “guess what we’re thinking†settings in there 😂
Or — I don’t know — maybe just give us a heads up?
You know… a friendly little:
“Hey valued seller, new beta program incoming — here’s what it is, here’s how to join, here’s how it works.â€
Instead, it’s the classic “You gotta be kidding me, eBay… Nooo. Seriously? Come on. UGHHH.†moment we’ve all had way too many times.

Seven days to ‘shop more’ instead of the usual four?
Cool in theory — but how do they decide which buyers get that option?
In my case, it was randomly applied. The buyer didn’t shop for anything else. They didn’t message. They didn’t pay. They just ghosted — for seven days — and still got a high five from eBay for it. Meanwhile, I’m sitting here wondering how I’m supposed to build trust or efficiency with that nonsense hanging over my listings.
I’m constantly mind-blown. Just genuinely baffled. Like… **bleep** now, eBay? Really?? Come on, guys...
It’s frustrating because the potential is massive — eBay could dominate for years to come. But instead, they keep tripping over their own feet, breaking stuff that wasn’t broken, ignoring UX, disrespecting sellers, and pounding their chest like they nailed it.
So yeah — great concept. Subpar execution once again, however. Come on eBay - you're better than this!

·4 months agoThe issue with the 7-day period is, it applies even when I don’t have any other items on auction. So they get to lock up payment for 7 days. Three of these wonderful humans waited three or four days to even engage and then started asking about the item as if they didn’t need to purchase. Every feature has a batch of loophole players that run it out and play games. This should really be something the seller decides to offer. If I have a multiple items with staggered closing dates or times, great, I turn it on. If I have all of them closing at the same time, they automatically combine, so why the 7 day wait? To allow scammers to play games?!?
Over 20 years on eBay and it keeps getting worse.

Many buyers hate it too so you may be shrinking your bidder pool with it turned on.

OP1 year agoHello @campanaelia Nothing to do w/ auto-pay / cc etc required. This pertains to the nice surprise I received from eBay w/o notice when they were apparently using a few guinea pig auctions for their beta/test "buyer wants more time to shop around the store blah blah" feature which gave them 7 days as opposed to 4... then the buyer ended up not even paying after all of that. I didn't opt in/out of anything. It hasn't happened to me since, thank goooodness.
Bit of a thread at this point but perhaps wortha read (or laugh?)

Yes, it does. It is the retention of the "Buyer Rules" shown to you in message #8 that cause this. If you turn them off, then YOU get to choose the number of days you want to allow your buyer to shop (and thus combine items for one shipping price).
Though said to intended to cut down on a "non-paying buyer" situation eBay came up with this elaborate plan. Instead of just sanctioning buyers that didn't follow the rules and PAY, they decided to monetize the situation to eBay's advantage instead. Buyers were not happy about having their payment source tapped after each auction win, and losing the ability to benefit from combined shipping. So as buyer's figured out the "New Enhanced Smoother Way to Pay", was nothing of the sort, eBay's plan did more to run off PAYING buyers that curb the activity of the miscreants. Sellers wonder why they don't get offers anymore, or their auctions end up with zero or one bid.......Oh, they can always pay more to promote!!! LOL.
As a buyer of rather small articles that are typically sold at auction, if I ran across something I was interested in, I would check the rest of the seller's listings to see what else they were offering as well so that the items could be combined for one shipping price. (Think ten pairs of earrings with a shipping cost of $5 each. I would be stupid to proceed on bidding, knowing those ten pairs of earrings would cost $50 in shipping alone). NOW I just check to see if they have the Buyer Rules (aka Auto-Pay) turned on. If a payment source is required, I don't proceed and move on. That seller will not get my bids or my money. eBay does not tell sellers the settings are there, much less what they do.
Sellers USED to get paid faster for auctions at the risk of getting paid less. Now they get paid less and have to wait longer.

·1 year agoIt's an option presented to buyers for auction format listings. It's called, "Shop more, ship together," and eBay started testing it before the holidays.
With auto-pay on auctions, sellers cannot send a combined shipping invoice. This is eBay's solution to that.
It's still in very early days and I've seen some feedback from buyers and sellers, but not that much.
Watch this video to learn how it works. There's a 6 min demo, followed by about 15 min of Q&A. The Q&A part is just audio.
You're saying your buyer did not pay after 7 days, but the buyer is supposed to be auto-charged after 7 days. I am assuming in your case the buyer's payment method failed because that's the only reason why the auto-charge wouldn't happen (as far as we've been informed). Assuming you cancelled for non-payment your buyer did get a nonpayment strike.
If the buyer's payment failed, the same thing would have happened even if there was no 7 day window, the only difference is you would have been able to relist a week earlier. The bad news for sports cards is that week can have a big impact on value.
Definitely watch the video - there's discussion around the 10-11 min mark about potentially shortening the 7 day window in the future.
