Buyer wants to cancel after Order is shipped???
UPDATE: was able to ask ups to return it to sender, now I guess I wait.
So, pls help, This is the first time I encounter this and I dont know what to do, basically I sold a phone on ebay. before i sent it, I told buyer it will be send via ups ground and all he said was thank you. He paid for the phone thursday night, shipped it friday morning, and now saturday morning he messaged saying it wont arrive in time and wants to cancel the transaction, how are you gonna go about this? I really wanted to get a restocking fee but I dont know how to go about that, attached are the conversation. pls pls help.

OP1 year agoUPDATE: This is our latest message. also I did google his name and address. He is indeed a doctor and the address is kinda high class neighborhood . So maybe he is telling the truth? Or his account got hacked?? Still waiting for my item to be back.

Generally speaking eBay+high end cell phone + newbie seller is most often a recipe for disaster. Scammers are quite savvy and are counting on YOU not knowing the procedures. Until you earn some more feedback, you are going to be a scam magnet for quite some time.
In one of your messages in the screen shot, you mentioned cancelling the 'auction' so you could sell it to this person. The "person" likely knew the item would likely bring more money. Did you happen to check the feedback for this buyer? eBay is making it a bit more difficult to actually get to the correct page now where you can evaluate things a bit more closely. If the "person" has a zero feedback, but is a registered user you can use this link if you don't know how to tweak a URL:

There are others to get you to the right place, but this should suffice at this time. The page that appears is the same as if we clicked on the feedback number under a poster's name. It is the only place you can see the country of registration of the buyer.
Scams like the "text me scammer" or the "change of address scammer" are usually played against newbie sellers. They are the easiest to recognize and simple to avoid. It is the scammer that has the "money to play" that is the most dangerous. They often don't mind paying more than the product is worth, since they plan on getting the item for free in the long run anyway.
Did you go the buyer's feedback page to see in what country they are registered? Did you check to see if the ship to address was to a commercial entity such as a freight forwarder? (You have added protections if you know one was used, so long as you know what to do. Believe me, eBay is not going to tell you). Most of these are in "tax free states" such as Delaware, Oregon, S.Fl (tax free zones), but there are plenty in New York, and Texas. After all what is a little sales tax, when you are about to get an expensive cell phone for free anyway.
Sell this sort of thing local for cash. Just about anything can be had for free (at the seller's expense) on eBay with the right kind of phony scam. i.e. Delivery or signature confirmation does not help you if the buyer claims it arrived broken. If you accept a return and get a box of paper clips instead of that phone, eBay is not going to help you. Faulty returns, they say, are part of doing business.
New sellers are alway warned to NOT post anything for sale that you are not prepared to lose. We now add 'prepared to LOSE AND pay extra to get a faulty return'.
If the recall is successful, and you get the item back, I would likely NOT cancel the order. That is going to initiate a full refund to the buyer, even if you use "buyer requested" as the reason and avoid the defect. You want to add up all your expenses and fees (you will not get these back) from just refunding, and send the buyer the remainder. If they are crooked, I don't think they would push the issue and cause attention to themselves. You have time to decide this, do a little digging into their feedback page and shipping address.

OP1 year agoSee.. thats the thing, this guy has 1000+ Feedback and is on united states. california to be exact. I dont know if its a forwarder address though, how do i even check that?

·1 year ago....I'm sure the buyer would want a full refund, but since it was shipped and then they cancelled they wont be getting one. But most importantly, you want the phone back.
Question...did you ship it not using eBay shipping?

OP1 year agoI shipped it using ebay shipping, however ups did say I have a recall fee of 27$ as well.

·1 year agoIf you do a partial, the buyer may go to his cc for the rest of the purchase, and you will be charged another $20 for that privilege.

·1 year agoI can’t comment he is scammer, but certainly he should known his circumstances and if the need was immediate, he should have purchased locally. Mail, couriers take at minimum 3 day delivery at best.
As for deducting shipping, your call on it. Others will chime in on how to do it. If you want to.

·1 year agoThis is a known scam. Buyer buys expensive phone and asked it be shipped overnight or as soon as possible. Fortunately you sent it UPS Ground. Intercept it and be happy. This is no doctor. It is a scammer. I bet you when he contacted UPS he was trying to divert the phone with a phony claim of being a doctor needing the phone quickly to help in Texas. UPS rightly denied the request.

·1 year agoYou cannot charge a restocking fee and that is the least of your worries right now.
Hopefully you have signature confirmation on this shipment.
Without it you will lose the phone and the money paid.
You should try to recall this shipment.
Better to spend the money and get the phone back than to lose the phone too.

·1 year agoSelling iPhones...especially expensive ones can be problematic on eBay.
I be happy just to get the item back.
It's rather easy to buy an iPhone anywhere and physicians have money to buy a phone quickly in a store.
We want to believe all buyers are honest...but...

·1 year agoThe buyer isn't a physician, isn't going on a mission to help flood victims and is a scammer who waited to receive a tracking number showing movement.

Go to the order and report the buyer now (before the claim/chargeback) so it'll be on record. Explain that the buyer didn't ask to cancel until after receiving a tracking number and knew it was too late to cancel.
I sure hope you shipped that $1250 phone with online viewable signature confirmation.

·1 year agoYou should have just stated the item was already shipped, and that the buyer would then need to return it for the refund. Once you receive it back to you can issue a partial refund minus the shipping cost.
No one wants to hear what it cost you to sell or do, those are given, it cost money to sell, nor does anyone want to hear if you are happy or not happy. Returns, customer service, buyer's change of mind...good or bad...are all part of the selling experience.
For all sellers...the good things take care of themselves, the bad things you must deal with, and if it's too difficult to deal with, rethink selling. In this case, the buyer needs to return the phone to you, in the simpliest form it just gets returned to seller & you refund, relist, and sell again

OP1 year agoCan I actually do a partial refund? I was able to request to return to sender. So lets say I did get my item back, how do I go with it? Cancel order and give partial refund? What if the buyer didnt want partial refund, what do I do?

·1 year agoOnce you get it back, you can then cancel, but make sure you use "buyer requested" as the reason. I'd only issue a partial. Subtract the original shipping, signature confirmation charge, plus the recall charge.
Usually this scam works with the buyer asking you to ship overnight/expedited service so they get it before you have time to have it recalled.

OP1 year agoSo just so I know how this scam works and be knowledgeable on how to prevent it, how do they actually scam if the tracking shows its delivered? wouldnt that clear the item?

·1 year agoThey could file a claim that it's NAD (not as described) and when you accept the return, they send a box of rocks (or an envelope). Anything showing delivery back to you will earn them a refund.

Short answer: eBay doesn't allow restocking fees, so don't worry about that. However, I would try to recall the shipment. Good luck.

·1 year agoYou are not allowed to charge a restocking fee, the buyer must be fully refunded. Sounds like he wont even be there for the delivery, in that case, the pkg will be returned to you, then you can cancel the transaction at buyers request and refund. But if the funds are still pending, you cant refund from those, and Ebay will take the refund from your payment source, you will get it back when the funds clear. Or you can try to recall the pkg.
