Buyer unhappy that I cancelled transaction.
Summary: fgator described their experience with a buyer on eBay who purchased an item for $130. After realizing the item wasn't working, they offered a refund, but the buyer suggested a $30 discount instead. fgator decided to fix the item and relist it, prompting accusations of deceit from the buyer. Other participants discussed the seller's responsibility, with some suggesting they should have ensured the item was functional before listing it, while others offered solutions like offering a discount or free shipping to appease the buyer. The consensus highlighted that the situation could lead to negative feedback for the seller.
I just the other day had an item listed on EBAY and someone purchased it. The price $130, when I was preparing it for shipping, tested it and it did not come on. So I texted the person and told
him I would refund his money because of the issue. He then told me if I sold it to him for $30 less he would still take it.
My decision was that I would try and get it fixed myself and relist after it was fixed because it could be an issue as simple as fuse.
He then started to accuse me of cheating and lying, I have 100% positive feedback and been on EBAY close to 20 years.

·3 days agoWhen an issue arises on my end and my buyer is willing to work with me -- I take that out in a heartbeat. You have no guarantee you can fix it and make as much or more money next time. Plus to cancel you will earn an out of stock defect.

·3 days agoYour first mistake was listing something that didn't work. That's on you, not the buyer. The second mistake was not doing as the customer requested after you contacted them. I'm sorry to say that you can probably expect a red donut.
This too shall pass.

·3 days agoI do that twice a year, maybe more.
Discover something wrong with the item and either ship it, send explanation, then send refund.
OR
If the item is not usable and not repairable, I'll send an explanation. If I hear back, I can usually cancel and throw the item away.
If I don't hear back...I'll ship it, and then refund.
Take a little responsibility for you mistakes. That'll separate you from other sellers.
Lots of buyers don't take responsibility for their mistakes..I understand that.
BUT,we probably have no idea the amount of buyers that DO.
You never here from them.
Found a guy using one of my pics once. I asked him about it.
He said he bought that item from me and didn't need it. Figured he could sell it on eBay, and use my photo, instead of returning it....since it wasn't my fault.

·4 days agoThe buyer bought something from you that you were unable to provide.
Do you expect the buyer to be happy about that?
luckythewinner
·4 days ago · EditedOf course the buyer is upset.
You failed to provide the item you advertised.
100% on you and the buyer is 100% justified in being unhappy.
How well you served other buyers has no bearing on the fact that you failed to serve THIS buyer. This buyer should not be expected to be happy just because some of your other buyers in the past were happy.

OP4 days agoSo I guess i just should of sent a non working product to him. If I have to spend say $50 to repair it, I'm still gonna sell it for the same price. Right?

Wrong. You should make sure it is working BEFORE you list it for sale.

Did you literally text their phone number or did you send a message using Ebay messaging?

·4 days agoYou can tell him that you'll happily complete the sale if you can get it working, if he's willing to wait.
fgator
OP4 days agoI would of done that, but if I had to put say $50 into it, then tell him that much more.
He would of been enraged about that.
