Buyer started bank dispute claim on received item - what to do?
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice on a situation I haven’t encountered before.
A buyer purchased an item from me, received it successfully (tracking shows delivered), and then 14 days later opened a return request stating that they “don’t like the item.” I approved the return, even though I do not normally accept returns, and was ready to proceed with the refund once the item was returned.
However, instead of completing the return, the buyer filed a payment dispute through their bank (chargeback) the next day after I approved the return, claiming the item is not as described.
So currently:
The item was delivered
The return request was approved and is now closed by eBay due to the dispute
The buyer has not returned the item
A bank dispute is now open
It seems like the buyer may be trying to avoid paying for return shipping by going through their bank.
Has anyone dealt with a similar situation?
What are the chances of winning this type of dispute?
Is there anything specific I should include to strengthen my case?
Does eBay offer any seller protection in this scenario?
I appreciate any insights or advice.
Thanks 🙏

NAD's are hard for a seller to win.

·5 months agoAgreed. I don't want to be discouraging, and certainly provide your evidence unless it's better for your business to not spend the time trying to fight it, but sellers do not usually win NAD bank disputes.

This.
Keep it calm and professional.
And note that the buyer lost an eBay dispute.
Also in your Response, "I regret you are unhappy with your purchase, please return it for a refund" which I hope was part of your Response to the eBay Claim as well.
Note that the buyer who uses a "not liked/ buyer remorse" reason for a Claim is responsible for the return. The seller does not supply return shipping.

"And note that the buyer lost an eBay dispute. " - just wondering what do you mean by that? As I understood the ebay return request that i approved was closed because of the bank dispute.

·5 months agoYou get to respond to the claim which the bank of the buyer reads.
You are allowed up to about 1000 words I think in your response...the bank is reading it so makes it very businesslike and try to do the 1000+ words.
You must upload photo(s) for the response to go through.
I suggest doing a draft before you actually respond to the claim.
Photo(s) : tracking as delivered...and so on.
I suggest google 'disputes with a bank'...to really add some words into your response.
No matter how small the dispute I love a good fight...LOL.
Yes, I won a few disputes after my first one and didn't know anything about them.
But, don't do any appeal(s) after responding to the bank...that could cost another $20.00 for nothing.
eBay takes a step back and it's basically you and the buyer's bank...results will come from eBay as to a win or you lose.
I forgot how many photos you can upload...this is where it doesn't have to be so businesslike.
I uploaded a holiday theme Barbie and Ken that my wife does for every holiday of the month...had nothing to do with the dispute.
Good luck.
