Buyer Requesting Shipping Via UPS with "No Delivery Management Restrictions"? What is this??
I've got a repeat buyer who is in the process of moving. He's requesting I ship via UPS to his regular address, but ensure that "No Delivery Management Restrictions" are enabled, that way he can have the items re-routed to a UPS store for pickup if need be.
What exactly is this? Isn't this something UPS does automatically if the items cannot be delivered, similar to the US Postal Service. I've never seen anyone else mention this, or this option provided on purchasing a UPS label through eBay.
Specifically my buyer said this: "We can use the same old address. But it must be sent with no delivery management restrictions. The shipper places restrictions on the delivery preventing the recipient from changing the delivery etc. This is something I can do with my account or by calling customer service. Since I am moving / traveling I can have them reroute it to an office location for pick up. . When you ship just let them know you want you want the recipient to be able to have the package held for pick up or reroute to a different address if necessary . When you ship please let them know you want me to be able reroute or have it held for pick up. Please don't ship without this option. "
In short: How do I remove delivery management restrictions? And would I need to purchase a label outside eBay in order to do this, to ensure he can schedule a pickup from a UPS location if need be?

·2 years agoI think I know what the buyer means, they so not want you too tick the box for "no safe drop" which is an instruction to the delivery person to not just leave the package if there is nobody present to receive it. If you tick that box and nobody is there it would go back to the depot for pickup or the recipient can reschedule. For a lot of people that's difficult because they are not home during regular delivery hours.
When somebody does this to me I have to make a 30 minute drive through terrible traffic to get to the depot and It usually not available for pick up until the next day. When you do the pick up you have to provide ID that is match with the name on the package.
This causes the same inconvenience as when a seller uses Signature Required without informing the buyer in advance.

·2 years agoRepeat buyer or not they need to fix their address. If it's for the following item the buyer is also asking you to switch the carrier service, which was USPS Ground Advantage in the listing, to UPS. WAY too many red flags here.

·2 years agoGood point. In addition, USPS makes it easy for him to get his mail held or forwarded as needed. I would point him to his post office, and otherwise stick to your original shipping plans and carrier, unless he does request to cancel.

·2 years agoBologna. You ship to the address received with the payment, and nowhere else.
Tell him to provide the address of his UPS Store as the Ship-To: destination with his payment, and then he can collect it from there at his leisure.
I don't know whether his request for letting him redirect the shipment after it's on the way to him is even do-able (FedEx, for example, is not supposed to allow that at all for eBay shipments), but letting the buyer divert the shipment elsewhere opens you up to a scam Item Not Received dispute if tracking does not show a Delivered status to the City and ZIP of the Ship-To: address received with the payment.

OP2 years agoGotcha, thank you so much for the reply. This is what I was thinking, while I trust this buyer I don't like the idea of trying to "go around" what eBay has implemented. Nor do I want to risk scam.
At this point, I've already received payment for the items with his old shipping address. Would my best move be to cancel as buyer requested, and make him rebuy under a new shipment address?

·2 years agoYes, that would probably be best. You can actually use "Problem with buyer's address" instead, since they've told you it's not the address they want to receive it at. Probably won't matter, but I would think it's more accurate.

·2 years agoThat is against the rules unless you have an email from the buyer that requests a cancellation. Ebay is tightening up on sellers that abuse the cancellation system, so I caution you if you do this, you could have issues with Ebay. Will the catch you, IDK. Is it worth the risk?

·2 years agoWell, you can't make him rebuy with a new address, but you should run that option past him. More specifically, ask him flat-out if he would like to cancel the current shipment to his old address.
He may say Yes and then ghost you on paying again, but in that case it may be that you have dodged a bullet.

OP2 years agoSorry poor choice of words. He is a repeat buyer, he's bought several big packages from me so I'm trying not to inconvenience him. I'm fairly confident he will rebuy. I did end up sending him a message with the option to rebuy with the UPS store as shipment address or cancel and wait till his move is finished.

·2 years agoIn short: when you purchase a UPS or FedEx label through eBay, eBay applies restrictions that prevent delivery instructions like re-routing, hold for pickup, etc. I believe this is because there was too much fraud before these restrictions were applied.
Perhaps instead you should offer the buyer the option of USPS because with USPS the buyer will be able to apply mail forwarding or hold for pickup.
Another suggestion is for the buyer to wait and purchase after he's settled with a new address.

·2 years agoIIRC, there's a loss of seller protection if an item is forwarded and not delivered to the address shown on the payment. (I'm not sure whether ebay looks at it as they view freight forwarding but as a seller, I wouldn't ship to an address knowing that it will be forwarded to a different address.)
It's possible that if the buyer is moving to a place in the same zip code, the USPS forwarding order may not change seller protection since tracking will show delivery to the same zip but I'd be concerned.
ETA: I realize that sometimes forwarding is beyond seller control (as in the case of the buyer moving), but I think the seller still loses SP.

·2 years agoNo, the seller does not lose delivery protection if the package is forwarded following arrival at the original address. (It's not the same as shipping to a freight forwarder, because in that situation the freight forwarder is the original address, and any further travel would not be part of the original shipment with the original carrier.)
