buyer received invoice with different price
I sold an item for $200. The buyer is from Spain. The buyer got an invoice where the article price is $242 USD, instead of $200. Then shipping and tariff is added making the total a little over $286.
Why is the buyer being charged $242 for a $200 item? It the shipping and tariff is separate and not included in this price.

·2 years agoIt would include International shipping and VAT.
You will see this when in EIS. What you get paid for as the seller is the $200 plus US shipping to the Ebay processing facility, except if you offer free domestic shipping, then you would just get the $200.

OP2 years agoThat is really interesting. The buyer acted like it said $200 so I don't know what happened with him. I truly appreciate all the responses I got to this question, and now I know what to expect next time an international buyer purchases something. Thanks, y'all!

·3 years agoIf you look at your Order Details it should explain the amount the buyer paid and how it was distributed. In the example below the buyer paid Shipping and VAT (Value Added Tax) but they did not pay a Customs or Import Tax. The Customs or Import Tax will be decided once item is received in their country.

OP2 years agoThat's the thing, I didn't get any order details like that, because the buyer hadn't paid. But yes, it looks like he got charged VAT.. When I sold something to another international buyer, I did get details that showed the VAT after he paid. So this is only the second international buyer I've had under this new system. Really good to know. As it turned out, the buyer was not willing to pay what looks to be a 21% jump in price so we cancelled it. But now I know for future orders.

·2 years agoLikely buyer found the item thru the US Site but in order to pay for it they had to use the site they are registered with and then they see the increase. If they really did not understand this or if they were just trying to get the item VAT free, who knows?

OP2 years agoYeah, who knows. From the beginning he asked if I could fix this and sell for $200, but I explained what I found out in this forum about the VAT, and then he wanted to just cancel. That's fine.

·3 years agoDid the buyer send you a copy of the Invoice?
I have no doubt any confusion could be resolved in a few seconds just by looking at the Invoice.

OP2 years agoHe sent me the invoice but it didn't show anything other than that the price was $242, then shipping and tariff.

·3 years agoRather than charge tax/VAT on a line at the bottom, items sold in Europe contain the VAT price in with the item. Spain has a 21% VAT rate. $200x 21%= $42

·3 years ago@kitowa,
@pjcdn2005's explanation is exactly right.
Here's what the listing looks like on eBay.com, with your $200 price shown.
However, in the EU and UK, the purchase price or sticker price on an item for sale is supposed to include the VAT. It's never added on at the checkout or when an item is purchased. So, that's how your listing was shown on eBay Spain, as long as the shipping address is set for Spain:
