Buyer "Ordered by mistake and didn't know how to cancel" Scam?

Buyer buys a 900 dollar thing. I ship it out. The night before it is set to arrive, he/she starts a return saying,"Ordered by mistake and didn't know how to cancel"  He never tried to contact me by email or anything. It is too late for me to intercept it. Is this a scam?

Buyers can only request a cancellation, they can't actually cancel anything.  Only the seller can process a cancellation.

Sadly many buyers don't communicate well with their sellers, for whatever reason they may have.

Just process the return request.  Fighting it will ONLY hurt you and your stats.  Let them return it.

As inconceivable as it may sound, it may have indeed been ordered by accident.

I had a customer place an order on New Years Eve around 11:30pm via best offer.

The offer was accepted by me.

I later received an eBay message from the customer that they had ordered accidentally.

So, while the ball was dropping on New Year's Eve into New Years Day, I was carefully packaging an order only to find out when I went online (to submit final weight/dimensions of the box for a shipping label) that I was accepting an order cancel instead.

I'm fine with the cancellation. Guess I was lucky it happened before I shipped out.

Hard to be angry at the customer. Was thinking it was a    champagne    motivated user error.

Hi @golfwrxbarrysanders . As @kensgiftshop said, accept the return and wait to see if they ship anything back.

Going forward you do need sig conf when total (item+ship+tax) hits that $750 mark, so you lucked out the buyer filed a return request which means they can no longer file a non-receipt claim through eBay.

You have 30 day returns so just tell them to open a return. (maybe they won't?).

    No sig? Ouch!

Always require a signature on and shipment over $750.

    From the eBay help pages

Seller – When should I purchase signature confirmation in order to be protected against an item not received case or a payment dispute?

If the order has a total cost (including shipping costs and any taxes) of $750 or more, you're required to purchase signature confirmation to be protected if a buyer reports an item not received or opens a payment dispute.

No signature. I'm thinking there is a 20% chance he sends back something else in the box

    Oh jeez...

Okay - tell him to mark it as Return to Sender and hand it back to the post office unopened. If he is honest he will do that. Tell him you will refund as soon as it is received back at your place. Do not make any mention of having him file a claim.

On the bright side - failing to add Signature Confirmation to a package over $750 is only critical if he is filing an Item Not Received claim and so far he has not done so. It does not look like he would as he is not disputing the (impending) delivery.

Even if they do accept the package they can claim INR and win because you are required to put signature when $750+

Signature required is so cheap for some seller protection / insurance and yet, so many won't use it.

No signature! What does your buyers' profile look like? Did you check all their feedback and Google map / satellite their address?

Note: I see they say that they don't know how to cancel. That can be a game play. I would not do anything until they open a return case. They might be one who has abused the system and cannot open a case / claim.

I could not afford selling something of that high value and shipping it. Pick-up only and pay then after buyers' inspection an approval.

I don't see you getting the set back and if you do, there will probably be a couple pieces missing. I hope I'm wrong. Please keep us updated.

eBay only goes by tracking number on returns. They do not give the seller the return tracking number so they can track. There is not weight and dims information. This is the reason we all see so many sellers post about they never received the item back, but eBay says tracking shows delivered, case closed, and buyer has been refunded.

No signature means he can keep it, file an item not received, and you'll lose the case (because there's no signature, you need that on $750 or more).

You just lost an Item Not Received claim.

    PYA.

Send a Return Shipping Label immediately.

Tell the buyer to attach the RSL and return the shipment for a full refund.

And that he doesn't even need to open the box. Just tape on the label and hand it back to the carrier.

    Don't try to get cute.

I would try to get them to “return to sender”…. Then the ball is in your playing field.

this happens occasionally....it still boggles my mind how on ebay you can start a return before you even receive the item..... You should be able to request a cancellation up until it is shipped and then you should not be able to return until you actually get the item.

Dear Buyer, This item was shipped out a few days ago. It's too late for me to cancel or stop the shipment.
When it arrives to you, just return it to:

No way to know in advance if this is a scam (although it sound fishy to me).    Since it is too late to intercept package...customer can try to "refuse delivery" or "open case" and return item for refund.

If customer opens "not as described" case (you will be forced to refund (purchase price + shipping BOTH ways).   Some customers use this method as a way to get "free stuff"  (hoping Seller doesn't want to pay for return shipping).
