Buyer disputed charge with CC company...the very odd outcome...
So, I sold an Eddie Bauer down parka to a buyer a few months ago. A day or 2 after he received it, eBay notifies me that he filed a dispute with his credit card company, saying he did not recognize the charge. Well, he filed it after he received the item, so I felt safe, and eBay said I'm covered under Seller Protection. Whatever, I'm not losing sleep over it. But, a week or so goes by and the buyer leaves me GLOWING positive feedback! I figure, OK, so eBay will close the CC dispute, everyone is happy, right? Weeellllll....I guess not!😂 I just watched my feedback drop by a point, and I thought somebody negged me. Lo and behold, the above buyer's feedback was removed because his CC company found in his favor! EBay just closed the case (no funds removed from my account) for that reason! Um, I guess the banks and eBay don't care enough about these small scams (under $100), as the GLOWING positive feedback indicates that he did indeed recognize the charge! I tell ya, it's a new thrill every day! Well, off to block a buyer....😂

·2 years agoI didn’t read any of the replies yet, but your ordeal is more common than you think. It’s the most used reason of all the payment disputes I get. Here’s an explanation of what likely happened. Buyer bought the jacket from you and received it and is happy, that’s why he left you a positive feedback. In his CC statement the line item shown for his purchase with you is very confusing and misleading. It might have some confusing words, a phone number, possibly your user or store name (many buyers don’t even know the sellers they buy from and think it all just comes from “ebayâ€). So that’s why your buyer doesn’t recognize the charge, because of the confusing line item description on their statement. So they file a chargeback.
ebay covers you for this since you did your doodie 💩. 9/10 times the payment source sides with the buyer, which happened in your case. Your seller protection kicked in and eBay covered your funds, and likely removed the buyer’s ability to leave you feedback for this protection. It doesn’t matter if the feedback is positive or negative, it’s thorough enough to just not allow feedback altogether.

Regarding the positive feedback that was removed:
Is the buyer a 0-feedback newbie? And is the buyer now NARU?
Ebay will remove feedback left by newbies if the member is suspended within the first (ETA: correction) 90 days from membership.

OP2 years agoNo, that's what gets me! 1099 feedback, member since Feb. 2002! But the feedback is gone from MY side, his shows the Positive feedback I left him!

·2 years agoThe unrecognized charge CC chargeback is one of the easiest ones to win as long as the tracking is uploaded to the CC and it shows the item was delivered to the registered users address and name on file with ebay and credit card. So, why did you not win the chargeback?

I don't see the odd part.

·2 years agoI've never heard of a positive feedback being removed by ebay because a dispute was won by the buyer.
Your feedback numbers can change though as ones that are a year old roll off.
Is this feedback from the past six months for a different Eddie Bauer down coat?
suavepenguin
OP2 years agoNo, not that one. This one:
Columbia Omni-Tech Interchange Jacket Men's XXL Gray Omni-Heat Hooded 3 In 1 EUC
Item ID: 196179517466
I erred. It was Columbia, not Eddie Bauer.

·2 years agoWhy do you say Ebay doesn't care?
They cared enough to cover the dispute for you.

·2 years agoI wish ebay's description that they send to c.c. companies had a bit more description/transparency than just a non-descript number. Even if they used the item number, that would help!
I understand why buyers claim not to recognize transactions when they look like this:

·2 years agoAgreed.
I'm a seller here and I still sometimes get a little jolt when I look at my outgoings because I honestly have to think wth that could be for.
I don't see why ebay can't at least add the item # to the deduction. At least with Paypal it showed the seller name.
iamalwaysright
·2 years agoBut that would make too much sense.

·2 years agoRecognized that they got the item, but could not associate (recognize) the charge with the item received.
Yup, my last one made a new "buddy" for me as well ðŸ˜

eBay does not close disputes based on feedback. And even if they did, eBay cannot close a dispute that was opened with a credit card company.
Lo and behold, the above buyer's feedback was removed because his CC company found in his favor! EBay just closed the case (no funds removed from my account) for that reason!
No funds were removed from your accounts because eBay told you that you were protected in the event that you lost.
I guess the banks and eBay don't care enough about these small scams (under $100)
Why are you saying eBay does not care? They do not control the outcome of credit card disputes, and they cannot magically reverse the credit card company's decision. But it seems like they cared enough about you as a seller to protect you from financial losses.
You seem to be implying that the buyer's credit card company should make decisions on disputes based on meaningless, optional feedback housed in some unrelated computer system managed by the party who stands to benefit from having the dispute denied.

OP2 years agoNo, I'm implying that eBay doesn't care to utilize the simple proof they can supply to the bank/CC company to indicate that the buyer did willingly use their credit card to make a purchase, thereby saving themselves the loss of the legitimate charge. But, carry on and continue dissecting....

·2 years agoeBay might be a 40 Billion Dollar company but even they have absolutely no power over banks and credit card companies. The only thing they can to is to pay out of THEIR pocket so that you don't have to.
FYI - There is no "simple proof" in any card not present credit card transaction, there is almost no way for eBay to win this type of chargeback, the best they can do is to take the hit.

·2 years agoI don't see how feedback is proof. I get FB for other sellers' items all the time.

·2 years agoFrom what I understand, you have to provide the information so Ebay can give it to the credit card company.
You could have provided the tracking number showing it was delivered to their address, and the buyer would have lost.

·2 years agoEbay Has The tracking information on record that OP was covered . When Ebay Jumped the shark into Managed Payments , The Credit card company's and banks Has eBay as the Merchant of record in the dispute process . And eBay is slow to get sellers response during the dispute process . In OP's Case Ebay failed to provide the Tracking because they don't what to fight Charge backs . which they have a long history not fighting charge backs going back years. That I have seen first hand on both seller & the old Power seller boards since 1996 with my other ID .
