Buyer complaints that the polymailer arrived dirty
Hello!
I need an advice, please.
My buyer refused to open the package because it arrived dirty. The brandnew polymailer that was used for shipping arrived dirty. She doesn't want to open the package.
Fortunately, I put the item in a plastic bag and then in the polymailer. I don't know if "dirt" that is on the polymailer got on the item, because she doesn't want to open the package.
I was super confused. So, I said maybe she can go back to post office and refused the package or mail the package back to me for a refund.
Also, there is a note from a postmaster to her. I am not able to read the note, but I think the note might be explaining the stains.

·1 year agoIt's got cooties? I few years back a seller shipped me four gallons of maple syrup in poorly packed box. It broke open in shipping and poured out. There was some gooey mail that day.

·1 year agoYou win for weird buyer of the week @opiumansia . I can't believe your buyer wouldn't open it. Put on a pair of gloves, man, wipe it down with a wet paper towel, then tear it open. what's the big deal? You said the item inside was packed in plastic so it's very likely unaffected by the outside spill. 🙄

OP1 year agoI definitely found it weird, but she kinda apologized and said that she just can't make herself open the package as it looks too gross to her. I decided not to advice her to use disposable gloves as she is an adult woman and surely she knows that using gloves would be the best option. She obviously doesn't want to do it.
We agreed on opening a return case with a reason Arrived Damaged, and I issued her a return label, which I paid for. Once I receive the item, I will be disputing the return label charge with USPS/ebay🤔. However, if the item is damaged/stained, I will file an insurance claim with USPS.

·1 year agoIf it makes you feel any better, at work I got a letter delivered to me (in a Canada Post baggie with a note) that was covered in BLOOD. I am not kidding, it was like a severe cut that got all over the envelope. It was gross, and because there is legislation regarding the mail we send and receive, I had to open it, handle it, and scan this disgusting piece of mail into the file it goes into (the file handler never touches the envelope). I made a copy of the envelope so I could dispose of the original (otherwise it gets handled weeks later when we do shredding).
We have gloves on hand since COVID (some people did not want to handle licked envelopes without gloves), your buyer could use some dish gloves to open it if they wanted the item. They can always return the item if it's damaged. (Or you could simply refund if you don't want it back).

·1 year agoI would open it, no problem. Good grief, wear gloves if it's so bad.
But, dealing with the public you're going to get all kinds. If you haven't, you can always let your buyer know that the item is itself enclosed in a plastic bag, so should be fine.

·1 year agoScissors and Tongs if you REALLY want the item. If you like 'lending' your money out for free, waiting a total of 2-3 weeks since you paid, then 'return' it.
I would NOT let this stop me from opening my package.

OP1 year agoHonestly, it would not stop me either. I have received many soiled packages, sometimes torn packages taped back by the post office. It never occurred to me that I should complaint to the seller about it. However, the items inside were never damaged.
That is why I decided to seek other people's opinion. I wasn't sure if it is a legit complaint or something made up in order to twist the refund/return rules.
Anyhow, the buyer disappeared from the radar. Whatever they will decide to do, I will go along with it.
Thank you so much for all of your opinions! It really matters to me. Two heads are better than one.

·1 year agoFor what it's worth, I think this is what the note says. I found this text online, and it matches what I can read in the picture.

·1 year agoIt's some oily, smelly substance. I just got an item in the last week, looking the same. Same "oops we're sorry) clear poly. Can't blame the buyer for not wanting it. If it seeped in the package, it's not what the buyer bargained for. Have them make a return for damaged during shipping. Because it was, USPS said it was. You have the photo evidence of it.

·1 year agoI would not open it either.
I would send the buyer a prepaid label and agree to refund on return, or if the item is inexpensive, refund without return.
Actually, I would not want it back and would just refund.
