Buyer claims they received "merchant verfication" AFTER completing transaction
Summary: nicolhamilto73 shared a concern about receiving a suspicious message from a buyer, which included a QR code for "merchant verification." Other participants, including mam98031, albertabrightalberta, and eburtonlab, advised that it appears to be a scam and recommended reporting it through eBay's messaging system. They emphasized not using any unfamiliar QR codes and suggested blocking the suspicious buyer. The discussion highlighted caution against potential attempts to gather account credentials or financial information.
Scam??
A buyer messaged me with a "we're verifying the merchant" screenshot. The screenshot has a QR code that says "Share with merchant for verification". It seems odd to me. I did not use the QR code just in case and haven't found any writings within eBay about this. Has anyone seen this before?
Thanks!

·2 weeks agoScam; you have not actually sold the shoes as I can still see the listing. Most likely the QR code would have led you to a fake website claiming that the buyer has paid but you need to ship before the payment will be released to you, or something like that.
Unfortunately as a new seller with a big-ticket, highly-scammed item, you are a magnet for scammers. You might want to consider selling those locally for cash instead.

I don't see a completed/sold listing so I assume your "buyer" hasn't paid yet. (Or rather, I hope they aren't a buyer yet!)
Based on the item you're selling, $700 sneakers, I'm guessing that the buyer was trying to scam you by getting your information outside ebay.
My opinion is that they should be blocked!
ETA: Note that you should NOT send any text, contact information or payment info through texts. All correspondence should come through ebay and your listing.

·2 weeks agoThat sounds like a scam. Never follow any blind links or use any QR codes sent by someone you do not know. Likely it leads to a phony page that will prompt you for account credentials or financial info; if you provide any info, it goes right to the scammer.
eBay does not send such messages to buyers or ask buyers to share QR codes with sellers other than as proof of delivery for a local pickup.

I don't think it's legit.

·2 weeks agoI have never heard of this before and I've been here a very long time.
If this came to you through Ebay messages, go back to that message and then in the upper right corner is a drop down menu. Select REPORT this message as it is highly likely it is a Scam attempt.
Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.
