Buyer Changed Dispute Reason
This one is new to me. I’ve been a fairly casual seller on here since 2013, but I’ve had a good track record thus far. I’ve never had a dispute opened on something I’ve sold until now. I sold an item about a month ago; shows delivered and received positive feedback. Fast forward to this week, I received a dispute for “Buyer does not recognize transaction.†I was protected by Seller Protection under this dispute, I thought everything was fine. Now the buyer has changed the dispute to the dreaded “item not as described†reasoning. This is the first I’ve heard of anything being wrong with the item I sold. I reached out to the buyer to try to understand why they want to return the item. I have not heard back from the buyer. I believe there is something nefarious going on here, so I reported the buyer. Before I knew any better about these INAD cases, I declined the return. From what I’ve been researching, it sounds like I’m going to be out my $150 and the buyer will now get to keep my item?
Does anyone have any experience with a scenario like this?

probably nothing nefarious here. More likely ran out of money and needs to pay bills before something gets turned off. So his only option is to try and return stuff.

OP2 years agoThank you for the advice everyone. You have helped me realize that this is a dispute with the payment institution and not eBay directly. Had I had known better at the time, I would not have challenged the dispute and just refunded the buyer to get my item back. Live and learn.

·2 years agoAdam, it was approx. 2015, when e-Bay was using PayPal, I received a dispute concerning a person not recognizing a purchase. PP contacted me, I submitted the delivery info and the case was closed in my favor. I have not, though, been challenged by a bank.
A related comment: Were the option to become available, I would return to PP without the slightest hesitation.
@kabilab
If you read the post, the dispute was changed to NOT AS DESCRIBED.

·2 years agoDiva, you are, of course, correct. I read the initial post, but my mind drifted along the "not recognized track."
Thank you.

·2 years agoWhen they go to their payment source, you don't get the item back, especially when you don't accept returns.

OP2 years agoHow do you combat this then? The buyer never reached out to me to see if I would honor a return, they went straight to filing a dispute. Can anyone just go create a dispute with their payment institution and get free items? Is it because I marked my listing as “returns not accepted?†Just trying to understand.

·2 years agoEBAY 30-Day MONEY BACK GUARANTEE (supersedes your "no returns policy") allows customer to return item by claiming "not as described, counterfeit, defective, missing parts" (you will be forced to refund purchase price + shipping BOTH ways). EBAY does NOT require customer to prove their claims. EBAY always rules in favor of the customer.
Customers also have 6-months to attempt to "reverse payment" with credit card company. That is what your customer tried when they claim "do not recognize this transaction".
Better to "allow returns" that way if customer opens "buyer remorse/changed their mind" case you only have to refund "purchase price". Customer pays all shipping.

After rereading your post. And as @lacemaker3 pointed out. This sounds more like a dispute through a credit card company aka financial institution.
When you contest those you are charged an additional $20 when you lose. Not many sellers have ever won a NAD chargeback dispute.
I have never had one of those, so I'm not too sure how you would proceed.

To b able to advise you, we need to know if these are eBay disputes (as the previous responders have assumed) or credit card disputes/chargebacks.
I suspect they are chargebacks, because eBay doesn't have a dispute for "doesn't recognize the transaction" as far as I know. Please confirm, either way.

·2 years agoI have not, but my strong advice would be to never, ever reach out unilaterally to a buyer to ask questions. You never know what the buyer is thinking. If they even are thinking.
As @ebooksdiva notes, simply accept the return and proceed from there.
Please let us know what transpires. I've not read about this sort of issue before and would be interested to know how it resolves.
Hopefully you get your item back and be able to relist.
There is no way possible that you can decline a return for Not as described. The only returns you can decline are remorse returns and only if you don't accept returns.
That being said your only option is to accept the return, issue the return label, receive the item back and refund. You can always relist the item.
If you or the buyer asked eBay to step in, yes you would lose both the money and the item as well as receiving a defect for cases closed without a seller resolution.
