I have a signed Riddell mini helmet to sell. The box has a silver NFL sticker with a number. Is this a type of authorization? If not, what is the best strategy for authenticating an item?

·7 months agoThat NFL sticker proves that it is Authentic NFL merchandise, It does not give you any proof of an Authentic autograph.

·7 months agoThere are very few football players out there in which the cost to authenticate their signature on a mini-helmet will actually make the helmet more valuable than it is without the authentication.
When I worked at the baseball card store we had cheaper authentication prices than you could ever dream of (negotiated rate because of customer submissions through us), and we almost never authenticated or graded anything that the store owned. It just wasn't worth it. The exceptions tended to be presidential signatures and signatures of people like Mickey Mantle.
In some cases the authentication made things worse, we had a Yankees team ball from 1961 or 1962 that basically the entire team signed. The authentication came back that every signature was real, except Mickey Mantle, that was a clubhouse signature. The ball would have been better without the authentication.

·7 months agoThe hologram, I think that is what you are referring to, just shows the item as a authorized NFL item, not the signature. However, based on a recent raid of sport memorabilia, these items have often been faked when sold with fake autographs.
Authenticating the autograph is an entirely different thing all together...and from my standpoint, any autograph is fake unless you have provenance. Meaning, if you have a sig on a helmet, I want a picture of the person singing that helmet. Auto pens are too good today

·7 months agoI really doubt especially if you have original packaging to worry about authentic issues. These mini helmets are sold everywhere.

For fee you can send the autographed mini helmet to PSA/DNA, Beckett (recently bought out by PSA), CGC, or JSA for authentication. They will send it back to you with a hologram and letter of authenticity with certification number on it.
The fee is based on the value of the autograph. The more valuable the autograph the higher the fee.

I believe the only autograph authentication companies Ebay accepts are PSA/DNA, Beckett, JSA, Fanatics, Upper Deck Authenticated, CGC, and Steiner Sports.
