Authenticity Guarantee return lost after delivery to outdated return address - who is responsible?

I recently sold a pair of Adidas shoes for $110 that went through eBay's Authenticity Guarantee. The authentication center determined they were "unable to confirm authenticity," so the sale was canceled and the shoes were returned to me. Unfortunately, the return shipment was sent to my old registration address instead of my current return address. eBay explained that my registration address had not been updated before the buyer completed payment, so that's the address the authentication center used.
The package was shipped by OnTrac/LaserShip to the address of my former USPS Post Office (my old PO Box location). According to the delivery photo, the package was left outside the building. I never received it.
I immediately opened an investigation with OnTrac, but they closed it and told me to contact the shipper.
I then contacted eBay Authenticity Guarantee. Their response was that:
The shoes were returned to the registration address on file.
Because I voluntarily refunded the buyer, they consider the transaction resolved.
They will not open a claim with OnTrac and advised me to work with the carrier.
My concern isn't really about which address was used anymore. My concern is that I never got my property back after it left the authentication center.
Has anyone experienced something similar?

Previous owner of my house does it all the time when I get her mail. I just give it to her.

·1 month agoI think we need to have all our addresses up to date, and it's our responsibility to see that that is done.
The return address is used for when we issue a return label to a buyer, a return to sender address is the shipped from address, a return from authentication is the registered address with eBay. Was the "shipped from" address on the label you used to send to the authenticator the old one or the updated one?

Again according to the OP, eBay for some reason pulled up his out-of-date registered address instead and sent the package there. I'd say blame falls on both sides here: the OP for not keeping his registered address current (on the off-chance that someone at eBay might need to contact him there; however, it's not intended for sale returns), and the eBay authentication center for ignoring his Return address and using the registered account address for the return instead.

·1 month agoWrong in what way? I pointed out that a Return address can be different from a Registration address. The OP is stating that eBay used the Registration address instead of the Return address. He also stated that his Return address was up to date, but his Registration address was not.

You can store multiple addresses for multiple purposes in your Account tab at https://accountsettings.ebay.com/uas/addresses, including the Return address section, identified by eBay as the location to which items can be returned. Your chosen Return address is what appears in the upper left of your Shipping label, adjacent to the ZIP Code stored in your "Ship from address" section.
The OP is claiming that eBay used his Registration address instead of his Return address when sending the item back to him. His Registration address was out of date but was not intended as the destination for returns anyway. He was wrong to not maintain a current Registration address; eBay was wrong to send his package there.

·1 month agoYou should be concerned about which address was used because that is what caused the problem. You didn't get your property back after it left the authentication center because you had not updated your address with eBay and they returned the package to the address you had on file. Nobody knows where you live or where you get your mail or if you move or if you don't move and it is your responsibility to keep your information updated with eBay. This is not eBay's nor the authentication center's fault.
I also don't understand about leaving OnTrak/LaserShip leaving your package outside the post office building. That doesn't make sense. I'm not familiar with this OnTrak but even if it was after hours when the PO was closed, it seems strange that they would just leave a box on the PO building steps.
You said "they" will not open a claim with OnTrak and I assume you mean eBay. This is correct. eBay won't do your legwork for you and open a claim with the carrier. YOU need to contact OnTrak and file a claim with them but I would be surprised if they do anything because their delivery person delivered the package to the address it was addressed to.

OP1 month ago · EditedIn this case, they didn't leave it with the post office employees or in my box. It's similar to the case that it has been misdelivered. In that case, wouldn't the shipper be the one to have to contact the carrier? In other words, it's like they delivered it to an apartment complex but not the exact apartment number.

·1 month agoTHe shipping label return address is used for the post office to return to sender.
Ebay uses the return shipping address when having to buy a label to send the item back to the seller.
You have a registration address AND a return shipping address that you filed on your eBay account. Ebay would not use your registration address for a return.

OP1 month agoWell, there is something called a return address on the shipping label. If the shipping company had given it to the postal worker, I could still retrieve it but they left it outside the building.

·1 month agoAs a Hail Mary pass....can you contact your old post office? If it is a smaller post office sometimes packages can linger.
Otherwise, not much you can do at this point. It was good that you refunded the customer on your own as if you did not, ebay would have taken it from you anyway.

OP1 month agoYes, when I went to go see if the package was still there, they were closed. When I called the next day no picked up.

it is both buyers and sellers responsibility to have their current address on file should anything, such as your situation, occur
i don't understand how the pgk was left outside a building if your old address was a USPS PO box

·1 month agoeBay has refunded you to make you whole again, therefore the item is now theirs. They can dispose of it, resell it, or whatever, which may not include a return to you.
