Auction is live and someone has messaged me with a crazy over the top buy it now offer
I’m curious how others handle this. I listed a piece of Pyrex it is a rare piece and very little info is available. It got multiple offers right away and now has bids. I received a crazy offer last night for buy it now. It seems that I can’t accept a best offer anymore. I guess I would have to end and repost? It doesn’t seem like the ethical thing to do has anyone run into this?

·1 year agoYes! My daughter and I have been following it and hoped we'd get a bit of an update on the backstory. My daughter did find the pattern in a Pyrex page and it was under Prototypes and Promotional Items so I'm guessing it has a really really interesting story to tell.

·1 year agoI have found that I pay out very little in PL fees, but that when I have PL on some listings (I only go for the 2% minimum) that I get more Views on everything and therefore more Sales.
Since I only pay the PL fee when something sells, it's cheap advertising for my Stores.
YMMV.
I also tend to use PL more often on 'deadstock' than on new listings. But all my Stores sell OOAK (sort of) items so I'm not really competing with 50 other sellers with identical merch.

I’ve been watching since you posted this thread.
I’ve been on eBay since its birth, and have seen many items (including a couple of my own) that started out low and sold for surprising high prices. Honestly, I really thought the days of “well attended†auctions on eBay were done — but I was wrong, and this proves it.
Question, if you will… Did you promote your listing anywhere? Either on eBay through promoted listings, or off, on other social media, to enhance visibility? Or was it totally just left to people finding it on their own?

·1 year ago@jrho2561 In a case like this, it's typically not necessary, as the collector's are always on top of the new listings. PL's are best for when you have a lot of competition. You likely had no competition for this. That said, I'm sure it didn't hurt anything, except your wallet LOL.

I’m very excited that it is going to a true collector who has been looking for this for a long time. I will pack it as he suggested and fingers crossed it will get to him in one piece!

·1 year agoWell.... 4 pieces, but 4 whole intact pieces. 🤣 I'm so glad the buyer is a genuine enthusiast and that you established quick communication and letting him have a role beyond paying the money. Hopefully this also means he will give you great feedback. It's a good look when high rollers praise you; then people see you're a safe investment as a seller. For some reason the vast majority of my biggest-ticket item buyers just never left any feedback; I even posted about it here once, and several other sellers had the same experience. Guess rich people are just too busy to think about such things, I dunno LOL.
Anyway, this has been one of the funnest threads to follow, ever. Thanks so much for sharing the real-time story!!

·1 year agoLOL I like that idea. I just hope the buyer didn't have that ignorant expectation that so many seem to have, to write big ALL-CAPS commands all over the package, about how postal workers should handle it. At best it does no good because machines do most of the handling anyway, and at worst a stressed out worker with anger management problems will drop-kick it out of spite. I learned from USPS insiders during my time shipping live fish, the "nothing to see here" approach is best; a plain box with nothing but a machine-printed shipping label moves fastest and safest.

·1 year agoI was watching the auction too! I sent a link to my friend who buys and sells Pyrex and she watched it go sky high at the last second. Amazing!
Funny thing happened while watching--I had the auction on my screen with the countdown. We were sitting on the couch, watching TV. My screen went dark and when I touched it, the price jumped to $5200. I freaked out, thinking I had placed a bid when I touched the screen! It then showed as sold and I quickly checked my purchase history to make sure I didn't do a dumb thing. The seller wouldn't have believed me!

....................comes the inevitable:
Every (almost every) vintage seller West of the Pecos that sells Pyrex/Corningware that really doesn't know what they have....
.............will now, hence and forthwith en masse elevated their vintage Pyrex from appropriate $20-60 sums to absurd Thousands of dollars price tags.
I would not be in the market for a plain old casserole dish until the "glow" dissipates a wee bit. 😉

·1 year ago@pls-consignments As I posted & the OP answered that she knows, UPS is VERY hit & miss. I just had occasion to use them for the first time multiple times & since it was being sent to my sis, we knew how we expected the items to be packed & how they were packed. They did a HORRENDOUS job! It was just teenagers working there which already made me suspicious. The whole reason I went there was b/c I expected every breakable, of which there were many, to be packed individually. Not even ONE of them was. A monkey could have done a better job! Honestly I paid an extra $40-$60 3 times for an absolutely worthless packing job. I wouldn't have paid a penny for it. All they did was wrap a bit of bubble wrap around the outside of everything I dropped off. Never again!
I would urge you to reconsider reccomending them. I'm sure there are some good ones, but I would have done a 1000% better job with a blindfold & 1 hand tied behind my back. Several other comments have said the same.

·1 year agoWell, it's unfortunate that you had such an awful experience. I have used them twice here in central Wisconsin to ship art, both times they did a good job. In fact, one of the buyers complained of "packing overkill". Yet, if your experience was different, then I would be concerned about consistency. Thank you for sharing.

·1 year agoNo, there wasn't any damage, no thanks to the horrid packing job, but it worked out ok. But I would never use them again just b/c it was costly & they did such a bad job. I specifically was trying to save the time of doing it all myself, but knowing what I know now, I wouldn't do it again. That said, as @pls-consignments said, they've had great luck, so I think it depends on the franchise.

·1 year agoNo, not all UPS Stores pack safely. I had them pack a very expensive cookie jar and it arrived broken. The buyer showed me the packaging job and no wonder it broke. And the $100 indemnity did not pay due to insufficient packing material.

Agree 100% with @simply-the-best-for-you re: even thinking about using the UPS store to pack this.
They are franchisees. They are often times no more expert at packing then the boy next door.
Not saying @jrho2561 you were considering this option, but since it's gotten hot, a lot of people have chimed in with their nickels worth.
You know you won't sleep unless you pack this 1000% your way and by you.
I could only say in every way that you handle this transaction, be consistent & true to that still small voice inside of YOU (not me or anyone else!).
Just as you instinctively avoided unethical & deceptive plies against you early on (that was the genesis of this thread).
This is your baby, and you have to live with it. All of it.
Follow YOUR mind and heart every step of the process. Listen to advice, then do what YOU know is right.

OP1 year agoI agree my plan is to packet it myself extremely carefully and well. I will reach out to the winner and anxiously wait from them to recieve it. I do hope this goes to someone will truly appreciate it and is collector, I think that is the only person who would pay so much. I feel like I saved a rare treasure and I think it’s pretty cool. I do appreciate everyone’s comments and advice

What an exciting ending -- TWO snipers, neither of whom had placed any earlier bids! I'd love to know whether one of them was the member who made that offer, and of course whether the winning bid was above or below the offer.
Anyway, congratulations on this great find, and I hope that this transaction has a happy ending.

·1 year agoThis question came up previously, not sure. Best guess is that the field is delayed in updating, but I'm curious, so let's see if @kyle@ebay or @devon@ebay can give us some idea? I didn't count them all, but there are very clearly more than 2. Someone else brought up earlier that maybe a couple belong to the same person, but it seems unlikely that 8 different bidders are only 2 people.

·1 year agoYes it was me. - I just did some looking around and it appears to be a system-wide glitch. All the auctions I found with multiple bidders said at the top that they had only 2. Note for @kyle@ebay & @devon@ebay .

I have to do vintage pyrex...and that shows up.
Just to let you know...I think maybe not putting vintage in the title it would show up in the bigger pyrex listings
and more buyers might see it.
Most experts will know it is vintage without using the word vintage.

·1 year agoToo late to end it...eBay would charge you for a fee for the highest bid even if it's cancel.
Let it ride...buyer won't probably buy it anyway and then you can cancel it.
You will have to watch the bids very closely...
We don't know if it's a bidder with multiple accounts or friends bidding on it.
Retractions of buyer's bids from a few bidders can make the winning bid lower.
And buyers have done retractions as late as they can.
Imagine the buyer paying for it and then doing a dispute with their credit card after it's shipped.
Or if a buyer has a broken one and replaces yours with theirs and wants to return it as it was broken in shipping.
I am putting it on my watch list...to see what happens...to see if I need to go looking for these at Goodwill Stores.

·1 year agoWell, even if it's damaged or chargebacked, chances are good OP is only out a few bucks, since it was a thrift find. There's no reason to think there's anything odd here, this is all quite typical for rare Pyrex.

·1 year agoI see a lot of good advice about getting this fragile 4-piece set to the buyer safely; I still say cut-able egg crate foam from a fabric store (usually at the back wall with the upholstery fabrics) would be a wise investment, and yes double-boxing too.
I'm curious what everyone thinks about buying the insurance that eBay offers at label checkout. I know I've seen some strong opinions about that both ways in past threads, LOL.
But here's something I think needs to be brought up, unpleasant as it is. There is always the chance that the auction winner is a real toad with plans to pull a scam, claiming some-or-all the pieces arrived shattered. This could be done easily enough with eBay's MBG, requiring only a photo of shattered glass (or dead ducks on a boat, as some may recall). If they wanted to be more convincing they might even go out and find some white/yellow transfer glassware and bust it up enough to make it impossible to tell if it's these same pieces, or I don't know, do some photoshopping. The OP could require the broken glass to be returned for inspection, but even if certain it was not same pieces, there's no guarantee an eBay employee could be convinced.
And then there's the buyer's credit card company to consider.
To be clear, I really don't think a Pyrex enthusiast is anywhere near as likely to be a scammer as a buyer of some other categories, nor do I think a 'generic' scammer would be educated enough on Pyrex to bid on rare pieces for the purpose of scamming. I'm just saying it's a non-zero possibility. In fact now that I think about it, it would probably be more likely that an extreme Pyrex enthusiast might inspect the pieces so obsessively that they "see" surface chips that aren't actually there, LOL. I mean don't tase me bro, but in my opinion it takes not only wealth but a little bit of neurosis to even want to pay THIS much for old bakeware in the first place.
So for the TLDR of this reply: @jrho2561 In addition to packing like for a newborn baby and (probably, IMO) buying insurance for this package, I would highly advise that you decide exactly which of these precautions you'll take before the end of the auction. And immediately after it closes, write to the winner, to congratulate them on the win and inform them how well you intend to pack/ship their precious baby, then ask them if there is anything else they'd like you to do. Usually I am 100% against the idea of buyers telling sellers how to do their job, but in a rare instance like this, I think it would not hurt to let the buyer feel like they can have a role in safe delivery, if they want it. If nothing else, you want to open communication with this person just in case they are scam-inclined or a perfectionist to the neurotic level of hallucination. What you want is to humanize yourself to the point where guilt might stop them from scamming, and show willingness to please that will instill the surety that they WILL be pleased. Am I making sense?

As long as I've been buying and selling Pyrex I too have never seen this pattern in the wild. But if you look on Pinterest several folks have the golden sunflower pinned. Looks like it came in Turquoise as well.
My Pyrex books are out in my she shed but the wind's are relentless and I can't make it out there to grab them.
You know Pyrex has begun reproducing old patterns now especially the 1960s, bolo.
I just hope that a couple of 🤡 clowns aren't playing with the OPs auction, we've seen that to many times.

There is nothing ethical or unethical about starting or stopping an auction.
Your "offer" is coming from someone that knows what it could possibly end at and hopes that you don't.
You would probably lose money by taking the offer.

Not a big deal but for future reference the purpose of BA is for any future member to quickly find the reply that an OP found most helpful for the question they asked. And buyers asking sellers to end auctions early with a high offer is a fairly common issue, so if someone finds this thread they'll see a rather weird reply chosen as Best.
Incidentally @a_c_green 's suggestion is definitely a huge eBay violation, possibly illegal, although I am sure they were joking and certainly deserve points for creative humor. 😉

Just as a side note, I personally know a guy who bought an item at a local estate sale for $85.00, came home and put it on eBay as an auction and it sold for over $13K. (This has been three or four years ago.) But just goes to show that those "little surprises" are still out there and if someone wants something badly enough, they will pay for it. The Pyrex dishes may not get anywhere near that but it's still a pretty chunk of change already and still a ways to go.

OP1 year agoIt is quite amazing. I saw this at a little thrift shop I noticed it one day and pick up a couple of other things. I went back the next day and bought the set. I think this is the fun of EBay we are all searching for the item that hits a nerve and every once in a while it happens. The bids are now getting close to the crazy offer so I’m am very happy and excited to watch it play out

Bubble wrap around each piece, each into its own little box, into a microwave box, peanuts between the boxes.

double box, with plenty of packing material between the boxes.

·1 year agoI would recommend planning the packing and gathering information. If you are not comfortable packing breakables, there are places that will do that for you (UPS.) Make sure they know it is a high dollar item (you want heavy duty boxes, etc.) I would consider shipping by USPS registered mail. It is handled manually and so more carefully, which is what you would want for high dollar items. The service can also be much less expensive than offered by other carriers (with the same kind of insurance attached.) If you go this way, make sure the package fits within the USPS size limits. Good luck!! With the steady bidding, I would not be surprised if the price gets 'crazier'.

·1 year agoRegistered Mail would definitely get more careful handling, BUT it would also slow down the shipping process, so the delivery date would be later than eBay's estimated delivery. I wonder if it's possible to combine Priority Mail Express together with Registered Mail?
The size limit for USPS is a length-plus-girth of 108 inches, except for Ground Advantage which is 130 inches. For example, the length-plus-girth of a 20-inch cube is 100 inches, and that would probably be sufficient for this collection.

·1 year agoRegistered mail is not for a package where speed is an issue. If this were mine, I would probably add something to the listing about sending the package by registered mail because of the value. IMO it's worth taking somewhat longer to greatly lessen the risk of damage.

·1 year agoI don't think that can be adding to an auction with bids. (There used to be a time when additional info could be added but ebay took away that ability.)
Personally, I'd avoid UPS and Fedex. I've seen too many stories of packages disappearing when they've packed valuable items. IMO, USPS is the safest and most economical choice. Just pack it well.

·1 year agoI was suggesting UPS to pack the item, if they were not comfortable doing it themselves. Then going with USPS as the carrier. Additional information can be added to an auction, just not at the end ( I haven't checked the time frame.) The shipping information can't be changed directly. I would hope that this would be agreeable to both buyer and seller and they both want it to get there safely.

·1 year agoLOL. Sure they will. Crazy Pyrex collectors do. All the time. There was one here a few years ago that went north of 10K IIRC. Pyrex collectors are serious & usually follow through. Chances are good the bidders even know who they're bidding against.
@jrho2561 First of all, congrats! Second of all, do NOT use UPS to pack it. I just had occasion to have them pack some valuables & ship them cross country. Since they went to my sister's house, I also found out how they were packed & it was HORRIBLY. They just basically took what I gave them & put a few circles of bubble wrap around the outside. There were probably 50 camera lenses & filters. I took them there b/c I would have wrapped each one individually since they're fragile glass & I didn't want to take the time. They didn't wrap even one of them. Thankfully, nothing broke, but considering how much they charged to do it, it was a complete rip off.
I guarantee you that I can pack this 1000x better than any UPS store & you can too. Feel free to DM me if you want packing advice. One of my fb's talks about how an ornament was the best packaging job they'd ever had in all their years buying on eBay LOL. It's not hard, it just takes patience & time. The key is no movement at all in the box & double box this. I'm sure you won't mind at the price this is heading towards. One went around 10K a few years ago. I don't recall the pattern. Chances are excellent that you will get paid, they will not be a scammer & they will simply be a very happy buyer!

·1 year agoThis was a big story in Sept. 2023. I shop occasionally at this location but never found anything THIS valuable.
