Artificial Ignorance Strikes again and again what can you do?
Summary: In this discussion, participants share their thoughts on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in addressing claims as sellers. wri-8727 mentions that the AI's approach is similar to teaching a baby to talk and highlights the sneaky nature of big corporations implementing such technology. Others, including ryry-jj and meme6253, reflect on the historical context of AI, comparing it to early automated chess and checkers, while also discussing technological advancements like underwater data centers in China, which have natural cooling benefits. Overall, the conversation evaluates both the potential and the underlying motives of AI's role in this context.
I listed Antique Small Manganese Glass Oil Lamp with Flip Top Burner it was removed, ebay now claims oil lamps are a fire hazard because they can tip over. Very obviously done by Artificial Ignorance no human being is this totally stupid.
"It appears you're trying to list a tabletop fireplace that uses a bioethanol fuel. These products may not be sold on eBay. If tipped over, these fireplaces pose a fire hazard."
Why should I have to spend hours of my time trying to convince ebay that the item is what it says in the listing and description it's an plain old oil lamp 1000s on ebay for sale with burners on them. Nothing in my listing even mentioned a fireplace or bioethanol fuel AI just made it up fake news out of thin air. And then you get this:

Was that an AI pick?

AI reminds me of the scientific promises of peaceful uses of atomic energy: mining, cars and even watches that never needed winding and all the while they were only building bigger and bigger bombs. Big enough to destroy the world.

·4 months agoYes there has never been a new technology that hasn't been abused or mishandled in a bad way.
Reminds me of the lady that spent 108 days in custody when she was innocent. AI facial recognition falsely flagged her as a suspect in a North Dakota bank fraud case. She'd never been to North Dakota but she was arrested and extradited. The fact that no human personally verified AI's claim should give us all pause...........................................

·4 months agoI had a knife get pulled a week back because, it had a button lock on it and either someone reported it as a switchblade or the bots did it.EVEN though I had it listed with the words "EBAY THIS IS NOT A SWITCHBLADE KNIFE" I had to fight and prove it was not by an internet listing of the same knife. Crazy and frustrating

·4 months agoActually...towns and cities are rebelling to data centers being built.
These centers tend to use the towns and cities water supply...drying up the water for residents.
And electricity is enormous running these centers...thus increasing resident's electric bills who live near them.
And then there's the pollution.
So I wouldn't say it is futile.
Currently Salt Lake City area is fighting one and the state of Georgia is pushing back to end any more built.
Should be interesting what happens in our future.

·4 months ago@12345jamesstamps I read China has figured out how to build data centers in the ocean.
--->The Shanghai Center Location: Submerged about 10 meters beneath the sea surface in the Lin-gang Special Area of Shanghai.
Power Source: Directly connected to adjacent offshore wind farms.
Specs: Housed in pressure-resistant, watertight steel modules, the $226 million facility holds nearly 2,000 AI servers.

·4 months agoAI has been around for a long time. It just hasn’t always been called that and it’s worked in a more “primitive” way than what we’re seeing now.
Automatic chess and checkers “opponents” are examples of early AI in action.

·4 months agoEBAY bots are very stupid. I woman had her naked Barbie doll removed for pornography.
Don't waste your time trying to appeal this. Even if customer service tells you it is okay, EBAY bots will just remove it again. This could result in your account being suspended.

·4 months agoJust speculating here. But couldn't the listing title remove the words Oil and Burner and not be pulled?
Someone looking for that type of item would surely know that it was an oil lamp.
animal-house-8
OP4 months agoIt could be but ebay wants you to add item specifics and Keywords for search.
23,000+ results for oil burner, 59 results for Stove with flip top burner
ryry-jj
·4 months agoI can understand it being flagged for "oil" & "burner". All this listing could face more restrictions now with AI. After all, how does eBay know for a fact that all oil has been removed 100%. It is the same issue with cigarette lighters that contain fuel.

·4 months agoWe are teaching artificial intelligence how to respond to claims as sellers.
In order to teach it how to analyze situations it(AI) will periodically pick up listings and hoping the seller will respond to them to help it understand how to solve listing issues.
It's like teaching a baby how to talk and such.
The data is gathered and future claims can be answered by artificial intelligence without human intervention.
Interesting thoughts?
Example situations have to be brought to teach it.
I received two listing issues...I noted both were a month apart on the same day of each month.

·4 months ago"It's like teaching a baby how to talk and such."
Yup, its only going to get more powerful and more powerful...and its here, and everywhere, to stay!
Today, it is a bit like calling a two year old Albert Einstein stupid...he is only going to learn and learn and learn...
12345jamesstamps
·4 months agoI picked it up when I notice the listing issue happened on the same day of each month one month apart.
It just wanted me to resolve the listing issues.
Strange because I have duplicate listings of the one that had a listing issue...to pick on one and not the others doesn't make sense.
I don't feel it is my job to teach artificial intelligence so I did not resolve them.
I am waiting to see if I get another one next month...had one in April and one in May.
And then there was a post here of someone getting a listing issue on the same day as me in May.

OP4 months agoThe problem I see is who is doing the teaching, Musk did not like a answer GROK was giving out about him so he had it changed, so you will think the way they want you to.
Specific groups of people can directly change, manipulate, or override AI answers. Because AI models do not operate in a vacuum, their outputs are heavily controlled and influenced by the choices, inputs, and authority of different people.

Just hope the sneaky underhandedness of it all doesn't rub off on whatever it is that eBay calls it's AI.
