Apparently scammers can just send scam links through the private message system on the forums
Summary: onefootflipper reported receiving a scam private message claiming to be from eBay, expressing surprise that the new forum system is not effectively filtering such messages. Other participants, including soh.maryl and adamcartwright, confirmed experiencing similar issues and some noted that previous systems did not have this problem. dhbookds questioned the lack of widespread discussion about the issue and mentioned contacting eBay representatives. There was a debate about whether moderation is focusing on minor post edits rather than significant security concerns. Participants advised using the 'Flag' option to report suspicious messages, highlighting the confusion between 'Flag' and 'Report' options.
I have used these forums on and off since the 1990s, and never once have I got a scammer personal message claiming to be from ebay and with a poison link to try to get me to fall for it and give them my login details.
Yet, I got one today. I guess the new forums are not filtering for that at all. They sent me the message 28 hours ago and the message still exists and the account does as well.
I can't imagine that any of you would fall for it. But I also could never imagine that someone would be trying to use Ebay on Windows 7 in 2026. I also never imagined that people who have sold for 20 years don't understand ebay fees or how listings roll over. Or that people would list 10,000 trading cards for 99 cents free ship and send each one out at a dead loss. But since I have seen all of those (the last 2 nearly daily), I assume some people will fall for those messages.

·1 week agoI just got my second one. I had never gotten these in the old forum.

·1 week agoFor anyone who's trying to report such a message, btw, it looked like the correct option to choose is "Flag", which is confusing wording since there is a "Report" option for comments or posts instead.

·1 week agoI just got one a few moments ago. It does seem like that's the type of thing that should be easily caught before the message is even sent. The old forums would have caught that I think.

Why not, been using it for years.

·1 week agoIt appears the forum is poorly run, for this to happen, with all the effort going into editing posts to remove any minor thing that the mods don't like.

·1 week agoIn the old system they could do this too, so this isn't a new thing. Reporting it is the thing to do so it can be addressed, same as the old system. However @jonathanbrightlight posted a very important observation about what to click on when wanting to report this type of issue. Use "Flag".

OP1 week agoVery similar, although the wording was quite different.

·1 week agoMine was just like the one dhbookskds linked. I had seen that other people had already reported it so I replied something to the effect "Thank You very much. I spend way too much time and money on eBay and being suspended will save me money and time to do other things."
It seems as if any post or comment I make gets gone over with the proverbial fine toothed comb but that phishing message slipped through................?

·1 week agoIf it makes you feel any better, you're not the only one. There have been several posts. I received one also.

I was the first to report this scam here, and my post about it was edited by the mods ... they even changed the title of my thread - new members will fall for it and they can say bye-bye to their cc info.
