Add me to the list of wrongful AI takedowns.
Apparently this is the "uniform" that Police here wear.
Has anyone had any luck with the online appeals process?

·5 months agoPolice nowadays don't wear uniforms. Wear some khakis and boots with that shirt and could be easily mistaken for a real officer. It is no problem finding a fake badge. This is the reason for eBays denial.

·5 months agoI just got one taken down by AI. Has anyone appealed one of these? If so how did it go?
inhawaii
OP5 months agoI appealed the takedown of this shirt.
That was a couple of days ago.
Did not hear back from ebay with good or bad news.
mozartbach1971
·5 months agoI might try appealing my take down as I listed similar items in the past and had no issues.

·5 months agoWhat was the item that got taken down? What was the reason eBay gave for the take down?

I think I found the shirt here https://hprahawaii.org/about/
Maybe you can fight AI with AI lol

·5 months agoI had a listing taken down about two days ago. Could not figure out why even after I read the email that eBay sent me.
I don't list socks or underwear. The listing was for some used sporting goods. A day later I received another message from eBay letting me know that my appeal was successful and the listing is back on.
I was surprised by this outcome since I did not file an appeal. I was still thinking about it.
A.I. must be in charge of more of ebay than I thought it was. And just for the record, I don't believe that A.I. stands for artificial intelligence. I believe that A.I. stands for artificial insanity.
This is off-topic, but I did find it interesting that (according to eBay), Bras are not considered underwear. All of the women I've ever know have been wearing their bras wrong. Bras go on last, not first.

·5 months agoOddly they allow Sellers to list USED hose which I wold think covers both categories, socks and undies.

I need a new hose for my garden ... it's OK if it's used but with no holes.

OP5 months agoJust out of curiosity, I just did a search on "Honolulu Police Shirt" knowing it would bring up several other similar shirts, which it did. No surprise.
But what surprised me was I discovered they only took down my listing for size L in black.
My listing for the same shirt in a size XL in blue remains. *sigh*

·5 months agoThose who think AI is the best thing since tea bags I don't think realise that it's all in the application. It's actually pretty dumb. It doesn't think, it just compiles.

OP5 months agoWhen you were here for the Honolulu marathon, how many Police officers did you see wearing a "Aloha" T-shirt? 😉
a_c_green
·5 months agoThat being the case, it sounds like someone spotted that one listing and reported it. AI would indeed have swept up every similar listing, especially one from the same seller and presumably showing the same image(s) .
My first thought, given that it's got what looks like an accurately-rendered shield logo on it, was that it's a piece of off-duty swag that a first responder can wear when he's not working. Here in Chicago you see plenty of CPD and CFD T-shirts, sweatshirts and so on worn around town. (Go to a charity softball tournament sometime...)
So there's no official prohibition against buying the stuff and wearing it, but eBay doesn't want it sold on their platform, even though they may not be aggressively enforcing their restriction until someone pokes them about it.
inhawaii
OP5 months agoTotally understand.
This is ebay's sandbox and we have to follow their rules whether we agree or not.
iamalwaysright
·5 months agoIt’s sad. I predict no one is able to dress up as a cop for Halloween anymore no one will be able to find a costume. Firefighters are next.
On a more serious note, how are these not allowed and toy guns are?

·5 months agoYou can't list UPS, USPS, FedEx and other uniforms either. Those make it possible for criminals to imitate those workers.
I had a really nice UPS Carhartt coat that they booted, I gave it to my UPS driver.

·5 months agoBest to just drop it. Don't want to get banned . " emergency response uniforms, equipment, or accessories" That could cover almost anything. The pen they use to write with or a notebook.

They're sold to the general public.

OP5 months agoI would definitely mistake that guy for a Honolulu Police Officer. 😉

·5 months agoIf he was one of ours, his last name would start with a 'Mac' or 'Mc'
He doesn't look like a Mac or Mc
He must be one of yours
If he ever arrests you, just say: "Hey big fella' ... the doughnut thing was just a joke."
Then run
btw - I have friends at the gym of similar size and they can still motor on fairly fast.

It’s the impersonation concern. If someone shows up at your front door wearing clothing that resembles law enforcement, flashes a badge, and even shows an ID or driver’s license from a distance, most people aren’t going to stop and analyze every detail in that moment. They’ll assume authority. Platforms and agencies are probably trying to reduce that kind of risk. If an item sold on the platform is later used in a crime, victims or even law enforcement could argue that the platform knowingly facilitated access to impersonation gear.
pastimpressions
·5 months agoRidiculous, but at least there is a shield/badge and the word "police" on the shirt.
I had an item flagged by AI because it violated U.K. trade policy as an item/ingredient not permitted to be bought or sold within the U.K.
A literal duplicate "sell similar" of a previous sold listing unchanged in every way except buy it now price. Pulled. Warned.
BUT, I reside in the U.S. and only sell within the U.S., so the "takedown" was beyond bogus & absent all reason.
Are you successful in protesting it? Don't know, I was so p - o - d I didn't waste the energy. I will if it happens again because it was boloney that cost an easy sale.
Be careful @inhawaii, if you sell anything shaped like and/or with the word "pineapple" in it, AI may make an erroneous linkage betwixt "pineapple" the juicy and "pineapple" as in the trademark dimples on an incendiary device and down goes another listing. Watch out for your candy!
Best of luck.
grann-4629
·5 months agoDo the police in Hawaii greet you at a murder scene wearing a shirt that says 'Aloha' in big letters? Maybe they should add a happy face to make victims of crime a little happier and I'm sure it would bring joy to the bad guy just before they lock him up.
You can buy much better police stuff at a costume shop if you want to fool anyone.
Very friendly State indeed ...
grann-4629
·5 months agoI just looked at that item about 1 minute ago! Really!
Are you doing those Jedi mind tricks again?
What about the Honolulu Police decal you have listed - are they after that also?
tobaccocardyahoo
·5 months agoIn light of the level of human stupidity, the AI is correct in removing this listing.
Someone will believe the wearer is a cop.
grann-4629
·5 months agoIf firefighters can appear wearing a pair of shorts and no shirt in their calendars, why not the cops? Or, are the calendars also banned on eBay? How about a toy police car or a gag CIA business card?
This is getting ridiculous, and yes, I do know it's eBay's playground and we have to follow their rules so I don't need to hear that from others 😎😎
tobaccocardyahoo
·5 months agoEbay is expected to show its support for the nanny state.
My stupidity comment is unfortunately in keeping with the role of the nanny state, to protect people from their own stupidity. No one is stupid enough to believe an official status associated with a toy police car.
chapeau-noir
·5 months agoI don't think it's the nanny state, I think it's just a combination of Artificial Stupidity and corporate CYA. If actual humans had reviewed that listing, they would have known it was not a uniform and let it go.
grann-4629
·5 months agoWe are not dealing with real people ... it's elementary AI that makes the decision and when it sees the star on the side of the toy car, it thinks it's real, and voila ... it's gone!

·5 months agoHow the heck am I suppose to complete my outfit now? I can buy the handcuffs on eBay but not the uniform. I guess I'll just keep wearing that plastic police smock that I used for Halloween when I was a kid.

·5 months agoWell I would imagine that the cops are pretty laid back enough in Hawaii to wear T-Shirts & Flowered Shorts.

·5 months agoYeah, and everyone in Hawaii lives in a grass hut and eats coconuts all day. And the cops drive around in rickshaws and carry machetes instead of guns.

How else do you think they harvest their pineapples ... guns would cause too much damage and McGarrett got rid of all of them back in the 60's? 🥸🥸

·5 months agoI have one taken down on the 4th of May and on the 4th of April...when was yours taken down?
So, my question which might help us to solve these situations is :
How was your description and such listed in words?
I am trying to wonder if artificial intelligence can do identification on photos or not.
Or if it was words we added?

·5 months ago"Has anyone had any luck with the online appeals process?"
No, the annual increase in AI stupidity experienced during this period has caused processing delays with the online appeals process.
