Accepted an offer for an item, but it is now relisted for some reason
Summary: ateotd87 expressed confusion about an item they accepted an offer for, noting it was relisted without notification. gurlcat explained that items remain active until paid for, with a chance for others to purchase at full price. Discrepancies in how accepted offers are handled were discussed, highlighting inconsistencies in system behavior. inhawaii initially disagreed about the relisting but apologized upon clarifying the situation with other participants. Additional insights confirmed that until payment is made, the item remains listed and active for other potential buyers.
I received and accepted an offer for an item earlier today. Now I see that the item is relisted, with no notification of what happened. Did the buyer cancel? I thought there would have been some kind of notice for that.

Are both listings for the same price? Or, is one the offer price and the other the original price?
The offer is a separate listing, at the accepted price, only for that buyer.
The regular listing stays active at the original price. This way, the item isn’t sitting stagnant while the offerer decides to pay or not.

It hasn't been "relisted".
It's been listed since August.
There's no sale or offer accepted.
I think you are confused.

OP1 month ago · EditedI know what I saw and read in the offer, and how I responded. Yes, the listing is still visible. That's the point. It shouldn't be.

·1 month agoThe listing that is there now was NOT re-listed.
It's been up since August.
So there was no offer accepted.
I guess you're not capable of making a mistke.

·1 month ago · Edited@inhawaii They said (in a reply to me) that it shows as 'Awaiting payment' in their orders. So they did accept the buyer's offer, but the item is still visible and purchasable by anybody, at the original price.
When/why/how this happens (as opposed to the item being taken down and exclusive to that offer-making buyer) we don't know. Some have thought they knew, but then it turned out those 'rules' weren't consistent. And we've done experiments to try to nail it down, to no avail.

OP1 month agoOkay, it technically wasn't "relisted". What I mean is it shouldn't be visible anymore. And reading around the this section, it sounds like this isn't the only time this has happened.

·1 month agoCorrect. It seems random as to when this occurs. There have been theories about it depending on whether it was the buyer or seller who made the offer, whether the seller has 'auto-pay' turned on or not, whether the offer was an 'original' offer versus as counter-offer, etc etc etc.
My suspicion is that it's a secret setting that applies to some BUYERS rather than a setting that sellers can control. And I think I see the same thing in whether auto-pay works or not. It may even be a thing where a gradual roll-in simply didn't fully roll-in to all buyer accounts. Wouldn't be the first time eBay left a project unfinished.

·1 month agoMy apologies @ateotd87 .
I didn't know the part about it showing "awaiting payment".

When you accept an offer from a buyer, the item isn't considered sold until it's paid for. And since the buyer hasn't paid yet, the item remains active and if another buyer swoops in an buys it or if they make an offer that you consider reasonable, you can sell it to them.
Again, you haven't sold the item yet.
gurlcat

gurlcat
·1 month ago@ateotd87 Is the listing in your Orders page as 'Waiting for payment'?
Just FYI, buyers cannot cancel orders; they can only request sellers to cancel them.
Also cancelled orders don't automatically relist unless you approved the setting for that, but considering you know you didn't cancel this order, the question of it relisting itself is moot.
Either you didn't actually accept the offer like you thought you did, or it's one of the (*unpredictable) accepted offers where the item remains visible and purchasable to others, while the buyer with the offer hunts for their wallet or whatever.

OP1 month agoThere's no question I clicked "Accept Offer". When I look at manage offers, it says "Awaiting payment". But the item is still listed.

·1 month agoLucky you! This person isn't getting to hold the item hostage while they decide whether they really want to pay for it or not. Anyone else could see it and decide to pay FULL price if they want.
