The current AI bubble certainly has a different whiff than the late 90s dot-com bubble. Then there was hope for the future, now it's propping up a sagging economic picture in an increasingly dystopian application. The end result may be similar, though - bust and recovery.

ETA: This article incidentally is replicated on a number of sites (typically for this kind of thing) - but I'm not at all surprised by the content as there has been a lot of discussion of how little people who are rushing to use AI actually know anything about it.

Mmm, yeah... Well, first of all, thank you for posting the link. I've read the whole thing, and it has the dry whiff of AI-generated text itself. There's way too much repetition of the phrase "use AI" or "using AI" for this, that or other task without really saying how it's actually used for that task. Without a whole lot more detail, I just don't buy the conclusion. They state that their survey contacted 1,342 "manager-level employees" on-line and drew their conclusions from those results. I'm finding that to be pretty thin soup.

I spent a lot of time in management, and I came away with the idea that those people who strive to be managers are usually bad at it because they want the control but can't actually manage people. I did OK because I kind of kept ending up in management due to being in operations, but my heart never left the trenches.

I was in management for over 40 years staring at 19 yrs old. Hired over 1000, promoted over 100 into Mgt positions after training them to be the best.

Firm but fair. Lead by example. Not your mouth.

Fired those that just thought the 'hat' meant they were god (not my hires/promotees)

All from Construction to Big Box Retail.

AI has no business in that business.

What a joke.

I was just a humble editor and operations person (forms creation, quality assurance, etc.) so I got it from both sides - admin over us, and people I was supposed to manage. Once I had five people crammed into my cubicle yelling about the Oxford comma. I realised then why the person who had previously held my job had been caught with a bottle of gin in the bottom drawer of her desk.

Great story; and I agree- bottle of gin lol.

I once had to fire a cashier trainee after 4 hours because she returned from lunch...drunk.

10 year Receiving Manager failed random drug test. Had to fire. Then find a new hire.

I hired my wife's Tool Dept employee (from a competing store) because she bragged about her all the time. Gave her a Mgt job making 2x what she was making. Then after she was trained by my existing tool mgr, fired him because he was worthless.

Went from 3.5% shrink to .80 shrink the following year with new mgr.

These were all 'people' things. No way AI could handle/figure this.

Of course it is a people thing. What does one do in a situation, when AI is the "end all, be all" determiner, and people are not allowed to intervene? That is what worries me in a sense.

There are some "industries" that don't rely on it at all. As an aside, my nephew is employed by a "pot farm" in FL. No worries, I don't suppose about drug testing..LOL.. it is on his clothes, in his mask, and though off to a rough start because he had a brain and recognized the labels they were told to use were incorrect which resulted in a bit of drama. I told him to keep his mouth shut, and all would work out when the work had to all be done over. The company still wants to "promote him" all the time. He told HR when he started he wanted to LEARN each aspect of the business first so as to be confident in the knowledge required in each department.

At least for me, it would be sad if he lost his job due to AI saying those "labels" were correct, and he was wrong. Cell phone cameras come in handy sometimes. I would suppose there are better AI programs than what we see on eBay, but just the same it is creepy if a bot decides your destiny i.e. "you look like that guy, so it is you" .

Two-thirds of these managers have NO formal AI training. None.

Next, you may not have a choice. AI will replace arresting officers, prosecutors, judges and juries. Kind of like eBay....."we said you got the parcel so you did"....or "the buyer said the item was not as described so it is not as described". AI told us you robbed the bank so you did.....LOL>

Some police depts are already using AI to fill out incident reports using feeds from their body cams. The supervisors interviewed said the officers carefully review the reports for accuracy before signing them off. How carefully at the end of their shift not wanting to be late for something after work? It is worrying that they are relying on AI to remember what transpired. Could be helpful depending?

Another worry is that AI is predicted to be able to replicate anyone doing anything within 3 years or so on video. I can't imagine that not being abused against politicians, businesses or even angry people against neighbors, employers etc.etc.

I know 3 years from now I won't accept video as proof of anything if that indeed happens as predicted. I can see sitting on a jury and wondering "is this CCTV video AI or real?"

Seems to me most people are scared of how intelligent AI may be...
