1099-k preferred format - Ebay asking me....anyone else?
My last 1099-k was in PDF and I got one in the mail. But recently eBay asked me how I would prefer to get my 1099-k, either by mail or PDF. Looks like they are not offering both anymore. Anyone else get that notice?
Funny thing is my sales for 2023 are below $200....so I'm not sure why they are asking me how I want to receive my 1099-k??? I'm not going to get one, I didn't sell much. And I only have one eBay account. But I know how to run the reports for tax purposes. Thanks.

·2 years agoI saw that too. I immediately jumped on the PDF. That way I always know where the form is (on my computer) not misfiled or inadvertently thrown away.

·2 years agoMe too. I can print out the PDF anytime I want a paper copy. If you choose to receive a paper original and then misplace it, you're kind of stuck at that moment. It's not irretrievable, but at the time you need it and discover you can't find it, you're probably not going to want a huge delay before getting a replacement.
I go for the emailed copy, print that as needed, and also keep the email on hand in case I ever need to refer back to it later. As my email resides on the network and not on any specific machine, I don't need to worry about any single device failure wiping out my stored records.

I am just the opposite since I print out a copy of my taxes once I have finished filing them may as well be eBay's ink and paper and not mine for that piece of the package. The last thing I need is a computer crash and data loss followed by an IRS audit. Happened to a friend of mine and the IRS wouldn't buy off on the dog ate my homework bit.

·2 years agoEverything here is backed up on a network server, and taxes and such like as well kept on a separate drive because of that possibility. Always best to have some kind of backup one way or another. One can keep a drive or paper files in a small strongbox, too.

·2 years agoI also like to have tax related documents in hard copy but I want them sent to me in digital format so I choose the ones to print for my tax archives (they go back an unnecessary 45 years). Any that I receive in paper form gets scanned and store on my hard drive.
ANYONE who operates any type of business or has more than very basic personal tax slips should be backing up, the cost in minimal and can be automated. I have one back up drive connected to my desktop and I swap it out for a mirror drive every couple of months. One remains connected, one is kept offsite in a secure location. If my house burns down or my computer system stolen my important documents would be readily available. That backup includes more than documents of course, it also has any "content" that I create, text or image/video and all email history (23 years of emails!) also the recovery files to easily reinstall my system from any mechanical meltdown or malware attack.
I do not back up audio/video files that have been downloaded from 3rd party sources since I have a ridiculous amount of that stuff and it would require a lot of hard drives. The important stuff can be stored easily on a $50 hard drive or for a bit more, SSD's although they are known to have a higher out of the blue failure rate while most mechanical drives give warning signs before they die. In any event when you have a backup you can always create a new backup from the other copy, rare to have two hard drives dies at the same time when they are in different locations.

I won't be getting one either, for the 2 sales I've had this yer.
I saw that banner about paperless 1099 . I just hit the “X†haven’t seen it since.

·2 years agoThey are trying to get more sellers to go the electronic route to avoid the mailing costs. I have gotten mine in the mail for the last several years not only from eBay but from PayPal, Venmo, Google Pay and several others.
