Laserjet Toner Roller Has Dark Residue. Can I Clean It?

I have a HP Laserjet toner and I notice the light blue colored roller has some dark spots on it. Can I clean that off or will it damage the toner?

Laser printers have a drum roller (transfer roller) that appears to be mylar-covered and that uses static to apply toner. This is typically a disposable/replaceable toner unit.

If toner has built up on the mylar roller (the most common location for buildup), physical scrubbing will easily damage the roller and cause future voids or lines in the print area. That surface is easily nicked or scratched. That roller MUST remain smooth and unmarred. However, I do clean mine with an alcohol-moistened Qtip (or better yet, a lint-free optical cleaning cloth) and lightly dissolve and gently dab away at toner buildup on the roller. The alcohol evaporates quickly with no ill effects. Avoid scrubbing or scratching.

Eventually, if pages exhibit streaking and spotting (which can be caused by careless cleaning, or rough removal of paper jams, or by a buildup of paper dust on the roller blade, which digs tiny grooves), that drum roller (or drum unit) will need to be replaced.

    Hi @mozartbach1971

Your best bet is to google HP Cleaning recommendations for the model printer you have.  It could be as easy as removing the roller and washing it with mild soapy water since to my knowledge a lot of the ink used today is water based.  You still may wind up with some dark stains on the roller depending on the material's porosity but I am sure it will function as designed.

In our printing classes in college we ran different presses and depending on the ink and roller material they were cleaned in different ways with specific cleaning solutions.
