Why Offer 30 Day Returns When eBay Allows Returns Past 60 Days
I offer 30 day free returns. Had a buyer purchase an item 11/30, delivered 12/3. Requested a return on 1/27 for "purchased by mistake" and that they had not used it. Did not except return as packaging had been opened (per pics from buyer), cannot determine condition of item and can no longer sell as new in package. Buyer might have used it, no way for me to tell. Buyer files case on 2/13 and eBay is allowing them to return item for full refund. Placed hold on funds, etc. Never had eBay do this on a return request before.

·3 years agoMy guess is that 'return' is NOT an eBay return- it is a Charge Back from the Buyers Credit Card. Nothing to do with eBay; all they can do is pass on that info and you need to 'respond' to the chargeback.

Buyer requested a return 45 days after receipt of item - that is 15 days after the return window. eBay provides the option to decline a return outside of the 30 day window. Looking at pics provided by buyer of packaging and item, I declined to accept return. Thought that would be end of it. Now, on 2/13 buyer contacts eBay because I did not accept their return request. eBay creates a case, puts holds on funds and states they "are allowing the buyer to return the item" and will refund the buyer once they see the item has been returned. No new case or request was filed. This has all happened within the original return request.

I am quite familiar with the returns process. I have 30 day free returns. I have to accept returns within 30 days, which I always do, valid or not. This was outside my 30 day timeframe.
This is not the first time a buyer has tried a return after 30 days. Every time was been an attempt to get buy with something. I'll deal with eBay once I get it back.

·3 years agoEbay allows buyers to request returns whether you have a return policy or if it's past the return window because some sellers don't mind accepting the request.
But you aren't obligated and I'm not sure why ebay allowed it this time. It shouldn't have happened that way.

Well, color me quite befuzzled. You know, this reads like there weren't two cases... but that the buyer was allowed to appeal your decision, since it was always "within the original return request". I've never heard of that happening, either. And it's a bit unnerving, if I understand correctly.

·3 years agoNotwithstanding the dates, you have free returns. That means they can return an item for any reason, including purchased by mistake or they no longer want it if it's in your timeframe. You can't say you accept returns in your listing and then say no I won't because you can't tell the condition it will be returned in. A buyer has to open the package to see if they want to keep it or not. If it's in worse condition like tags removed or missing parts you can deduct up to 50% from their return.

·3 years ago@ipostwiththisname I just want to clarify and hope you can come back to write more details. Buyers cannot open more than one case on eBay. When you say buyer 'requested a return' on 1/27 do you mean they simply sent you a message asking if they could return as they hadn't used it? Not an actual return case in the system. That's why they then opened a case through eBay on 2/13? Is that what you mean?

·3 years agoSo you didn't accept a remorse Return (which I think is okay at this late date), but eBay allowed the buyer to open another Return claim, possibly citing a Not as Described reason? 🤔
