who pays for return shipping?
Sold a set of books, sent MM for $5.13, so over a pound. Buyer is returning, "no longer needed." Requesting a refund of purchase price only. I do not offer free returns unless there is a defect or not received, certainly not for "changed my mind." Return is coming back Ground Advantage. Is there any way Ebay can charge me for the return label? Hard to believe buyer is paying more to return the books than the purchase price ($8). Ebay hold is for $8.

I have 30 day returns and about 5 or 6 times a year I have a buyer that wants to remorse return an item where the cost of shipping two ways is more than the refund they would get.
Normally if you explain to someone that they would lose less money by keeping the item they usually do keep it...and most of the time if they are into the item for half they usually close the return as well.

Did the buyer open a return request with you, or did the buyer simply return the books without requesting the return?
If the buyer is returning the books without going through the proper eBay process, that's on the buyer -- you have the choice to refund, or not.
If the buyer did an official eBay return, and their excuse is "no longer needed," that's very close to a "remorse return," and the buyer should be refunded only for the books, but not the postage.

OP1 week ago · Editedthey did it through Ebay. I suspect Ebay provided the label and the buyer won't find out about the cost until it is deducted from their refund account.

If the buyer paid for the return label, all you need to do is refund for the books, once you receive them.
You may be able to deduct a "handling fee" for the return, but I'm not sure about that.

·1 week agoBased on your listings you have buyer pays return.
No longer needed should be like a changed my mind. It was not claimed as a defect.
The buyer will be charged for the label - it is deducted from their return amount.
If you had free returns you would pay the return shipping but would not have to credit the original shipping.
At least that is how it has worked for me.
