Thinly-veiled remorse return on Day 29. Safe to decline or no?
I just recieved a return request 29 days after item delivery. (to me, those always reek of "I tried to re-sell your item for a profit and it didn't work out for me, so now, you should take it back.." But I digress..
The buyer even left positive feedback right after getting the item, said it was "exactly as described". 29 days later, they claim it doesn't fit their device and might cause damage... which kind of hints to me their next move will be an INAD over the phone with an agent. They put the return reason as "doesn't fit".
I feel like this is terribly unfair. I sell several of these items and they're rock solid. I do my job well and describe things clearly. I have No Returns on all listings.
The window for this item to be "hot" and get my money's worth has passed... I'll lose $30+ on this sale because either they didn't pay attention & bought the wrong size for their device or tried to re-sell my item and failed. (given the stretch-out to Day 29, my money's on the latter.)
If I decline, they'll surely get on the phone and try to get it escalated to INAD right? Do I eat this one? Zero risk of negative FB, but non-zero risk of manual escalation and headache. I hate as sellers, we have so little protection...I love 99% of my buyers, but every once in awhile you get one like this...

·10 months agoBetter they pay it's return than you if a SNAD is filed. Yep another wally mart shopper. They return as fast as they buy. Place then on your blocked bidder list too.

I assume you have another selling account because nothing was sold on this account so I can't see your return policy.
But if you have a 30 day return policy and the buyer filed for a return on day 29, they ARE within your policy and you are obligated to accept the return.

·10 months agoDoesn't fit is a remorse return, depending on your returns policy (which I assume is "No Returns") you have the right to decline it. Once that happens the return closes and the buyer can NOT open another return (for any or any other reason).
And if you want to play it safe you could wait two days, then decline it.
Just don't wait too long, there is a deadline where the buyer can escalate but until then the cards are in your hand (or the ball is in your court lol).

·10 months agoDon't over think it. Just deny the return. If they run to their credit card ebay will cover you. If they leave a negative it should be removeable.

·10 months agoWhat are you basing that claim on? eBay’s seller protections for payment disputes have very specific requirements, and if you’re seeing something there I’m not, I’m all ears. Here’s the policy if you’d like to refer to it: https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-policies/payment-dispute-seller-protections?id=5293

·10 months agoI am basing it off from a good amount of experience in dealing with them. Not to mention I just went through the same scenario a couple weeks ago and as every other time ebay had my back. The seller is under no obligation to accept or send a refund for that return. None.

·10 months agoI hate to burst your bubble.
If the buyer files a Not as described case with their credit card it is a win/lose situation. Buyer wins seller loses.

·10 months agoNot true. In my experience worst case scenario ebay covers it and has your back. People saying differently are either talking out their rears and have no experience in returns/disputes or for some reason ebay treats them much differently than me.

·10 months agoSince no one here has ever reported the same experience, and the written policy explicitly disagrees with your claims, I’d say it’s clear.

·10 months agoHi @bgt_masters_of_tiki_d
Just so you know … the ‘people saying different things’ are highly experienced buyers and sellers who have been reading and responding to posts in eBay’s Community for years. They know what typically happens in these situations.
The majority of sellers simply don’t have your apparent ability to get out of chargebacks … and statistics support that. Sellers usually end up losing their funds (plus an additional $20) AND the item …without any recourse.
If you’re telling the truth about your own experience … then you must be an especially blessed human being … but it is HIGHLY unlikely that your special blessings will fall upon the OP and other sellers …just because you say they will.
Do you plan on helping the OP out if they take your advice and lose? Just askin’. 🙂

·10 months agoYes and with certain things sometimes they are WRONG. Some of the members will sit here one minute and bash other members who deal with a lot of returns and brag about how they rarely if ever get them. (Good for them) and because they never get them their knowledge in them might be misguided or wrong altogether.
I personally have a lot of experience with returns and disputes. Not because I am a bad seller but because I sell items with a high return rate. I've also argued over things such as having the ability to keep initial shipping charge on INADs that some people have argued with me over. I already helped the OP and told them to deny the return. If OP followed ebay protocol they will have his back and even if the credit card company finds in the buyers favor ebay will cover them.
How would these sellers even know if they never get returns/disputes and if and when they do, never fight them? I have fought every single dispute I've ever gotten. I think I maybe have ever lost one and even then ebay waived the $20 fee. If OPs buyer already left positive feedback AND filed the return as a remorse reason ebay policy is going to favor them on a credit card chargeback regardless of how the credit card rules.
One of these mentors months ago gave a buyer advice to file a return improperly (INAD instead of remorse when it was a remorse reason) to avoid having to pay return shipping. I'd hold what some of them say with a grain of salt like anyone else.
The reason why most of the members on this forum are very pro ebay (as is their advice highly buyer leaning) is because some of them run anyone else off that have differing view points, experiences and opinions.
To the OP. Deny the return.

·10 months agoYes but to jump in from my experience as well it is ebay who issues that refund and the seller's funds are "protected." At least that is what I believe the case to be, thou you may be right, I don't know for sure, I personally think ebay protects the seller in this case.

·10 months agoThe fact that they chose “Doesn’t Fit†is a good thing for you. It’s a remorse return, so they have to pay for the return shipping. I’d accept the return and get it back, because if you deny it and they go to their bank for a chargeback there’s no guarantee you’ll get the chance to get the item back.

·10 months agoThe buyer gets 30 days and that's it. Yes you have the right to decline the return cause they filed the case after the 30 days was up.
Also just so you know your comment of "(to me, those always reek of "I tried to re-sell your item for a profit and it didn't work out for me, so now, you should take it back).."
I highly doubt that. There really isn't a way to prove that nor does it really matter.

The buyer cannot leave negative feedback if they already left the OP positive.Perhaps you skimmed over that part.

Yes I skimmed over the part about the leaving positive already. Yes if positive feedback has been left then no they can't leave a negative.
