Seller generated return labels. Is insurance included or available?
I have a return where I need to generate an eBay return label for the buyer. So the buyer ships using this label. It gets lost or damaged after the buyer ships. I'm guessing the seller takes the hit. How can eBay generate the return label and not include insurance? The item is $450. Or how does this work? Thanks for your replies.

·2 years agoeBay return labels do not include insurance @oldwestcoins so if you anticipate wanting an insured label then go to your account settings and enable RMAs. By enabling return authorization numbers, eBay will not auto-generate a return label. They will give you the choice of using an eBay label or providing your own label purchased externally.

This applies to future returns, not returns that have already been filed.

OP2 years agoI actually have had two eBay reps, including a high-level supervisor, that have told me items are covered. I have the transcripts. Interesting.

·2 years agoI am 100% positive @oldwestcoins , eBay return labels are not insured. I don't know what those reps you spoke with meant by "items are covered" but if it helps I'll tag @kyle@ebay and I'm sure he'll confirm the info I posted in this discussion is accurate.

Hey @wastingtime101, that is correct. The help page that talks about this is somewhat long, so I grabbed a snippet from that page and pasted it below:
@oldwestcoins thanks for bringing this to our attention. We'll be sure to provide the proper coaching to the agents you spoke with about this previously. If you would like to have insurance included on a return shipment, essentially you would need to provide your own return label to the buyer, rather than using the eBay-generated return label. The help page I linked above goes into more detail if you're interested in going that route.

The risk you run with a return is that the item may not be packaged properly ... so insurance wouldn't cover it if it is damaged in transit.
As long as the buyer uses the shipping label provided by eBay or the seller ... they will be refunded by eBay regardless of whether it reaches the seller OR is damaged when it arrives.
