return an item that I started (opened) the return and then acccidentally closed the return.

I closed it because I didn't have a printer set up to print the return label when it was open, not realizing once the open return was CLOSED, I could not resume or OPEN a new return request. The Seller states they can't help. All Ebay's customer service & help is just automated and articles . NO ASSISTANCE or HELP. Robert Hale

Right, you only get 1 shot at a return.

Once you closed it, that's it, you can't do anything else through Ebay.

If you paid through Pay Pal, open a case with them, but you'll have to pay return shipping.

I believe the eBay system only gives you one opportunity for a return (at least, I've never heard of a customer being able to do it twice). When you closed the return, this indicates that you are keeping the item.

That said, you have a couple of options.

If the seller has grace, they may honor the return outside of the eBay system. But, it sounds as if your seller isn't interested in this ... understandably, because returns outside of the eBay system are financially dangerous for both sellers and buyers.
If the item is not as described (seller sent the wrong item, it was broken upon arrival, it is missing parts, the seller's listing misrepresented the item), then you can file a charge-back with your payment processor - debit or credit card.
