Reopening a closed return on an item
I ordered an item that was the wrong color and requested a return with the seller and she agreed. After initiating the return, she asked that I change the reason to a buyer related option. I agreed with her position and tried to edit the return, but couldn't seem to figure out how to do this. I made the decision to delete the return with hopes to open a second return. Bad decision on my part -- once the return is closed eBay doesn't give you any option to reopen or create a new return. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to navigate this?

·8 months agoSorry but once a case is closed, that is it. It can never be reopened. If you paid by credit card, contact your card company.

·8 months agoALL eBay buyers, as well as all eBay sellers, need to read eBay's Money Back Guarantee for buyers, preferably before beginning to buy or sell here. It offers very good protection for buyers. The catch is that buyers need to read it, understand it and use it in a timely fashion.
Per your message here, you received an item that was not as described (wrong color). All you needed to do was go to your Purchase History and find this transaction. Click on "want to return". Click on "not as described". This would open a case with your seller and eBay.
You then wait 3 days for a response from your seller. The seller is supposed to either send you a prepaid return label or tell you to keep the item and they will refund. Nothing happens? You return to the case and ask eBay to step in. You will be refunded from the seller's account.
No need to contact seller, no need for negotiations.
Earlier this month, I posted that I was going to keep track of messages here where the lack of knowledge of the MBG was the problem. Have to confess there were too many so abandoned that plan.
No, you can't reopen the case or create a new return case. Your option now is to do a chargeback on the credit card you used.
Please take a moment to read the MBG.

·8 months agoI just wanted to point out that the OP said that they agreed with the seller that it was a buyer-related option...
...and it kinda sounds like the OP might have an honest seller that the OP might still be able to work things out with...?
What did the seller say after this happened?

·8 months agoThank you for your input. And, since the OP's question was whether or not they could reopen the return case, or create a new return case, my reply was that they most likely could not do that.
Also, the fact that the seller asked the OP to basically change her reason for return so that the seller would not get dinged was a little sketchy in my humble opinion.

·8 months agoI do see your point about the ding avoidance.
I, actually, had a question...
your experience would probably answer it faster than looking it up.
If buyer were to send back the item...
...and the seller uses send refund option...
does the buyer get the tax back from eBay?
I think the only other thing is to deal with return shipping...
seller wouldn't be able to refund more than collected.
Does either side get a ding if that option is used?
Seems a little convoluted way of doing it maybe...
but do you think that would work?

·8 months agoTaxes are paid by the buyer to eBay who sends them to the buyer's state, so those are refunded by eBay during the return process in most cases, though it's possible there would be some scenarios where you'd instead need to file for a rebate with your state.

·8 months agoDon't know about the "sketchy" as the OP has not made it clear if the "wrong" color was sent, or if the buyer did not like the color, as in "wrong" for their use/need, but yes, if seller was just trying to avoid the ding then "sketchy" is applicable.

·8 months agoThank you for your POV. No, we don't know that the wrong color was sent, or if it's just that the buyer didn't like it; however, this whole thing is moot because the case has apparently been closed, and those cannot usually be reopened, so the OP's only current option is to do the chargeback with the credit card.

·8 months agoWell, if they're willing to trust the seller and the seller is willing to trust them, there is the option of simply returning it without an official case, and the seller is still capable of issuing a refund at that point. It would be done without any protection from eBay for either party, and the buyer would be taking almost all the risk in that case, though, so I only recommend it if there is legitimate trust established.

Wouldn't an honest seller admit sending the wrong color and not try to put the blame on the buyer?
