Please help me understand how a return can just happen without my knowledge or involvement.
I sold a JVC VCR that I cleaned and tested myself and am 100% sure it was in great working condition. This was delivered March 9th and a return was started on March 21st and it shows that the buyer shipped it back on the 21st as well. On that same day the 21st I am informed the buyer is returning item and that is is already in route. Now I am not confused about the return itself as if something has gone wrong let's make it right. What I would like help understanding is not being able to troubleshoot the order myself as the seller. What if there was an easy solution to fix the issue? Why are we as sellers not part of the return process since we know the item. This leaves a lot of room for the sellers to be taken advantage of I would think. Can somebody please help me understand why this is this way, what the logic behind it is and if I am missing something here.

·5 months agoI see nothing wrong with the way it worked, eBay is automated and so was the return based on your settings. I'm sure each case can have circumstances that may work best in a different way, but nothing wrong with the automated way, it's quick and simple...might not always be to your liking, but we know (or should know) going in how it all works

Swift and easy returns are designed for Kings and Queens, aka Buyers.
Individual case points like yours really don't matter in the big picture.

·5 months agoIf you hang around here for awhile, you'll see a lot of post complaining about sellers not responding to messages.
Then you have sellers that'll keep the buyer busy with try this and try that, until the MBG expires, then they never hear from them again.

·5 months agoThere is no eBay requirement that a buyer contact the seller if there's a problem with an item he purchased. And are you saying the buyer is just returning the item without opening an item not as described case?

OP5 months agoI understand it's not a requirement. If the buyer contacted be maybe I could have guided them on how the item is used properly or a simply give direction that allows the buyer to see what they are calling a defect may not be. Allowing the buyer to be happy with the item deciding to keep it. They win, I win, eBay Wins. Buyer is happy with item they wanted and ordered and don't need to hassle with a return. I get to use great customer service keeping a customer happy, and not getting a return, eBay keeps all the fees and knows the buyer and seller took care of things. If a seller is using this to try and refuse a return the system that automatically starts a return can be started at this point. I think that most of us want to keep buyer happy so when they reach out we can quickly determine if it needs a return, or you can help the customer making them happy with item or buyer is just wanting a return no matter what. It just seems like the incentive is to cancel the purchase on an item you wanted without letting support try to help first.

·5 months agoYOU offer 30day returns so you pre -agree to accept the return. The reason does not even mattter.

·5 months ago@jamezmagic , the couple of your sold listings I looked at showed that you accept returns. If it was a Item Not Described type of return case, those are auto approved and a eBay return label is made available to the buyer. Actually any return reason used is approved.
If you want to interject yourself into the return process, you need to go to your Return Settings and choose the RMA option. The buyers return will still be approved, BUT no return label is available to the buyer until you approve which eBay return carrier, USPS or Fedex, OR provide your own return label you buy elsewhere.
The RMA option stalls the return until you take action. I think it gives you 3 days to provide a return label. You can then go message back and forth with the buyer before they can return the item.

OP5 months agoThanks, I want to be clear, I too want the buyer to be whole and taken care of. It's not even a question. I'm just wondering why the buyer does not tell me as maybe there is a solution that I can give or maybe they don't understand something and think it's a defect when it isn't. We could fix the issue quickly and everyone is happy. By contacting eBay and not the seller, especially on an item I completely refurb. and tested it just feels weird. Again I don't care about the refund, it's part of doing business, I accept that and have for the 35 years I ran a brick and mortar. It is the logic behind not allowing for a possible quick resolution everyone is happy with prior to the quick return without notice. I learn a lot from this community please if you respond explain the logic as that is what I am curious about not why returns need to be easy as that is a given and I understand that.

·5 months agothe "logic" (eBay logic) is that the return gets done quickly with eBay thinking that is the best thing to do.
(too note.......... I don't like it to happen)

·5 months agoThe short answer is that ebay is not a garage sale anymore, and hasn't been for 20+ years. Sellers are responsible for making customers whole, even if you have done nothing wrong. It is the cost of doing business in a large marketplace with credit card transactions.
