No partial refund option provided for return

Summary: coolindian420 experienced an issue on eBay where a 100% refund was issued to a buyer despite intending to only provide a 50% refund. They expressed frustration with eBay's customer service for providing inconsistent information regarding partial refunds. kensgiftshop and christworks advised that partial refunds are not supported in cases of return requests filed by buyers, suggesting any repayment would need to be done outside eBay. Other participants, including bonanza125 and beautifuljewelrynyc, discussed scenarios where partial refunds might still be possible, suggesting changes to selling terms or alternative refund reasons. The discussion highlighted both technical limitations and procedural misunderstandings in eBay's refund process.

Had a return request. Buyer agreed to keep item for 50% price. When I went to refund it gave me no option for partial refund and refunded 100% and buyer was told to keep item. Has ebay taken away partial refund option? Is there any way for buyer to return 50% or any way out? Thanks. PS: Ebay agents no help at all and every agent has a different answer for same topic.

I just recently listed some items on ebay, I stopped over a year ago and am now looking at alternative ways to sell. I got a Not as Describe, request return. I was shocked that ebay changed their policies to only 2 options. Ebay use to advise "try and work it out" I thought I had it worked out but there are no options for sellers to work it out. Don't understand what genius made these changes. Now more scammers can screw sellers with the not as described...

I've been back almost 4 years. Nothing has changed, so if you were selling 2 or 3 years ago, the same rules are still in effect. If you offer free returns and are not below standard you can reduce the refund if certain circumstances apply.

This Return just closed for me a couple weeks ago and I was given the Option. It was in fact a Remorse Return though and I was able to go back into the Return at anytime and provide either a Full or Partial Refund. The option was available to me after I confirmed the Shipping Label being sent (I work off a Return Merchandise Authorization). It was also a Free Return.

If there is a return case exists, and you want to refund partially under the case, need to choose the reasons like "Item was used, damaged, missing parts", then the system allows the deduction. You may just ask the buyer to close the case, then go to the paid and shipped order to issue partial refund.

Can you not go to the sold item, use the drop down menu, click on "send refund" and then state the partial refund to send? Just like a partial refund on combined shipping

Here is what I think may have happened. You have a 30 day return with seller pays for shipping. The buyer requested a return. So the buyer must return the item to you in which you must issue a full refund upon return. There is no partial refund option to close a case with a return request and with your return terms. Yes you can partially refund when there is no return requested however that option is now gone.

Thank You. Just wondering why ebay does not allow negotiations between seller and buyer if buyer agrees to keep item at reduced price? or is there a setting I can make in my selling terms?

It's set in your terms. Now if the buyer hadn't filed a return case and negotiated with you that would be allowed unfortunately the buyer filed a case so your terms automatically appeal. I dealt with situations like this before but its very rare. Majority of the time the buyer either lands up closing the case or doesn't return the item so the case closes in my favor.

There is only a refund option on manage orders but I can always enter the amount of the refund, I use it frequently to refund excess shipping.

Yes I agree but this time I did not see a field to enter the refund amount, it was pre filled to 100% with no option to change. Will have to be more diligent next time and take screenshots.

@coolindian420 I wish you had taken a screen shot of the screen to post here. I'm not sure why you hit refund if there was no option to reduce. eBay doesn't just refund 100%. You have to agree to it.

The buyer is under no obligation to send you any money back. If they want to, they would need to do it off the platform. I would let it go and accept the lesson learned here.

Understood. Will be more diligent next time. It is just that on my last partial refund situation there was a clear section that asked how much I wanted to refund before the submit button, and this time I did not see it and I thought it would show up in the next screen.

@coolindian420 I believe you. I was thinking about your situation. Maybe six weeks ago now I had to issue a refund on a remorse return. The option to withhold the shipping was completely gone. If I wanted to return the shipping (which I wouldn't have), I had no way to do that. I'll link to that post here in case you or anyone following this discussion wants to check it out.

Definitely grag screen shots whenever there is anything wonky going on. Sometimes our eyes do miss things. Sometimes there is an actual glitch.

They would have to repay outside of Ebay.

Right, CS wouldn't be any help because there's nothing they can do.

Thank You. Regarding CS they could at least tell me the partial refund options and procedures. One said there is no partial refund allowed on ebay and other said I should have called earlier as ebay does allow partial refunds.
