Local Pickup Buyer Demands Refund Then Ghosts – eBay Protection Advice Needed
Summary: solditems sold a John Deere lawnmower locally, which the buyer collected in working condition. The buyer later claimed the mower didn't start and was leaking oil, demanding a full refund. solditems expressed concerns about potential misuse or a false claim, particularly since the buyer has become unresponsive after initial communications. kensgiftshop and stainlessenginecovers advised solditems on handling eBay's return process, highlighting the challenges faced when dealing with eBay's policies on local pickup items. solditems is considering contacting eBay to address the situation and explore options for resolution.
“I sold a 48-inch walk-behind John Deere lawnmower (with Kawasaki engine) as a local pickup only sale. The buyer came and collected it in running condition. They are apparently novices with commercial walk-behind mowers and are now claiming it ‘didn’t start’ and that oil is leaking. This is confusing because if it truly wouldn’t start, oil wouldn’t be leaking from normal operation. I suspect either misuse, damage from improper strapping/securing on their trailer (the dipstick/fill tube on the side of the engine is vulnerable), or a false claim. They now want a full refund including several valuable accessories they’ve had for over a week.”
“Since it’s a local sale I didn’t ship it or pay for transport. I’ve agreed to accept the return, but the buyer has gone completely silent with no contact about arranging drop-off or return shipping despite the long drive involved. eBay’s automatic buyer protection guarantee is pushing for a refund on their end. What are the best next steps to get eBay to step in and protect the seller here? How should I contact support to open a case and request intervention? Other local-pickup sellers — what options or recourse do I have when the buyer disappears after demanding a refund? Any advice on holding eBay accountable in this situation would be appreciated.”

·Jul 11, 2026 at 12:07 AMthat is NOT a reason that would be shown to a buyer when they open an official return.
Looks like this- one reason, YOU provide a shipping label.
The 'other' reasons-BUYER provides way to get it back to you.

OPJul 10, 2026 at 9:21 PMI accepted the return immediately after they requested and communicated via eBay text and cell phone text and have received no reply. Reading the various discussion boards. I’m concerned that eBay will grant the refund based on the refund guarantee policy and I will obviously lose the sale and the buyer will not have to return the item because they live so far away. Does this happen often and does eBay always side with the buyer because it is a false claim that the machine was leaking oil.

·Jul 10, 2026 at 9:52 PMIf you provided a return shipping label, the buyer will have to return something to get a refund.
Getting Ebay involved in a return is not a good idea for the seller.
Ebay doesn't really care what the reason was for the return, they just care that the buyer filed for a return, doesn't matter if it's legit or not.

OPJul 10, 2026 at 11:23 PMI can’t really send a return label because the item is so large and it was a local pick up only. How would I send a return shipping label back for these large items? Doesn’t eBay want to be aware of buyers bad behavior? In your experience if the buyer tested the lawnmower when they took it and I was able to scan the QR code they picked it up. Are they not obliged to follow through with the sale and that a false claim is easily recognized by eBay as potentially a buyer, trying to perpetrate a scam and take advantage of the lucrative return policy eBay has for buyers ?

·Jul 10, 2026 at 11:43 PM · EditedIf the buyer opened a return for 'not as described' then you provide a label (ebay will show you and you can choose).
Otherwise, you show 30 day returns with buyer paying for return; so you would NOT need to provide a label.
What reason does the return show?

OPJul 10, 2026 at 11:58 PMJust the buyer came all the way from Atlanta, Georgia to Connecticut to purchase my 48 inch. John Deere walk behind commercial lawnmower. They tested it and it started it ran. Everything was fine but then barely 24 hours later after they returned back to Atlanta Georgia. They reported that there was an oil leak, which is very suspicious. I have agreed to the return, but since it was a local pick up. Then there isn’t really any return label I can offer the buyer as such. I want to engage eBay to have them help me reach out to the buyer as to how to handle the return. However, when they arrived for the pick up, they had suspicious behavior, but I thought I was protected by eBay in this type of transaction. Now I do not believe that this buyer who lives in Atlanta Georgia will return the item. It was suspicious that they drove 1100 miles to pick up the item. As I said, I’ve agreed to the return. I even want to talk to eBay and suggest that I can find a hot shot delivery service that can pick up the item in Atlanta Georgia, and take the item from the buyer and bring it back to Connecticut, however, the buyer has not replied to any of my eBay texts or cell phone texts. That’s why it feels like a scam so I’m hoping in this case that eBay will help a seller in such a scenario.

·Jul 11, 2026 at 12:01 AMAgain, what REALLY REALLY matters is
1.) did they open an official return on ebay (that you got notified by ebay per ebay messages)
2.) what REASON did they use in the Case (if opened).
Without that info, very hard to direct you.
By the way, nobody is home at ebay. Ebay is nothing but a 'system', like a modern day NY Times ad you place for 'things for sale'.
