eBay item not returned but buyer purchased again

I sold an item to a gentleman in March, I was told he needed to return because it didnâ€™t work as expected. I said â€œthats fineâ€ I started the process, sent a shipping label. A couple of weeks later the buyer says they got it working. And decided to keep it. They said they would cancel the return. They never did and the case was closed by EBay a few weeks later.
this past weekend, I sell the item to the same buyer again. How did this happen? Did EBay automatically relist it for me even though it was never returned?

Is it the Sony DVD recorder with missing remote?

It shows that item was listed twice with different descriptions, photos and prices so it wouldn't have been a relist with eBay or info/photos would have stayed the same..
