Buyer wants to return an item for an issue that was clearly described in the listing
I sold an inexpensive interior part for an old Honda vehicle consisting of the the overhead panel with two map lights. I indicated both in "condition description" and the listing that one of the light buttons was broken/did not work, but that the broken button could easily be replaced with another one from a comparable part. This was all clearly described. Return policy on this item is : returns not accepted.
Buyer paid shipping and received the product, then promptly filed for a return. Here's the conversation between us:
Me: Can you provide specifics on what is not working?
Buyer: The right switch is not working. I try to switch on but light not on.
As the item description stated, you can remove the button from another unit and replace the button that doesn t work. Have you tried that?
This is not an expensive item, and I really don't care about giving a refund, but I feel like in principal I should not have to due to a buyer not reading the description and condition. I also don't want to be out the shipping charge to send it back to me.
What am i obligated to do here? What would you do?

OP10 months agoyes, true. But i'm curious: What does "returns not accepted" *actually* mean?

·10 months agoIt means they can't return for change of mind reasons, or buyer remorse, providing its an honest buyer. But sadly the loophole of having an option to file item doesn't match photos or description exists, and that can circumvent any return options.
In the future, list an item that has a defect like this, as Parts Only. That limits returns to 3 days. Any used item that has a defect like this should be using that option anyway.

·10 months ago"Returns not accepted" on eBay means the seller doesn't accept returns for "buyer's remorse" reasons, such as changing your mind or finding a better price. However, it does not override the eBay Money Back Guarantee, so you can still return an item if it is faulty, broken, or not as described in the listing.

·10 months agoWell 2 things:
( A) BUYER'S DONT READ! or only read what they want to read which is not much these days
(B) always list condition as FOR PARTS OR REPAIRS under not working if that option is available in automotive besides USED (personally I don't list stuff in the Automotive category, so I am not sure what they offer)
Suggestion = Ebay is going to make you take it back so BITE the bullet and just resell it for a bit more to recoup the ship cost back or offer the buyer some money off and move on..

OP10 months agothanks everyone, helpful replies. My fault for listing it as "used" instead of "for parts or repair".

·10 months agoIf you listed it as a used part then it needs to be `100% working order.
That is per ebay policy..... so it does agree with principles.
